Notes: Abstract— The axonal transport of radioactive ACh, which was labelled by injecting radioactive choline into the ventral horn of the cat, was studied. Radioactivity analysed as ACh was transported in the nerves at a rate of 20–25 cm/24 h from the place of injection. Morphological and biochemical analysis after density gradient centrifugation revealed that endogenous ACh was principally distributed in three fractions-(a) a soluble fraction (provided homogenization was carried out in the presence of eserine), (b) a vesicular fraction (diameter 600–1600 A) in the 0.4M-sucrose layer of the density gradient, and (c) a fraction containing very small structures (size 90–100 A) in the 0.8–1.0 M-sucrose interphase. The radioactive ACh, however, was exclusively found in the soluble fraction (supernatant) after density gradient centrifugation. Analysis of ACh metabolites showed that radioactive ACh may have been formed locally in the nerves after transport of its precursor. Thus the morphologic and metabolic results do not support the hypothesis that ACh is transported in vesicles.

Notes: : The delineation of inland wetlands requires close field examination of the biological and physical gradients (transition zones) between wetlands and bordering uplands. As part of a study on the detection and delineation of inland wetlands in eastern Connecticut by remote sensing techniques, this effort was designed to investigate vegetation distribution and composition and selected physical and chemical properties of the soils of wetland to upland transition zones in deciduous wetland forests. Field research was conducted during the growing season of 1975 within a test area consisting of the 45 mi2 Town of Mansfield, Connecticut. Changes in vegetation composition and structure, soil pH, and soil water content were determined along line transects extended over wetland to upland transition zones. Differences in soil pH occurred along the transects but were of such magnitude that they probably have little impact on plant distribution. There were significant changes in soil water content along the wetland to upland gradients. Discriminant analysis applied to statistical “index of abundance” data describing vegetation distribution among the various zones (wetland, transition, upland) showed which plant species best distinguish wetlands from uplands. Of the criteria studied, vegetation composition and distribution, soil water content, and relief are the most useful criteria for delineating deciduous wetland forests.

Notes: The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether mechanical shear values of the cardiac muscle could be useful in predicting skeletal muscle tenderness as measured by mechanical shear and sensory evaluation methods. The metal ion content of bovine skeletal muscle was also determined and evaluated for its ability to predict skeletal muscle tenderness. W-B shear results indicate cardiac muscle tenderness is related to semimembranosis tenderness, but the magnitude of the correlation coefficient is not high enough for adequate prediction capabilities. However, the predictive capability of element content is very good for all three tenderness measures-sensory panel, W-B and rotary shear. These results indicate the good potential of this approach to tenderness prediction.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit diskutieren wir die rechnerischen Gesichtspunkte zweier Algorithmen von E. I. Jury zur Entscheidung ob alle Nullstellen eines Polynoms mit ganzzahligen Koeffizienten im Einheitskreis liegen.
Notes: Abstract In this paper we discuss the computational aspects of two algorithms due to E. I. Jury for determining if all the zeros of a polynomial with integer coefficients lie within the unit circle. We show that Jury's original algorithm asymptotically requires an exponential amount of computing time when variable-precision arithmetic is employed. We show that his modified algorithm requires only a polynomially bounded amount of computing time when variable-precision arithmetic is employed. Finally we produce a congruence arithmetic algorithm analogous to Jury's modified algorithm which requires less computing time than Jury's modified algorithm.

Notes: Conclusion These studies on isolated intact mast cell granules, indicate that changes in the concentration of the divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+)alone cannot explain the membrane fusions and histamine release during sequential exocytosis in mast cells.
