    Notes: Summary The retention prediction system assisted by a micro-computer coupled with an UV multichannel detector has been investigated in the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The method offered very precise identification of components in NBS-SRM-1647 sample without any standard reference substances. It has been proven that the system makes very precise, non-pollutive and convenient environmental analysis possible.

    Notes: Summary A redesigned interface is reported for use in the detection of microcolumn liquid chromatographic effluents with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The solutes eluting from the column are continuously deposited onto a 50mm diameter KBr disk as a “buffer-memory”. The disk is rotated by a stepper motor with a controlling electronics. After the chromatographic run, the disk is simply transferred to the spectrometer and the transmission spectra are measured as the disk rotates. The use of such a large KBr disk as a substrate permits to obtain spectra of the components having a large capacity factor.

    Notes: Summary The most recent interest in liquid chromatography (LC) is the trend of column miniaturization, i.e., in reducing the diameter of the columns. Capillary columns used in LC can be classified into three types, based on the flow resistance factor ϕ defined by Knox as $$\phi = d^2 /K_0 = \Delta Pd^2 /\eta \mu L$$ where d is a characteristic dimension of the column (the internal diameter of the tube of the mean particle diameter of the packing), Ko is the specific column permeability, ΔP is the pressure drop along the column, η is the viscosity and μ the linear velocity of the mobile phase, and L is the column length. The first type of LC capillary columns have a ϕ value of about 30. These are theopen-tubular columns, with a retentive film or layer on the inside wall of the column tubing the diameter of which should be as small as possible. The second type of LC capillary columns (ϕ≃100) is made by losely packing a glass tube which is then drawn to smaller diameter. During the drawing process the particles will be partially inbedded into the tube wall. Finally the third type of LC capillary columns (ϕ≃500–1000) are made by slurry-packing 0.2–0.5 mm ID fusedsilica capillary tubes under high pressure. These columns are well packed. In the paper various aspects of these columns are reviewed and their relative performance discussed.

    Notes: Summary The relationship between the logarithmic capacity factor measured in reversed-phase liquid chromatography and the operating conditions including the mobile phase composition and the column temperature is investigated. The strategy described herein can offer the possibility to predict the retention of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons without any experiments and standard materials, by utilizing equations describing the relationships between retention, temperature, mobile phase composition and physicochemical properties of the solutes previously stored in the program of the microcomputer-assisted retention prediction system. This concept is one of the most promising techniques for the optimization of the separation conditions in reversed-phase liquid chromatography.

    Notes: Summary Separation behavior of fat soluble vitamins on various chemically bonded materials in non-aqueous reversedphases microcolumn liquid chromatography has been investigated. The best performance was found on a polymer-based octadecyl bonded phase. Optimization of separation for vitamins D2, D3, E and E acetate has been tried using this polymer-based column and it has been found that a binary mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and methanol gave complete separation of fat soluble vitamins.

    Notes: Summary The concept of retention prediction for the separation of phenylthiohydatoin-amino acid derivatives in isocratic reversed-phase liquid chromatography is described. A novel retention-solubility parameter, R, is defined, for the retention prediction strategy and the performance of this R value is evaluated by comparing measured and predicted retention data. Excellent agreement between these values were observed. It is concluded that the R value has a very high potential in describing the retention of phenylthiohydantopinamino acid derivatives withdifferent types of separation systems consisting of C-18, C-8 and phenethyl bonded stationary phases and various mobile phases.

    Notes: Summary The retention behavior of 15 peropyrene-type polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was investigated on various bonded stationary phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography. On diphenyl and naphthylethyl bonded phases, high correlations were obtained between the molecular polarizability of solutes and their retention. However, very low or no correlations were found on various octadecyl bonded phases. These facts are discussed by using the electrostatic interaction concept between the solutes and the stationary phase. We conclude that these observations are due to two reasons: the difference in the degree of planarity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the high ability of planarity recognition of octadecyl bonded phases.
