Notes: The rate coefficients for the reactions of Ar+ and Ar+2 with CH4 and CS2 are obtained as a function of energy by using a selected ion flow tube with an electric drift field (SIFT-DRIFT). A diagnostic analysis of the system and technique has been completed and allows rate coefficients to be reported with a high level of confidence. Rate coefficients and product branching ratios are determined for the methane reactions from thermal (room temperature) to center-of-mass kinetic energies of about 0.15 eV and for the carbon disulfide reactions from thermal to about 0.6 eV. The overall rate coefficients for these reactions do not vary a great deal over the investigated energy range. The greatest dependence is found for the slowest reaction Ar+ with CS2, where a minimum in the rate coefficient is observed near 0.15 eV. The behavior of the branching ratios for S+ and CS+2 suggests curve crossings between a repulsive state and the A, B, and C electronic states of CS+2.

Notes: Infrared and Raman spectra of the discotic liquid crystal molecules benzene–hexa-hexanoate (BH6), benzene–hexa-heptanoate (BH7), benzene–hexa-octanoate (BH8), and benzene–hexa-nananoate (BH9), and of mixtures of BH7 with BH8, are reported as a function of temperature. The 1615 cm−1 infrared band is strong in the Raman spectrum of BH7 and is taken as a characteristic of and diagnostic for central core disorder in all these molecules and mixtures. The aliphatic side chains are shown to disorder at much lower temperatures than the central core, and order in the central core is shown to remain throughout the liquid crystalline region.

Notes: Emission spectra were analyzed for transitions of O2 (B 3∑−u, v'→X 3∑−g, v‘) with v‘ as high as 35. The X 3∑−g potential energy function, Vx (r), was determined nearly to the dissociation limit with an estimated accuracy of ±50 cm−1. Vx (r) is compared to the highest level ab initio calculation available. The transition dipole moment function, μ(r), for the O2 Schumann–Runge band is also extended almost to the dissociation limit. The O2 molecule now provides one of the best testing grounds for ab initio theories of dissociation and radiation.

Notes: Local linear stability theory is used to investigate the stability characteristics of a circular cylinder wake at values of the Reynolds number, Re, up to 45. Both the Orr–Sommerfeld and Rayleigh analyses for complex frequency and wavenumber are applied to computed basic, steady wake profiles. These velocity profiles are Navier–Stokes solutions of a uniform, incompressible viscous flow around a cylinder, which we obtain by a spectral method. The distributions of convective and absolute instabilities in the near wake behind the cylinder are determined for different Reynolds numbers and locations. The study shows that an absolutely unstable region begins to form at Re of about 20, and grows with increasing Re. Hence the onset of global response of instability, which is known to occur at Re of about 40, must be characterized by a critical length of an absolutely unstable region. A criterion to determine the critical Reynolds number Rec and the preferred frequency, from local linear stability analysis, is proposed. The predicted values of Rec and frequency for global response agree well with the prediction of nonparallel stability analysis and experimental results.

Notes: Experiments were done in 1983,1984 and 1985 in Beijing and Zhengzhou, People's Republic of China, to determine the relationship of yield components of wheat to the severity of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici). Epidemics were manipulated by timing inoculation and fungicide applications. Disease, plant yield, number of ears per plant, number of grains per ear and 1000-grain weight were measured. Analysis indicated that there were interactions among the yield components. However, path coefficient analysis did not detect any statistically significant compensation and showed that there was a positive correlation among yield components. The correlation coefficients between AUDPC (area under disease progress curve, accumulated to each growth stage) and each yield component increased gradually with growth stage, thus providing no evidence of a critical stage at which a yield component was most affected by disease.

Notes: Abstract A method to calculate the effect of the Pauli exclusion principle in multiparticle and hole state densities is proposed. The model-independent method can be essentially extended to any multi-fermion system. For an application to the exciton model, both the strict expression of state densities and the exact Pauli exclusion correction have been obtained in the equidistant spacing model. The enhancement of the exact Pauli exclusion correlation implies that the Pauli exclusion principle plays a quite important role in state densities.

Notes: Summary Sixteen elements were determined in 156 specimens of 47 species of New Caledonian Flacourtiaceae including the genera Casearia, Homalium, Lasiochlamys and Xylosma. The data were used to study inter-elemental relationships, particularly those involving nutrient elements, magnesium and phytotoxic elements such as chromium, cobalt and nickel. Phytotoxic chromium was not accumulated to any marked degree by any taxon. Cobalt was inversely correlated with boron and sodium, and nickel with both nutrients as well as manganese. The data seemed to indicate the overriding controlling factor of reduced nutrient uptake caused by elements present in high concentrations in serpentinic substrates. It would seem that this reduced uptake is a major factor in the ‘serpentine problem’, at least as far as the Flacourtiaceae and the New Caledonian environment is concerned. By contrast, the toxic effects of elements such as nickel, cobalt and chromium seems less important.
