    Notes: The bulk and local magnetic properties have been investigated for evaporated Gd-Fe alloy films. The origin of the multiresonance fields of amorphous Gd-Fe alloy films was speculated to be due to several compositionally different short-range-ordered structures. These results yield the locally different magnetic properties, such as the Curie temperatures, magnetizations, g values, and anisotropy field difference. The magnetization of the annealed alloy film increase mainly due to the ferromagnetically ordered α-Fe and α-Gd precipitates.

    Notes: We have investigated the relaxation dynamics of highly excited GaxIn1−xAsyP1−y/InP with 5-ps resolution using a mode-locked 1.054-μm Nd:glass laser. Two samples with band gaps of 1.49 and 1.24 μm were studied at room temperature by the time-resolved nonlinear transmission and transient grating techniques. At excited carrier densities (approximately-greater-than)5×1018 cm−3 carrier relaxation times as short as 6 ps have been measured. The results are consistent with ultrafast decay by stimulated radiative recombination, and time-integrated luminescence measurements support this interpretation. We find no evidence for plasma expansion. At lower densities the carrier relaxation is determined by Auger and bimolecular recombination, and longer decay constants in the range 100–500 ps are measured.

    Notes: The growth kinetics of two-dimensional crystalline phospholipid domains at the air/water interface is studied following a stepwise increase in density of interfacial molecules. In addition to pressure relaxation the development of domain size and shape and impurity distribution could be followed by fluorescence microscopy. All experimental findings agree, within a factor of 3, with results of simple model calculations. These consider the growth kinetics to be controlled by two-dimensional diffusion of impurities from the solid/lipid boundary (constitutional supercooling) and do not use any freely adjustable, but independently measurable parameters.

    Notes: Abstract The patterns of naturally growing ion currents associated with horizontally growing roots of Trifolium repens L. seedlings were measured in a simple low-salt bathing medium using a highly sensitive vibrating electrode. Current consistently enters the main elongation zone of the root and leaves from mature, elongated tissue. This current enters and leaves with densities of ca. 4.0–11.0 mA m−2 and 4.0 mA m−2, respectively. Current was also delected entering the zone of emerging root hairs and also the root-hair tips themselves.These results are a further example of the involvement of self-generated electrical fields in plant developmental processes. Possible, secondary rhizosphere-associated effects of the extracellular loop of the developmental current are also suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Growing roots of Nicotiana tabacum var. Havana generate transcellular ion currents which traverse developing and wounded tissues. Positive current of around 10 mA m−2 enters meristematic and elongating cells at the tip of primary roots. The growing tips of first order laterals are also traversed by a similar positive current with a density of around 2.0 mA m−2, as are immature laterals emerging at the primary root surface. These self-generated ion currents flow basipetally through developing tissues and leave from mature non-elongating tissue. A large positive current of around 70 mA m−2 also enters induced wound sites on the primary root surface. Motile zoospores of the fungal pathogen Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae have been reported to associate preferentially with these regions of the root. This might suggest that electrotaxis may be part of the mechanism by which zoospores locate root regions susceptable to fungal infection.

    Notes: : Mycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous fungal infection characterized by tumefaction, draining sinuses, and grains. It is most common in the tropics but occasionally occurs in the United States. We report a case of a mycetoma affecting the foot of a 38–year-old mentally retarded man from northern New England. The causal organism was identified as Pseudallescheria boydii, the most common cause of mycetoma in the United States. The patient showed a partial response to 8 months of ketoconazole therapy.

    Notes: Abstract— The multiple specimen technique was developed to measure the crack growth fracture resistance of a through axial crack in a pressurised pipe and the results compared with data measured from test specimens. The comparison indicates that there is no significant difference between pipe and specimen behaviour. The results are also compared with elastic-plastic three-dimensional finite element analyses of the pipe and the R6 failure assessment curve. Reasonably good agreement was found between the experimental results and finite element analyses. The experimental results all lie outside the material specific failure assessment curve of the R6 structural integrity assessment procedure.
