Notes: Summary A total of 824 patients with chronic pancreatitis were differentiated with regard to calcifying (CP;n = 308) and noncalcifying (NCP;n = 508) forms. The ratio between males and females was 5.8:1 (CP) and 3.2:1 (NCP). The calcification was diffuse in two-thirds and localized (head, tail) in one-third. Alcoholism is the cause of 68.5% of CP, but in only 44.6% of NCP. A longer history and an incidence of diabetes twice that of NCP is evident in CP. The follow-up was 79.6% (median review 5.6 years). Early postoperative complications in CP occur in 60%, but in NCP they occur only in 44%; the late complications are identical.

Notes: Abstract Triple differential cross sections have been measured for electron impact ionization of helium at 256 eV collision energy, 3 eV energy of the slow outgoing electrons and scattering angles of the fast outgoing electrons of 4°, 6°, 8°, and 10°. The data have been put on absolute scale by extrapolating the generalized oscillator strength to zero momentum transfer. In this optical limit the triple differential cross sections can be normalized by using the well-known cross sections for photoionization. The experimental data are compared with results of different theoretical approaches. For nearly all calculated curves rather good agreement with the measurements is obtained for the relative shape of the binary peak, while often its absolute cross section is overestimated. Concerning the recoil peak, larger discrepancies are found with respect to both, relative shapes and cross sections. A perceptible improvement can be stated for calculations which have been performed in a distorted wave approximation and in second Born approximation.

Notes: Abstract Malfunction of the liver involves disturbances of urea synthesis and ammonia detoxification. These phenomena became apparent, especially during ammonia loading of patients. The functional state of the liver can be assessed by oral administration of 15NH4Cl and subsequent analysis of 15N-urea and 15N-ammonia in urine by emission spectrometry. Clinical tests based on the ratio of the excess abundances (see Appendix) of 15N-ammonia to 15N-urea excreted in urine 3 h after oral administration gave values for patients with liver disease which differed significantly from those for healthy subjects. Absorption disturbances, which often accompany liver diseases, do not influence the effectiveness of the method.

Notes: Summary The influence was examined of ultra-long-distance running (1000 km race lasting 20 days) on changes in serum lipids. The 110 participants received two types of diet, a conventional Western diet and a wholesome vegetarian diet. Of the 55 finishers the serum concentration of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and triglycerides decreased significantly during the first 8 days of the run, but rose again towards the end of the race without reaching pre-race levels. The high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol increased initially but decreased in the final days of the run. The values for apolipoprotein A-I were not correlated with HDL-cholesterol. The free fatty acids and free glycerol showed marked increases (five times the prerace concentration), falling towards the end of the run. Changes in serum lipids showed no correlation with changes in body mass. Similar changes were observed in both dietary groups.

Notes: Abstract The experimental and theoretical situations for direct single ionization by electron impact are reviewed with special emphasis on triple differential cross sections for impact energies between several hundred eV and threshold. These cross sections can now be determined in absolute units, thus providing a powerful test of calculations. Only the target atoms helium and atomic hydrogen are considered, with quite simple wave functions, in order to focus attention on the correct description of the collision mechanism and to investigate the ranges of validity of various theoretical models. For the higher incident energies, processes with asymmetric energy partitioning and small momentum transfer are emphasized. For a long time these processes (which represent the predominant majority of all ionizing collisions) could not be calculated satisfactorily. Substantial progress in the theoretical treatment of the problem now allows the reproduction of the correct intensities and peak positions in the angular correlations of the outgoing electrons. It is now clear that double collisions, at least, have to be taken into account to describe the dynamics of these collisions. At lower energies both escaping electrons move rather slowly in the field of the ion core and exchange effects can no longer be neglected. Therefore, the theoretical situation is still rather involved. Close to threshold, recent triple differential cross section measurements permit a partial wave analysis, which should challenge theorists to explain these data by ab-initio calculations. The last chapter of this report deals with the progress in the determination of reliable absolute double differential cross sections.
