Notes: Ultraviolet and visible chemiluminescence have been observed from the reactions of C+ with CO2, NO2, and N2O in a flowing afterglow. The CO+(A–X) chemiluminescence from v′=0–2 was identified in the C++CO2 reaction, while chemiluminescence from levels up to v′=11 was found in the C++NO2 and N2O reactions. The relative vibrational populations of CO+(A) have been determined and are compared with statistical prior distributions. The experimental data show that only about 10% of the total available energy is deposited in the CO+(A) vibration for all cases. The relative rate constants for formation of CO+(A) in the C++CO2, O2, NO2, and N2O reactions are estimated to be 1.0:9.8:18:60, respectively. In the C++N2O reaction, CN(A–X,B–X) chemiluminescence was also observed: the CN(B–X) system is produced exclusively as a result of rotational perturbations between the B and A states. Adiabatic correlation diagrams have been used to explain the specific formation of the emitting excited species.

Notes: Abstract The thickening process of polyethylene single crystals was simulated with computer by the Monte Carlo method. According to the experimental results in the previous report, the time dependence of the long period changed greatly with annealing temperature; at lower temperatures the long period increased gradually, while at high temperatures the long period rapidly increased at a very early stage of annealing and then increased gradually after passing through a plateau. Through computer simulation, it was shown that such a great change in the time dependence of the long period with annealing temperature can be explained by combining two mechanisms: (A) sliding diffusion of molecular segments along the chain axis and (B) local melt-recrystallization (namely, local melting followed by recystallization).

Notes: Summary Alanine was the best amino donor among various amino acids and NH4Cl for the phenylalanine production of Micrococus luteus. l-Alanine was regenerated at the rate of 9.2μ moles/min/g dry cells from NH4Cl and pyruvate by immobilized Clostridium butyricum-alanine dehydrogenase. l-Phenylalanine was continuously produced from hydrogen, NH4Cl and phenylpyruvate by coupling immobilized C. butyricum, alanine dehydrogenase and M. luteus. The rate of phenylalanine production was 1.74 μ moles/min/g dry cells.

Notes: Summary The lipoperoxide values and glutathione peroxidase activity in blood plasma, along with the glutathione peroxidase, catalase and cupro-zinc superoxide dismutase activities in erythrocytes were investigated in 60 women with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and in 71 healthy women. The mean lipoperoxide value and the mean plasma glutathione peroxidase activity in the diabetic patients were significantly higher than those in the control subjects (lipoperoxidep〈0.001, plasma glutathione peroxidase activityp〈0.01). The plasma glutathione peroxidase activities did not, however, correlate with the plasma lipoperoxide values. The erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity was approximately ten times higher than that of the plasma glutathione peroxidase activity, nor did they correlate with each other. In contrast to the findings of other authors on the activities of the protective enzymes in erythrocytes against oxidative damage, there were no significant differences of erythrocytes glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities between diabetic and control women.

Notes: Abstract Electron micrographs of parallel arrays of negatively stained ramie cellulose protofibrils were analyzed using the two-dimensional digital autocorrelation function (ACF). The method is based upon the statistical analysis of images in real space. The ACF shows strong parallel streaks of high correlation, and the lateral distance between adjacent streaks allows the mean interfibrillar distance to be estimated as 3.7 nm. The intensity profile along the streaks shows a weak modulation with peaks occurring at integral multiples of 3 or 6 nm. These results provide direct evidence that there is a regular axial texture in the protofibrils, and corroborate the conclusions previously drawn from optical diffraction analysis. Using the difference vectors found in the ACF it has been possible to reduce the picture noise level by linear integration, thereby obtaining an enhanced image. A preliminary result obtained in this way suggests that the projected protofibril morphology associated with the observed axial periodicity is a ribbon-like zigzag structure. Possible applications of the method for future work are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Ion-exchange selectivities towards oxoanions and halide ions were studied for radio-chemical applications by an amorphous hydrous titanium dioxide (Am-HTDO) as functions of pH and concentration. The selectivity series was found to be Mo(VI)〈W(VI)〈P(V)〈As(V)〈Sb(V) for micro-amounts at pH 9 and Br−≈Cl−≪F− for macro-amounts. A feasibility was suggested for radiochemical separations of32P by35Cl(n,α)32P and77Br by75As(α, 2n)77Br, and selective removal of anionic radionuclides.
