    Notes: Summary The caloric stimulation is the only possibility how the otolaryngologist may examine separately the function of the vestibular organs. But in patients with chronic mesotitis and a tympanic perforation, we were not able to irrigate the labyrinths, and therefore had no knowledge of labyrinthic defects in those patients. Our new method — called thermostimulator — now allows us, to irrigate the ears with tympanic perforations. 75 patients were tested. 50 ears with a central perforation had a labyrinthine defect of 9.5% compared with the normal side, in 33 ears with a cholesteatoma, we found a defect of 33.2%.

    Notes: Summary In patients with vestibular disturbances the examination of vestibulospinal reflexes belongs to the normal neurotological test-battery. We use Romberg's test, Unterberger's test and WOFEC (walk on floor eyes closed). On one hand, these tests usually are analysed visually and therefore are quoted subjectivly. On the other hand, they are often used by patients to simulate pathologic test-results or aggravate weak pathologic findings. The computer analysis of an electronically performed Romberg test may help to gain more objectivity. It can be shown, that analysis of body motion itself is less effective than the analysis of variations of its velocity.

    Notes: Summary During a long time constant thermic stimulation of the labyrinth a well known decay of nystagmus occurs due to a central compensatory reaction. Short time after termination of the stimulus we saw a marked increase of nystagmus, which can be explained neither by thermic processes in the temporal bone nor by compensatory reactions alone. This phenomenon will be described in dependance of different stimuli.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 5 aus lyophilisierter menschlicher Dura (LMD) hergestellte und Hunden implantierte Arterienprothesen wurden nach 4, 5 1/2, 13, 43 und 46 Monaten entnommen und elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht. Die Neointima aller Implantate bestand aus Pseudo-Endothelzellen, Fibrozyten und Kollagenfibrillen. 43 und 46 Monate nach Implantation waren außerdem glatte Muskelzellen und elastische Mikrofibrillen in der Neointima vorhanden. Diese entsprach somit in ihrer Zusammensetzung im wesentlichen der Neointima von Kunststoff- und Kollagen-Kunststoff-Arterienprothesen. Die klinische Erprobung von LMD-Implantaten als arterieller Gefäßersatz ist jedoch wegen degenerativer Wandveränderungen in den Prothesen mit fast vierjähriger Verweildauer vorerst noch zu früh.
    Notes: Summary Five arterial prostheses made of lyophilized human dura (LHD) were inserted into dogs and removed after 4, 5 1/2, 13, 43, and 46 months to be studied with the electron microscope. The neointima of all grafts consisted of pseudo-endothelial cells, fibrocytes, and collagen fibrils. Additionally, 43 and 46 months after implantation smooth muscle cells and elastic microfibrils were present. Thus, the composition of the neointima was substantially identical with that of the neointima of synthetic arterial grafts and collagenfabric ones. The clinical application of arterial prostheses of LHD, however, seems at present too early because of degenerative changes in the walls of those grafts which remained nearly 4 years in the dogs.

    Notes: Summary The spatial distribution of inhibitory effects mediated by spino-olivocerebellar pathways and evoked by stimulation of the FRA was studied in Deiters' nucleus by intracellular recordings and extracellular measurements of positive field potentials. At a given recording site individual nerves greatly varied in their effectiveness: Q and Saph, Tib and FDL were usually the most effective, while GS had very little effect. When comparing several recording sites, various patterns of dominating and nondominating nerves were found, resulting in a somewhat patchy distribution of responses. The results were supported by intracellular recordings, which showed that CF-mediated IPSPs can be evoked from a limited number of nerves only. The findings show that a discriminative pattern exists in the FRA-evoked spino-olivocerebellar-mediated inhibition. In addition, Deiters neurones were found in which the inhibition was evoked from a large number of fore- and hindlimb nerves. Such a generalized inhibitory pattern may be involved in interlimb coordination during locomotion.

    Notes: Summary Representative arable soils from Hesse were investigated for their contents of fixed NH4 + and EUF-extractable potassium in the rooting zone. Alluvial soils were found to be rich in fixed ammonium and low in EUF-extractable potassium, while soils of basaltic origin were low in fixed ammonium and rich in EUF-extractable potassium. A negative correlation (r=0.79*) was found between fixed NH4 + and EUF-extractable soil K+. The content of fixed NH4 + in the soil profile showed considerable and significant changes during the growing season, which finding is supposed to be due to NH4 + uptake by the crop.

    Notes: Summary Maximum reaction following accelerated optokinetic stimulation in human is about 40°/s. These maximal values remain constant even by increasing stimulation. The stimulation rates are not physiologically. Under the conditions of such long and not physiological stimulations hormons of pituitary were determined. Immediately after the stimulation as well as 15 min later, elevated ADH levels were measured. Serum levels of hGH and cortisol remain unchanged, whereas serum prolaktin levels decrease slightly.

    Notes: Summary Earlier investigations showed the optimal parameters for the optokinetic test with accelerated stimuli. The acceleration is 1.2 degrees/s2 and the maximum stimulus velocity is 40 degrees/s. As we can show now, this test for patients is much more difficult than the tests with constant velocities. As a result we gain more pathologic results. We compared the accelerated tests with constant velocities of 20, 40, and 60 degrees/s.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Posturographische Messungen auf Plattformen mit piezoelektrischen Druckfühlern sind ein inzwischen verbreitetes Verfahren bei der Gleichgewichtsprüfung. Die elektronische Auswertung einer solchen Untersuchung ist sehr aufwendig, jedoch unerläßlich für eine differenzierte Beurteilung. Voraussetzung für die Auswertung und die Beurteilung ist die Darstellung der Körperschwerpunktschwankungen bei Gesunden. An einem großen Kollektiv wurden die intra-und interindividuellen Unterschiede beim Romberg-Test anhand einer quantitativen Auswertung aufgezeigt und diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary Posturographic measurements on platforms with piezoelectric recording techniques are a common method in the examination of balance. Its electronic analysis requires in-depth efforts, but is necessary for an exact evaluation. Precondition for the analysis and the evaluation is the description of the sway path of the center of gravity in healthy subjects. Intra-and interindividual differences in the Romberg-test are evident and under discussion from a wide selection of normal individuals by means of a quantitative evaluation.

    Notes: Summary Using a semiautomatic off-line analysis of nystagmus the examiner decides whether an eye-movement is a nystagmic beat or not. We use as base for our development a device described by F. Guedry and A. J. Benson, which measures the speed of slow component (y-axis) and the time course (x-axis) with two potentiometers. We summarize the voltage of y-axis in variable periods and display them as degree per second. The voltage of x-axis is displayed directly. The output is performed digitally, on a digital pointer, on a x-y recorder and in ASCI code for further computerization.
