    Description / Table of Contents: Contents Calculating transients in power systems it is advantageous to use symmetrical components. The example of the most common three-phase bridge converter shows that also current converters can be described in space phasors. With respect to the characteristics of conducting valves the networks and the conditions of firing and commutation ending are deduced. Numerically calculated results agree with measurements. A parameter study shows the typical space phasor curves of bridge converter currents.

Das Beispiel der meistgebräuchlichen Drehstrom-Brückenschaltung zeigt, daß auch Stromrichter mit Raumzeigern beschrieben werden können. Unter Berücksichtigung der Eigenschaften stromführender Ventile werden die Ersatzschaltpläne sowie die Zünd- und Löschbedingungen in Modalkomponenten hergeleitet. Die Ergebnisse numerischer Berechnungen stimmen mit Messungen überein. Eine Parameterstudie zeigt die für Brückenschaltungen typischen Stromortskurven in Modalkomponenten.

    Notes: Summary Ifosfamide/mesna was given to 97 patients who had malignant solid tumors diagnosed before they were 21 years of age. Patients received 1.6 g/m2 ifosfamide dailyx5, given i.v. over 15 min, followed by 400 mg/m2 i.v. mesna at 15 min and 4 and 6 h after ifosfamide. Responses were noted in patients with osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and other soft-tissue sarcomas, rhabdoid tumor, neuroblastoma, Wilm's tumor, primitive neuroectodermal tumor, retinoblastoma, germ-cell tumors, and B-cell lymphoma. Toxicity included mild to moderate nausea and vomiting, transient, reversible myelosuppression, transient elevations of serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine and liver enzymes, infections, and self-limiting neurotoxicity characterized by changes in mental status, motor dysfunction, cranial nerve palsy, cerebellar dysfunction, and seizures. Neurotoxic symptoms were generally seen in patients who had previously received cisplatin. Ifosfamide is an important alkylating agent that should be combined with other agents in phase II and III trials. Alternate dose schedules should also be investigated.

    Notes: Summary Crops grown with flood irrigation on slowly draining clay soils are subject to periods of waterlogging during and after each irrigation. The aim of this experiment was to quantify crop responses to these short-term waterlogging events and to assess the modifying effect of different agronomic practices. Maize was grown in undisturbed (U) and repacked (R) profiles of clay loam soil encased in steel cylinders (0.75 m diameter × 1.4 m deep). Two levels of N (high (HN) 300 kg N ha−1, and low (LN) 150 kg N ha−1) were applied as a split dressing. Three periods of flooding (F) of 72, 72 and 48 h were imposed on half the treatments beginning on days 40, 54 and 68 respectively after sowing. The other irrigation regime (C) kept the profile well watered but avoided surface inundation.

    Notes: Summary There is an increasing demand from farmers for irrigation scheduling advice. Where rainfall and evapotranspiration vary little from year to year, advice on a fixed irrigation schedule based on mean climatic data can be given. However where significant year to year variability in weather occurs a more flexible approach using actual weather data to predict the current level of soil water and mean climatic data to forecast the future rate of depletion and hence irrigation date may be needed. A technique for deciding the most appropriate scheduling approach was tested by using a simple model of crop growth combined with a soil water balance model to simulate year to year variability in scheduling advice. This technique was applied to irrigated wheat using a set of climatic data from 1968 to 1978 for Griffith in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of New South Wales, Australia. A typical sowing date in early June was used and simulated irrigations were scheduled at an allowable soil water depletion (ASWD) of 62 mm for maximum yield and 93 mm for 80% of maximum. The analysis predicted that weather variability between years would cause the number of irrigations to vary from 2 to 7 for ASWD=62 mm and 1 to 4 for ASWD=93 mm. The interval between irrigations varied from 12 to 30 days, for ASWD=62 mm and from 16 to 28 days, for ASWD=93 mm. The first irrigation occurred between 76 and 131 days from sowing for ASWD=62 mm and from 100 to 140 days from sowing for ASWD=93 mm. The date of the last irrigation was similarly variable. This high degree of variability in the times and frequency of irrigations indicated that in south-eastern Australia accurate irrigation scheduling advice can only be given by using a flexible model using both actual and mean climatic data. A fixed schedule based on mean climatic data would lead to an inefficient use of water caused by the mistiming of irrigations.

    Notes: Abstract This study describes some aspects of the distribution, ecology, and rock boring behaviour of the shrimp Alpheus saxidomus Holthuis from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This species has a typical hammer-shaped dactylus on the first right pereiopod of females and males that shows tracks of abrasion at the hammer-head. Structural analysis of this hammer-dactylus proved that it is suited for the mechanical treatment of rocks. The very thick and calcified cuticle of the hammer is mostly formed by the sclerotinized, hard exocuticle, which has abundant pore canals.

