Notes: The alloys NbGa3 - x form composition-driven long-period superstructures derived from the D022 by the introduction of non-conservative antiphase boundaries along (001) planes. The displacement vectors of successive antiphase boundaries are alternately ¼ [201] and ¼ [021]. In alloys with a composition which deviates less from NbGa3 than Nb5Ga13 successive antiphase boundaries all have the same displacement vector, either ¼ [201] or ¼ [021]. The alloy Nb5Ga13 is the first material which has a long-period superstructure based on the alternation of two types of antiphase boundaries.

Notes: Abstract The microcirculation is the fundamental nutrient supply and waste removal system of all tissues. Recent improvements in spectrophotometric technique have made possible the noninvasive assessment of oxygen supply and utilization in the gastric mucosa. The authors have utilized such methods to assess gastric mucosal hemodynamics. The technique permitted further clarification of the roles of the gastric microcirculation, mucosal oxygenation, and acid secretion in the pathogenesis of stress ulcers in the stomach of rats. Furthermore, it provided important information on the function of gastric mucosal hemodynamics in the healing of gastric ulcers in man. The technique is described along with the authors' correlation studies between spectrophotometric data and other techniques for measuring gastric blood flow (hydrogen gas clearance and aminopyrine clearance methods and direct electromagnetic flowmeter techniques) and the prevention of ulcerogenesis.

Notes: Summary Effect of colchicine on the ultrastructure of taste bud cells was studied in the mouse. In untreated mice microtubules were abundant throughout the entire cytoplasm of type-III cells, but only in the apical cytoplasm of type-I cells. After 2 h of colchicine treatment, no microtubules were observed in any taste bud cells; dense secretory granules in the apical cytoplasm of type-I cells mostly disappeared, and instead, numerous phagosomes appeared. It is suggested that colchicine causes an interruption of the transport of the secretory granules in type-I cells from the Golgi apparatus to the membrane of the apical surface, from which release occurs. In type-III cells, after 4 or 5 h of treatment, dense-cored vesicles scattered throughout the cytoplasm tended to increase in number; they were often observed to accumulate in the vicinity of the Golgi apparatus. Five hours after treatment with 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (5-HTP) following colchicine pretreatment, monoamine specific fluorescent cells and vesicles with highly electron-dense cores of type-III cells were still present. On the other hand, 5 h after 5-HTP treatment alone both fluorescent cells and vesicles with highly electron-dense cores had already disappeared. These observations suggest that the treatment with colchicine interrupts the transport of densecored vesicles of type-III cells to synaptic areas, in which those vesicles are presumed to discharge the neurotransmitter substance.

Notes: Abstract An emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of an amphoteric emulsifier of the betaine type; N,N-dimethyl-n-laurylbetaine (LNB), has been studied at various pH values. The relationships between the physicochemical properties of LNB aqueous solutions, the emulsion polymerization process and the characteristics of the synthesized latex particles were studied under various pH conditions. The polymerization rate and the particle number concentration decreased with increasing pH of LNB aqueous solution and changed in shape at both ca. pH 4 and pH 8–10. The properties of LNB aqueous solution also changed with the pH and changed in shape at the same pH as that of the emulsion polymerization. These pH values were in good agreement with the pH at which the LNB molecule changed its ionic form. The number of synthesized latex particles was proportional to the number of LNB micelles in the solution, below pH 10. The particle size of the synthesized latex particles and the molecular weight of the latex polymers also changed with the properties of LNB aqueous solutions, accompanying the change of the ionic form of LNB molecules.

Notes: This review is mainly concerned with the conformational changes that depend on the dielectric constants for solvents for chlorinated polybutadienes (Cl-PBD) and their model compounds. The conformational equilibria of the rotational isomers of both meso and racemie 2,3-dichlorobutanes and 3,4-dichlorohexanes as the model compounds are discussed by analyzing infrared and NMR spectra. The solvent effect on the conformational parameter in Cl-PBD is explained by the variation in the conformation of the chlorinated part having polar C-Cl bonds. The matrix method is also described to calculate the temperature and solvent dependences of conformer populations.
