Notes: Abstract A novel aminotransferase catalysing the first step of lysine catabolism, the oxidative transamination of the ?-group of L-lysine, was found and characterised in the yeast Pichia guilliermondii. The enzyme, L-lysine : pyruvate aminotransferase (Lys-AT), is strongly derepressed in cells grown on L-lysine as sole nitrogen source and its activity is highly specific for both L-lysine and pyruvate. We could successfully isolate a regulatory mutant which is unable to use lysine as sole nitrogen source based on its inability to derepress the Lys-AT.

Notes: Abstract Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility show that single phase EuBa2Cu3O x becomes superconducting at 94 K. Magnetization and magnetoresistivity yield a lower critical field of Hc1≃500 G and a variation ofT c with magnetic field of dT c /dH≃1 K/T. The high temperature resistivity shows that at about 700 K due to oxygen loss the sample is driven into a semiconducting state, in which the superconductivity is destroyed. The normal state magnetic susceptibility measured in the superconducting and in the oxygen degased, semiconducting sample indicates that the sample is paramagnetic in the normal state. This paramagnetism is larger than the one expected for trivalent Eu and therefore has to be attributed in part to a magnetic moment on Cu. Eu is found to be stable trivalent between 300 and 4.2 K through Mößbauer-spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract Tunneling and point-contact measurements have been performed on different high-T c superconductors M−Ba2Cu3O7 with M=Y, La, Eu. The average energy gaps deduced from the tunneling spectra are about 2Δ=33 meV for the Y- and La-type samples and about 2Δ=38 meV for the Eu-type samples, which give ratios 2Δ/k B T c in the range from 4 to 6. The point-contact characteristics show a distinct minimum in the differential resistance about zero bias and additional sharp spikes up to 40 mV. From these pointcontacts we can give an estimate of the critical current, yielding values in the range from 0.2 to 3 mA.

Notes: Summary Seventeen measuring parameters were used to characterize 197 mandibles (109 males, 88 females) taken from the corpses of people 20–80 years of age from the Rhine-Main-Neckar area. The representative measuring parameters and discriminating functions of intact lower jaws and lower jaw fragments of most frequent fracture types were determined in this practice group by means of discriminating analysis. In the present research material it was possible to determine sex accurately from an intact lower jaw bone in 82.6% (m) and 79.5% (f) of the cases. Furthermore, our results show clearly that sex may even be determined from lower jaw fragments. The classification was correct, depending on the type of fragment, in 72.5%–81.7% (m) and 71.6%–79.5% (f) of the cases.

Notes: Summary Twenty-one patients with acute and chronic leukemia or severe aplastic anemia were studied for NK activity against a thymoma cell line (Thy 121) before and after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. The means of the pretransplant and post-transplant levels did not differ from the mean of 134 NK determinations in 67 healthy donors. There was no correlation between pretransplant NK levels and the appearance of graft-versus-host disease. Three weeks following bone marrow transplantation, pretransplant NK levels were observed. The sensitivity of NK cells to interferon was the same as in normal donors both before and after bone marrow transplantation. In contrast to methotrexate, cyclosporin A inhibited NK activity in patients and controls in vitro. In vivo cyclosporin A treatment, however, did not decrease NK levels in bone marrow recipients.

Notes: Summary Osteocalcin serum levels reflect bone turnover. In renal insufficiency secondary hyperparathyroidism and reduced renal clearance might be responsible for elevated serum levels of osteocalcin. Renal transplantation might improve renal osteodystrophy and therefore could influence osteocalcin serum levels. We determined the influence of renal transplantation on osteocalcin levels in 37 consecutive patients (25m/12f) by RIA. Blood samples were collected prior to, 3 days, 28 days, 6 months and 12 months after renal transplantation. Prior to renal transplantation osteocalcin levels were significantly elevated (x±s: 23.4±12.8 ng/ml) compared to healthy volunteers (4.1±1.4 ng/ml). Following renal transplantation osteocalcin decreased significantly (9.4±8.9 ng/ml) 3 days and (7.1±7.8 ng/ml) 28 days. However, 6 and 12 months following renal transplantation the mean osteocalcin level increased again (8.3±5.7 ng/ml, 12.1±15.4 ng/ml). At 6 months 11 and at 12 months only 6 of 37 patients had osteocalcin levels in the normal range. 12 months following renal transplantation 21 out of 37 patients with elevated osteocalcin levels had parathyroid hormone levels above the normal range. Additionally to increased osteocalcin levels patients prior to renal transplantation had elevated alkaline phosphatase. Alkaline phosphatase had following renal transplantation a similar pattern as osteocalcin with initial decrease and secondary increase 6 and 12 months after renal transplantation. Parathyroid hormone was elevated in all patients before renal transplantation. Following renal transplantation mean parathyroid hormone levels fell significantly, however remained above normal range in 57% of these 37 patients. Osteocalcin serum levels correlated positively with alkaline phosphatase (rs=0.43−0.62;p〈0.011) and parathyroid hormone (0.3−0.66p〈0.07). This correlation of osteocalcin with alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone prior to and after renal transplantation suggests that osteocalcin may be a confirmative parameter in renal osteodystrophy in patients on chronic intermittent hemodialysis and following renal transplantation.

Notes: Abstract The disease course and therapy of a nine-and-a-half-year-old boy with hyperphenylalaninemia due to a dihydropteridine reductase deficiency are reported. Clinically, there is a marked mental retardation and complex basal ganglion symptoms. The cranial computed tomographic investigation shows bilateral, symmetrical, comma-shaped calcifications in the globus pallidus and the putamen of the lentiform nucleus. The cause of these basal ganglion calcifications remains unclear. Lowering of serum and CSF folic acid levels could not be detected, in contrast to cases with the same enzyme defect described previously.
