Summary An ICP detector is described which is compatible with microcolumn liquid chromatography. The total column effluent is concentrically nebulized and aspirated into a plasma flame. The carbon compounds are selectively detected by monitoring the characteristic emission line at 247.9 nm using water or aqueous solutions as the mobile phase. The detection limit for carbon is 500 ng or less, and the response is linear over at least two decades. The potential of this system is illustrated by a few applications.
