Notes: Summary When rabbit was exposed to high concentration of oxygen, lipoperoxide in the retina was increased at 12 h of the exposure, after which period amplitude of electro-retinogram decreased. The degeneration was observed in the visual cell layer of the retina of the exposed animal. The exposure increased lipoperoxide in isolated retina. These data show the intervention of lipoperoxide in retinal degeneration induced by exposure to high concentration of oxygen.

Notes: Summary Insertion of iron nail into the vitreous cavity provoked the formation of lipoperoxide in the retina. In accord with the increase in lipoperoxide in the retina, ERG began to decrease. In vitro experiment using isolated retina, lipoperoxide was found to be increased in the presence of ferric or ferrous ions, while it was inhibited by adding antioxidants or ethylenediamine tetraacetate. From these results, direct cause of retinal degeneration in siderosis could be ascribed to the formation of lipoperoxide by iron-ions liberated from the piece of iron, resulting into the degeneration of the visual cell layers of the retina.

Notes: Abstract Polycarbosilane as the precursor of continuous SiC fibre was synthesized by thermal decomposition of polydimethylsilane. The structure of the polycarbosilane is concluded to be similar to that of polysilapropylene by the measurements of i.r. spectra, NMR spectra and chemical analyses. Its formation mechanisms are initially the formation of carbosilane by thermal decomposition of polydimethylsilane and then the increase in molecular weight by dehydrogenation-condensation of the carbosilane. Molecular structure and molecular weight distribution of the polycarbosilane depend on the reaction temperature.

Notes: Abstract The polycarbosilane (PC-470) synthesized by thermal decomposition of polydimethylsilane was melt-spun. The conversion process of the fibre into silicon carbide fibre was investigated by chemical analysis, TG-DTA and infra-red spectrum analysis, and measurements of the mechanical properties and densities. The conversion process of polycarbosilane (PC-TMS) synthesized by Fritz was examined and compared with the conversion process of PC-470. It is shown that the process is divided into three stages; condensation at the first stage, thermal decomposition at the second stage and crystallization at the third stage. The mechanical properties and density of the SiC fibre obtained by heattreatment were affected by the molecular weight and structure of the polycarbosilane of the starting material.

Notes: Abstract Environmental health monitoring and surveillance include activities such as collection of information on the production and use of chemicals; preparation of inventories of waste discharges; measurement of physical, chemical and biological agents in air, water and food, at work place and at home; epidemiological investigations, and collection and analysis of environmental, and health statistical data. There are two main objectives of these activities: estimation of human exposure to potentially harmful environmental factors and timely detection of adverse health effects; and the assessment of environmental conditions in relation to established guidelines and standards. Environmental health monitoring and surveillance projects initiated, organized and implemented by the Specialized Agencies and other bodies of the United Nations system include monitoring of air and water quality and of food and animal feed contamination; pilot projects on air pollution exposure assessment and biological monitoring; and ionizing radiation surveillance. Principles of environmental and health monitoring in occupational environment, and of monitoring and surveillance of environmental health effects are outlined. Two examples are provided of national environmental health surveillance systems.
