Notes:
Summary Posttraumatic skin and soft tissue defects of the sole dorsum of the foot, heel, or ankle in 21 patients from 3–63 years of age were covered with local skin flaps, local myocutaneous flaps, cutaneous and myocutaneous cross-leg flaps, or split-skin grafts. The average follow-up was for 6 years. The long-term results were quite different, depending on the age of the patient. While the adults walked on the areas surrounding the flaps, with resultant hyperkeratosis or ulcers of the normal nonreconstructed skin, the children (aged 3, 3.5 and 6 years) walked on the whole sole, including the flaps, and hyperkeratosis developed on the flaps, but no ulcers.