    Notes: Summary In the planum nasolabial glands of the goat, glycoconjugates of glandular and duct cells have been studied by means of a series of electron microscopic cytochemical methods. In the glandular cells glycoconjugates with vicinal diol groupings were present in secretory granules, certain elements of the Golgi complex, lysosome-like dense bodies, the surface coat of the plasma membrane, the majority of intracellular cytomembranes, glycogen particles and the basal lamina. In duct cells, glycoconjugates with the same properties were localized in similar ultrastructures, except for secretory granules, which were not detected in these cells. By lectin cytochemistry, glycoconjugates in glandular cell secretory granules contained a variety of saccharide residues such as α-d-mannose, α-d-glucose,N-acetyl-d-glucosamine and α-l-fucose. The cytochemical properties of the secretory glycoconjugates are discussed in relation to the physiological functions performed by the planum nasolabial glands in the goat.

    Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of intermittent waterlogging on the nutrient status of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum cv. Deltapine 61). The crop was grown in a sloping plot of soil in which a gradient of water-table depth ranging from 0.04m above to 0.60m below the soil surface was established during two periods of waterlogging in mid summer and early autumn. The first waterlogging lasted 8 days; the second lasted 16 days. Dry matter increases were less for severely waterlogged plants than for plants with well-aerated root systems during the first flooding, but the increases were similar during the second. Waterlogging impaired uptake of most nutrients by young plants in the first flooding, but had much less effect on nutrient uptake by older plants in the second. Waterlogging consistently reduced concentrations of P and K in the petioles and laminae of young fully-expanded leaves, and severely waterlogged plants were deficient in these nutrients by the end of the first flooding. Mn did not accumulate to toxic levels in waterlogged plants. During each flooding, waterlogged plants gained in total content of all nutrients studied, but the gains of each nutrient, except for Na, were proportionally smaller than for well-aerated plants. Fluxes of K-, Cl- and HPO4- ions in xylem sap exuded from stumps of detopped plants which had been waterlogged were lower than those from plants with well-aerated root systems. Seed cotton yields and concentrations of nutrients in mature bolls were not affected by the two periods of waterlogging. It is concluded that although intermittent waterlogging induced nutrient stress in cotton plants, especially for P and K in young plants before flowering, they recovered with no detrimental effect upon yield.

    Notes: Abstract Surface-irrigated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown on slowly draining clay soil is subjected to short-term periods of waterlogging at each irrigation which generally results in reduced productivity. The sequence of above- and below-ground plant responses to transient waterlogging and the role of N availability in modifying the immediate responses were studied. Lysimeters of Marah clay loam (a Natrustalf) were instrumented to monitor soil and plant responses to a 7-day waterlogging event beginning 67 days after sowing. Cotton (‘Deltapine 61’) plants (8 per lysimeter) were grown with two levels of added N (300 kg ha−1 and 30 kg ha−1) and two irrigation treatments (flooded and control). Measured soil-O2 levels decreased rapidly upon surface flooding because water displaced air and root zone respiration consumed O2. The rate of O2 consumption was 2.7 times greater in the high-N treatment than the low-N treatment. This difference was associated with a 1.8 fold difference in numbers of observed roots. Root growth was only slightly affected by flooding. Leaf growth decreased by 28%, foliage temperature increased 2.3% and apparent photosynthesis decreased by 16%. It is suggested that flooding reduced photosynthetic activity within 2 days while other stress symptoms became apparent after about 6 days. Although this stress was reflected in a trend for decreased plant productivity, the effect of flooding on boll dry mass at harvest was not significant at the level of replication used. The single waterlogging did not cause yield reductions comparable to those observed elsewhere when several waterlogging events were imposed.

    Notes: Summary Cotton is reported to be susceptible to waterlogging, and there is evidence that some of the symptoms shown by waterlogged plants are due to impaired uptake of nitrogen. To investigate this for cotton, the nitrogen nutrition of a field-grown crop was monitored when the plants were subjected to two short term periods of waterlogging of varying severity using a sloping plot water-table facility. Growth of severely waterlogged cotton decreased after 4 days in the first and second floodings, and these plants were wilted by the end of the first flooding but not the second. Waterlogging resulted in decreased concentrations of total-N and especially NO 3 − −N in the petiole and lamina of the youngest fully-expanded leaf. Uptake of N by waterlogged plants occurred, but was not as great as for well-aerated plants. The nitrate reductase activity of leaves was much lower in waterlogged plants. Stumps of detopped waterlogged plants did not exude sylem sap at the end of the first flooding, suggesting impaired solute uptake due to damaged roots. However, xylem exudate was obtained from stumps of waterlogged plants at the end of the second flooding, indicating adaptive changes to the root systems of these plants. Although cotton is reported to reduce little NO 3 − −N in its roots, analysis of xylem exudate showed that about half of the N exported by roots was as amino compounds. The concentration of amino compounds in xylem exudate from severely waterlogged plants was higher than in well-aerated plants. It was concluded that the growth reduction in waterlogged cotton was due partly to induced N-deficiency.
