    Notes: Using the method of Doppler-free double resonance polarization spectroscopy transitions from selectively pumped levels (v', J') of the D1Σ+u state down to levels (v‘, J‘) of the X 1Σ+g state with v‘= 0–140 have been measured with high accuracy. A long range analysis, based on 21 outer turning points of the IPA potential with v‘=110-130 and on calculated exchange energies and second order van der Waals coefficients Cn with n=6, 8, 10, and 12 leads to a dissociation energy De =3649.5±0.8 cm−1 (0.452 49 eV). The influence of the third order C11 contribution and the hyperfine structure on the correct value of De are briefly discussed.

    Notes: Intense stimulated emission in the 119 to 149 nm region is observed from HD excited by two quanta at 193 nm. For certain transitions, the conversion efficiency approaches 1% so that peak powers of ∼10 MW are produced. Electron collisions with the HD (E,F) level are found to efficiently transfer population to the HD(C) state which produces stimulated emission on several C → X Werner band lines in the vicinity of 120 nm. The data on the pressure dependence of the stimulated signals strongly support the conclusion that, in comparison to H2, HD exhibits a large isotopic dependence on the cross section for rotationally inelastic electron collisions in electronically excited states. The rate constant for this rotationally inelastic process is estimated as ∼2×10−7 cm3/s. This is the first observation of an isotopically sensitive electron collisional process involving an electronically excited level.

    Notes: Abstract In a previous study it was demonstrated that a lectin controls cell-cell interaction in the gorgonian Eunicella cavolinii (Koch) as a negative modulator. Now we describe the procedure to purify this lectin to homogeneity; its molecular weight is 23 400. The homologous proteoglycans were identified as positive modulators of cell-cell (and/or cell substrate) interaction. The purified single proteoglycan aggregates were 1200±700 nm long and the distance between the attachment points of the proteoglycan subunits was about 45 nm. The glycosaminoglycan residues of the gorgonian proteoglycans were identified as hyaluronic acid (35.5%), heparan sulfate (47.9%) and dermatan sulfate (14.1%). Binding studies with immobilized homologous proteoglycan preparations revealed that gorgonian cells attach to this substratum presumably via its glycosaminoglycans. Quantitative determinations of these two modulators of cell-cell recognition in the three regions of individual colonies revealed concentration gradients these concentration differences reflect a lower cell motility in the polyp-bearing branches and a higher motility of the cells in the polyp-free stem and in the basis, is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Chronic treatment (2 weeks) with piracetam (500 mg/kg, once daily PO) elevatedm-cholinoceptor density in the frontal cortex of aged (18 months) female mice by about 30–40%, but had no effect onm-cholinoceptor density in the frontal cortex of young (4 weeks) mice. The effect of piracetam onm-cholinoceptor density as determined by the specific binding of tritiated QNB was not affected by concomitant daily treatment with either choline (200 mg/kg) or scopolamine (4 mg/kg). It is concluded that the effect of piracetam onm-cholinoceptor density could explain the positive effects which have been reported for combinations of cholinergic precursor treatment with piracetam on memory and other cognitive functions in aged experimental animals and patients and could also represent part of the possible mechanism of action of piracetam alone.

    Notes: Summary Two-cell mouse embryos were X-irradiated (1 Gy) and immediately thereafter exposed to mercuric chloride (3 µM) up to the blastocyst stage. When combined treatment started shortly (about 1 to 2 h) before mitosis to the four-cell stage, blastocyst formation, hatching of blastocysts, trophoblast outgrowth and ICM formation were impaired stronger than expected from the addition of the single effects. The enhancement of risk was maximal for hatching of blastocysts and no further increase was observed for trophoblast outgrowth and ICM formation. When exposure of embryos to X-rays and mercury began about 5 to 6 h before mitosis to the four-cell stage, only additive effects were obtained for the endpoints mentioned above.

    Notes: Summary There are situations in which the exposure to more than one agent results in an enhanced risk for the exposed organism, that is in which the observed effect exceeds the effect expected from the addition of the individual effects. Our knowledge of such hazards is rather limited, in particular for those agents that occur in the environment of man. When early mouse embryos in vitro were exposed to ionizing radiation and mercuric chloride, the observed risk was higher than expected from the individual effects. This increase in risk was due to an interaction between mechanisms induced by ionizing radiation and mercury. To gain some more insight into the mode of interaction, the time requirements of mercury exposure were studied. The amount of interaction did not depend on mercury exposure before or during irradiation. However, to achieve an enhanced risk, exposure had to start as soon as possible after irradiation and had to last as long as possible. This time dependence suggests that if inhibition of DNA-repair is involved in the mechanism of interaction at all, then there must be an additional late process that is also impaired by mercury.
