    Notes: The combination of transmission diffraction grating (free-standing gold bars), pinhole and film can be used for quantitative measurements of the x-ray spectra in the 0.1–1.5-keV region by adopting the procedures described. The steps consist of film calibration and deconvolution of overlapping contributions from different spectral orders. In addition, spatial resolution is available in the direction perpendicular to the dispersion axis for each x-ray energy. The working example presented is the characterization of an x-ray source created by a laser-target interaction, for possible use in x-ray microscopy or x-ray lithography.

    Notes: Some aspects of multiple-wavelength interaction on solid targets have been experimentally studied at CO2-laser wavelengths with 1-nsec pulses. Contrary to predictions, the use of a two-line (10.6- and 9.6-μm) source does not reduce the back reflection. This result could be explained by a very short Brillouin interaction length or/and a very low saturation level. The hot-electron production is also not significantly modified by multiline illumination. A signal at the frequency sum indicates that, even at Iλ2 as low as 5×1013 W cm−2 μm2, the critical surface is not well defined and that both the 9.6- and 10.6-μm light interact in the same resonant zone. Finally, significant sidebands were measured at 8.7 and 12 μm. Some 1 (1)/(2) -dimensional simulations with mobile ions indicate that those sidebands probably originate from the beat frequency resonant density at 0.0123nc.

    Notes: The diagostic value of odd-integer half-harmonic emission from laser-produced plasmas is evaluated in the light of recent spectral measurements on UV irradiation experiments. It has been found that under certain conditions a sharp, slightly red-shifted feature is observed in the ω/2 spectra. This feature has been identified with a particular mode of the 2ωp decay instability for which one of the plasmon wave vectors vanishes. This feature is eminently well suited for coronal electron temperature measurements. Another half-harmonic (blue-shifted) feature is more easily observed and may serve as a secondary—though less accurate—temperature diagnostic. In contrast, the spectral splitting of the (3)/(2) harmonic emission proved to be ill suited for temperature diagnostics because of its sensitivity to irradiation and observation geometry. Either ω/2 or 3ω/2 emission is, however, a good qualitative indicator for the presence of the 2ωp decay instability although quantitative inferences on the level of the 2ωp decay instability are not possible at this point.

    Notes: Temporal and spatial measurements of electron heat transport are made in the University of California Davis AURORA device (J. H. Rogers, Ph.D. dissertation, University of California, Davis, 1987). In AURORA, a microwave pulse heats a region of underdense, collisional, plasma (n/ncr (approximately-less-than)1, where ncr =1.8×1010 cm−3 is the critical density, Te0 ≈0.15 eV, and the electron scattering mean free path λ⊥(approximately-greater-than)2 cm). In this region, strong thermal heating (Tc (approximately-less-than)0.7 eV) as well as suprathermal heating (Th≈3 eV) is observed. The strong heating results in a steep temperature gradient that violates the approximations of classical heat diffusion theory (LT/λ⊥(approximately-greater-than)3 for thermal electrons, where LT=Tc(∂Tc/∂z)−1 is the cold electron temperature scale length. The time evolution of the electron temperature profile is measured using Langmuir probes. The measured relaxation of the temperature gradient after the microwave pulse is compared to calculations using the Fokker–Planck International code [Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1936 (1982)] and the multigroup, flux-limited, target design code lasnex [Comm. Plasma Phys. 2, 51 (1975)]. The electron distribution function at the end of the microwave pulse is used as initial conditions for both codes. The Fokker–Planck calculations are found to agree very well with the measurements. However, the flux-limited diffusion calculations do not agree with the measurements for any value of the flux limiter.

    Notes: Narrow Raman spectra can be produced when the collisional damping rate becomes comparable to the homogeneous growth rate for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Landau damping limits the SRS spectrum at short wavelength, and collisional damping can limit it at long wavelength through the variation of the damping rate with plasma density. Data are shown to demonstrate this effect for the first time, from experiments in which constant-intensity pulses of 0.35 μm light irradiated 3 μm thick CH targets at intensities up to 2×1014 W/cm2. The observed spectra have a peak wavelength, spectral width, spectral shape, and shift of the peak in time that are consistent with the anticipated effects of damping. Reduction of the emission from the plasma to near thermal levels at heavily damped frequencies is also demonstrated. In addition, the application of two specific models of SRS to these data is discussed.

    Notes: An experimental technique is demonstrated that allows variation of the average laser intensity by more than two orders of magnitude while producing much smaller changes in the other parameters that determine the laser–plasma interactions. By irradiating exploding-foil targets with 0.35 μm laser light in flat-topped pulses of variable duration, the high-power Nova laser [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 57, 2101 (1986)] produced plasmas with electron temperatures of order 1 keV and with scale lengths of the (radial and axial) electron-density gradients of order 1000 laser wavelengths. By using a constant target thickness and systematically decreasing the pulse length and spot size as laser intensity increased, the changes in the temperature and in the scale lengths were minimized. The time-resolved spectrum of the Raman-scattered light was used to measure both the electron temperature and the maximum density of the expanding plasmas. In this paper, these measurements are compared to both 1-D models and 2-D simulations. The expected trends of slower burnthrough and lower temperature with lower laser intensity were observed. However, the inferred temperatures are lower and the burnthrough of the target (at high laser intensities) is slower than the modeling predicts. Possible sources of these discrepancies are discussed.

    Notes: In their comment, Simon and Short argue that their enhanced plasma wave model remains a possible explanation of the data reported in a previous paper [Phys. Fluids 31, 3130 (1988)]. While their clarifications of this model do invalidate the single, numerical argument used in that paper to reject it, a number of reasons remain to be skeptical of this model. In the present reply, these reasons are summarized.

    Notes: In this paper a study of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from relatively planar plasmas irradiated with short-wavelength (0.53 μm) laser light is reported. The Novette Laser Facility [Laser Part. Beams 3, 173 (1985)] produced several kilojoules of light in 1 nsec, which allowed it to irradiate a large spot with enough intensity to produce significant Raman scattering. These experiments measured the fluence, angular distribution, spectrum, and timing of the Raman light, as a function of the average laser intensity. Reductions in the Raman fluence at low laser intensity are attributed to collisional damping. The measured SRS fluence was larger than that predicted from convective amplification of bremsstrahlung noise, as calculated using the average properties of the laser beam and the plasma. Possible contributions to the observed scattering from enhanced noise, Raman scattering within filaments, and the absolute Raman instability at density extrema are discussed.

    Notes: A general approximate criterion is developed (via WKB analysis) for the absolute instability of two parametrically pumped decay waves with one-dimensional inhomogeneity. The absolute instability threshold pump power proves to be higher than that required for amplitude amplification R by a factor πk'l2/27R, when k' is the phase mismatch dΣki/dx at the location of maximum instability and l−2 is the effective curvature of the necessarily second-order expansion about that point. Previous results are included as special cases.
