    Notes: Abstract Possible hepatitis B immunization of all newborns, regardless of the mother's HBsAg status, is a strategy under consideration for selected hyperendemic areas in Italy. Sardinia is one such area. However, in 1987 in Sardinia, the prevalence of hepatitis B markers in children under 11 years was estimated at 1.7% and the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) at 0.2%. A much higher prevalence of HBsAg was recently observed among adults in this area: 8.7% among men and 5.2% among pregnant women. This contrasting pattern is unlikely to be due to bias: the sampling procedures adopted were appropriate and the percentage of refusals was very low (2.2%). The observed low hepatitis B marker prevalence in young age groups might be the result of a cohort effect due to the improved socio-economic conditions and changes in behaviour that have occurred in Sardinia over the last few years. The finding of only 3 HBsAg+ individuals out of 1,826 children tested, in spite of the 5.2% HBsAg prevalence among pregnant women in that region, is probably attributable to the low proportion of HBeAg positive individuals among the HBsAg+ carrier mothers in this area. At present, immunization of all newborns in Sardinia cannot be recommended.

    Notes: Samples of crosslinked cis-polybutadiene were crystallized at different temperature and drawing degree. The melting behavior of the crystallized samples was analyzed detecting the retractive stress as a function of temperature. The experimental melting data were extrapolated to the equilibrium conditions to obtain the thermodynamic melting temperature as a function of the drawing degree. The extrapolated data were analyzed with different theoretical approaches. Results agree with a model in which chain-folding and extended-chain crystallization can coexist, depending on crystallization temperature and drawing degree.

    Notes: The semi-crystalline isotactic polypropylene was drawn to λ = 6,7,8,9,11 and the drawn samples heated to temperatures between 40 and 160°C. The shrinkage of the sample with λ = 7 and 11 was measured as function of time and temperature. The effect of shrinkage is higher with the smaller draw ratio as if the drawing increased the thermal stability of the sample. With fixed ends the drawn samples were heated at a constant rate and the retractive stress observed. It increases with λ and the heating rate. At the same drawing ratio λ, the curves of the retractive stress show a maximum and subsequently drop to a substantially smaller value that increases with the draw ratio and the distance of the highest temperature of the heating from the melting point of the sample. The cooling curve of the first run almost coincides with the heating and cooling curve of the next runs if one does not surpass the maximum temperature of heating of the first run. The time dependence of the retractive stress after an inital maximum decays more rapidly to the limiting value σ∞ (T) the higher the temperature of the experiment. The limiting value σ∞ (T) rapidly decreases with T and increases with λ.

    Notes: Strain and thermally induced crystallization was investigated in crosslinked 1,4-cis-polybutadiene. Data obtained at room temperature, where the crystallization can be only strain induced, show that at any given deformation the elastic modulus is a simple function of the crystalline content. On this basis, the modulus data were used to analyze the crystallization occurs with a two-stage mechanism that depends on deformation and temperature.

    Notes: Stress-induced crystallization of a crosslinked polybutadiene with a high 1,4-cis content is investigated, at room temperature. The change in the fraction of crystallinity with deformation is evaluated by two different methods. The first is based on simultaneous measurement of birefringence and stress. The second is based on calorimetric analysis. The data on crystallinity obtained by these two methods are in good agreement in the range of low deformations, while, in the range of higher deformation (λ 〉 5), the degree of crystallinity obtained by calorimetry is higher than that obtained by the optical method. Qualitative information on the crystallization was also obtained by optical analysis of the hysteresis behavior. The hysteresis data show the presence of ordering phenomena at deformations at which there seems to be no crystallinity according to both quantitative methods.
