Description / Table of Contents: α-CH Acidity of Allylidene Complexes: Organorhenium Derivatives of 1,2,3-Butatriene by Dehydrochlorination of Rhena(V) Allylidenes. Synthesis and StructureThe rhena(V) allylidene complex (η5-C5Me5)ReCl2 [η1:η3-(CH3)-CC(Cl)CH2] (2) is quantitatively converted into the novel organorhenium 1,2,3-butatriene derivative (η5-C5Me5)ReCl2[η3-H2CC(C5H5N)CCH2] (3) by lithium hydroxide in the presence of excess pyridine. This result shows so far not investigated CH acidity of methyl groups, that are substituting π-bonded allylidene frameworks at the α-position. According to an X-ray structure analysis, the coordination geometry of the 1,2,3-butatriene ligand is very similar to related allyl complexes of the (η5-C5Me5)ReCl2 fragment.

Notes: Karpoxanthin and 6-EpikarpoxanthinA tetrahydroxy-β,β-carotene previously isolated in minute amounts from ripe hips of Rosa pomifera was now identified as (3S,5R,6R,3′R)-5,6-dihydro-β,β-carotene-3,5,6,3′-tetrol (2). Acid hydrolysis of (9Z)-antheraxanthin (3) gave 2 and its C(6)-epimer 4. Tetrol 2 is named karpoxanthin.

Notes: Carotenoids from Anthers and Petals of Lilium tigrinum cv. ‘Red Night’Amongst the 29 carotenoids separated and characterized by modern methods the following are worth mentioning: (9′Z)-, (9Z)-, (13′Z)- und (13Z)-capsanthins (20-23), the novel 6-epikarpoxanthin (= (3S,5R,6S,3′R)-5,6-dihydro-β,β-carotene-3,5,6,3′-tetrol; 25), karpoxanthin (= (3S,5R,6R,3′R)-5,6-dihydro-β,β-carotene-3,5,6,3′-tetrol; 28), and lilixanthin (= (3S,4S,3′S,5′R)-3,4,3′-trihydroxy-β,κ-carotene-6′-one; 26). The main carotenoids from the petals, in comparison with those of the anthers, represent a more advanced metabolic state.

Notes: The Toxic and Sedative Bufadienolides of Kalanchoe daigremontiana HAMET et PERR.From the toxic Crassulacee Kalanchoe daigremontiana five biosynthetically related bufadienolides have been isolated and structurally elucidated by X-ray and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The compounds were identified as bersaldegenin 1,3,5-orthoacetate (2), bersaldegenin 1-acetate (4), bersaldegenin 3-acetate (3), 1β,3β,5,11α,14-pentahydroxy-12,19-dioxo-5β,14β-bufa-20,22-dienolide 1,3,5-orthoacetate ( = daigremontianin; 1), and 3β-acetoxy-1β,5,14-trihydroxy-5β,14β-bufa-20,22-dienolide ( = daigredorigenin-3-acetate, 5). According to the pharmacological investigations, the two orthoacetates 1 and 2 comprise the positive inotropic, sedative, and toxic activity of the plant.

Notes: Stereoisomeric Sinensiaxanthins and Sinensiachromes: Separation and Absolute ConfigurationThe so-called sinensiaxanthins and sinensiachromes, important apocarotenols from various fruits, have been separated into 2 and 4 stereoisomers, respectively, and their absolute configurations have been determined: (3S,5R,6S)-5,6-epoxy-5,6-dihydro-10′-apo-β-carotene-3,10′-diol (2), its (9Z)-stereoisomer 7, the (8R)- and (8S)-epimers of (3S, 5R)-5,8-epoxy-5,8-dihydro- 10′ -apo-β-carotene-3, 10′-diol (4 and 5), and their (9Z)-stereoisomers 3 and probably 6. Thus, sinensiaxanthins are cleavage products from (Z/E)-isomeric antheraxanthins or violaxanthins (scission at C(9′)-C(10′)) and sinensiachromes analogously from mutatoxanthins or auroxanthins.

Notes: The bidentate diphosphine ligand, 3,3′-oxybis[(dipenylphosphino)methylbenzene] (1) forms monomeric, trans-square-planar complexes MX2(1) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; X = Cl-, Br- I-, and, in part, N3-, NCS-, CN-, NO3-) as well as Pt(H)Cl(1), Pt(H)Br(1), and RhCl(CO)(1). Polymeric species have been observed with substitutionally inert metal centres: trans-[PtCl2(1)]2 and cis-[PtCl2(1)]n (mean value of n ≈ 4-5) 31P-NMR, and selected IR and UV/VIS parameters are reported. Ligand 1 shows a marked preference for trans-spanning and monomeric chelate formation, despite its various degrees of freedom of internal rotation in the lignad backbone. The readily available ligand 1 as well as analogues with other donor atoms, therefore, appear useful in most potential applications of trans-spanning chelate ligands. The crystal structure of AgCl(1)·0.5 (CH3)2C=O·0.39 C6H12 (space group C2/c,a = 21.02 Å, b = 14.57 Å, c = 24.79 Å, β = 99.77°, V = 7531.4 Å3, Z = 8) confirms the presence of three-coordinate Ag(I), with a coordination intermediate between a trigonal-planar and a T-shaped geometry (P-Ag-P = 145.61(8)°).

Notes: Isolation of 10′-Apo-β-carotene-10′-ol and (3R)-10′-Apo-β-carotene-3,10′-diol (Galloxanthin) from Rose FlowersThe novel (all-E)-10′-apol-β-carotene-10′-ol (2) and (all-E,3R)-10′-apo-β-carotene-3,10′-diol (5) have been isolated from petals of one yellow species and various whitish or yellow blend varieties of rose cultivars. Each (all-E)-compound is accompanied by a (Z)-isomer, probably the (9Z)-isomer. Diol 5 proved to be identical with galloxanthin, an apo-10′-carotenol previously isolated from the retina of chicken.
