    Notes: A body-centered-cubic (BCC) lattice model with realistic many-body interactions is introduced and investigated by means of the Metropolis' Monte Carlo method to describe both crystalline and molten states of Si. Under the simplest assumption that atoms surrounded by tetrahedral first-neighbors only have an energy lower than the other atoms, a clear first-order phase transition including hysteresis is observed between a solid with diamond structure and a melt. Nucleation and domain growth are dynamically observed in certain range of the supercooling. In order to introduce more realistic and accurate lattice-gas models, the Tersoff potential is renormalized and the interactions are mapped onto a BCC lattice. Then, it is found that the phase transition temperature and other thermodynamic properties are dramatically improved compared with the case using the Tersoff potential directly in the lattice model without renormalization. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The "effective'' relaxation time τ of isolated star polymers with excluded volume interactions in the Rouse model limit (i.e., disregarding hydrodynamic interactions present in real solvents) is studied varying both the number of arms f and the number of monomers per arm l. Here τ is defined from the response of the gyration radius of the star polymer to a Kramers potential that describes the effect of shear flow in lowest order in the shear rate. Monte Carlo simulations are performed with two different techniques (simple sampling with enrichment or dynamic Monte Carlo, respectively) for two different models (simple self-avoiding walks with an extended core or the bond fluctuation model, respectively). It is proposed that the ratio τ(f,l)/τ(1,l) should be a universal function of f for large l, and the Monte Carlo data are used to test this hypothesis.

    Notes: Y2O3-doped Eu3+ (Y2O3:Eu) nanometer particles (NPs) were synthesized via a chemical route. The particle size estimated by x-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy was about 61 nm. Two photoluminescence peaks were observed at 582 and 587 nm, being attributed to the transition of 5D0→7F1a of Eu3+ in the S6 and C2 symmetry sites of Y2O3, respectively. The intensity ratio of the photoluminescence peaks at 582 nm to at 587 nm was larger for NPs than for micrometer particles (MPs). The excitation peak of NPs due to the charge-transfer band shifted toward the high-energy side as compared with that of MPs. According to x-ray diffractometry, the lattice distortion and the lattice constant were larger for NPs than for MPs, showing the restructure at the near surface and the increase in ionicity of the Eu–O bond with decreasing particle size. This explains the blueshift in the excitation peak. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rehabilitation of the oral cancer patient should aim to achieve not only morphological restoration but also post-operative functions. However, there are few reports describing quantitative evaluation of the latter. The authors have attempted quantitative evaluation of post-operative articulatory function after glossectomy, and report the evaluation of it by speech intelligibility, electropalatography (EPG), and acoustical analysis. Subjects were five directly sutured patients and five patients reconstructed with forearm flap, all after glossectomy. The target syllable was /ta/ from among speech intelligibility test samples. The speech intelligibility and acoustical analysis were investigated pre-operation, and 1, 6 and 12 months post-operation. EPG data were collected by DP-01(RION) at 6 months post-operation. Acoustical analyses were carried out by consonant frequency characteristics and formant variance from consonant to vowel transitions. As a result, subjects reconstructed with a forearm flap showed higher restorative tendency than directly sutured subjects. Articulatory characteristics expected from acoustical analysis were more in agreement with the results of EPG than with the results of the speech intelligibility test. From the results, it was suggested that the acoustical analysis used for this research could reveal changes in articulatory movement and will be useful for quantitatively evaluating post-operative articulatory functions.

    Notes: SUMMARY In order to undertake a quantitative evaluation of balance occlusal load, the use of the Dental Prescale System® was investigated. The method uses a test sheet that undergoes a colour-developing chemical reaction, for detecting contact area, and a computerized analysis system, for evaluating the balance of occlusal load. Twenty natural dentate subjects and 10 hemimaxillectomy patients participated in the study. Each subject bit a test sheet as hard as possible for 3 s. The balance of occlusal load was expressed as a percentage of the load on the side with the lesser occlusive load (%OLR). The %OLR ranged from 39.7% to 49.4% in the natural dentate subjects, and from 0% to 31.3% in the hemimaxillectomy patients at their resection site. The patients’low %OLRs were attributed to loss of sustaining structure and subjective occlusal adjustment by clinicians. Combining technical simplicity, relatively high reproducibility, and diverse analysis capability, this system is useful for quantitative evaluation of balance of occlusal load in clinical situations.

    Notes: Background Since dogs frequently develop allergic diseases, similar to those in humans, dogs represent a possible animal model for allergy in humans. In human atopic dermatitis (AD), CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) has been shown to play an important role in the development of allergic inflammation of AD; however, the association between allergic reaction and CCR4 is not well understood in dogs.Objective To examine CCR4 expression in peripheral blood CD4+ cells in dogs that had AD and were experimentally sensitized with Japanese cedar pollen.Materials and methods Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 17 dogs with AD. The proportion of CCR4+ cells in peripheral blood CD4+ cells (CCR4/CD4) was evaluated by flow cytometry and compared with that in 10 healthy dogs. Similarly, in dogs that were experimentally sensitized to Japanese cedar pollen antigen, the proportion of CCR4/CD4 was examined pre- and post-sensitization.Results The proportion of CCR4/CD4 in dogs with AD was 40.3±3.3%, which was significantly higher than that in normal dogs (23.6±4.3%) (P〈0.01). In the experimentally sensitized dogs, the proportion of CCR4/CD4 was 25.4±2.6% at pre-sensitization and it was significantly increased (29.8±2.9%) at post-sensitization (P〈0.01).Conclusion The proportion of CCR4+ cells in peripheral blood CD4+ cells was measured in dogs with allergic conditions. The present findings indicate that CCR4+ cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of allergy in dogs as in humans.
