Notizen: Summary The brains of five cases of severe infantile from of Werdnig-Hoffmann (W-H) disease were studied to observe the pathologic changes of sensory neurons and the thalamus. The present study disclosed severe cell loss, chromatolytic degeneration, and empty cell beds of the spinal anterior horn and cranial motoneurons (V, VII, X, XII). Glial bundles were also noted in the anterior roots. In the sensory systems, glial bundles in the posterior roots (2/5), ghost cells in Clarke's column (2/5), and degeneration of the thalamus, mainly in the lateral formation (4/4) were noted. It was demonstrated that not only degeneration of lower motor neurons and glial bundles in the anterior roots, but also degeneration of sensory neurons and thalamus were present in W-H disease. These findings suggested the possibility that W-H disease is a multisystemic disease involving both the anterior and posterior root systems. No sensory involvement was found clinically. Characteristic wrist drop was observed in four cases, two of which also having motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) delay. On the other hand, MCV of another case without wrist drop was normal. The possibility that wrist drop might be one of the clinical features of peripheral nerve dysfunction was discussed, but further pathologic evaluation of peripheral nerves is needed.

Notizen: Summary A surgical carbon dioxide laser unit (laser) has been used since 1977 in twentyfive cases of various brain tumours, including ten meningiomas (four sphenoid ridge, two parasagittal, two falx, one olfactory, one posterior fossa), eleven gliomas (seven glioblastoma, four astrocytoma), two metastatic brain tumours, one haemangioblastoma, and one arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The criteria for laser use, as based on evaluation and location of meningioma, were: grade 1, convenient but adjuvant; grade 2, also necessary; grade 3, indispensable. The laser is obligatory in sphenoid ridge meningioma in order to peel the tumour away from the internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery, cavernous sinus etc. The grade of necessity for laser use is therefore either 2 or 3. In convexity or parasagittal meningioma, on the other hand, the necessity grade is either 1 or 2. In the glioma group hemorrhage in seven cases of glioblastoma was easily laser-controlled, and the tumours were wasted away in a short time through vaporization, with minimum mechanical effect on adjacent tissue. The laser is therefore very useful in cases of glioma, especially glioblastoma, considering the shortened operating time, decreased blood loss, and extended area of tumour resection. Laser surgery is proposed as being most appropriate, mainly for its vaporizing and coagulating functions, in cases of brain tumour involving the elderly and poor risk cases.

Notizen: It is shown that ion-dipole interactions induce considerable miscibility enhancement in blends of styrene ionomers with poly(alkylene oxides). Dynamic mechanical studies, in conjunction with transparency and brittleness of the samples, are used to evaluate miscibility. The effect is clearly thermodynamics in that phase separation can be induced in miscible samples by raising the temperature, with miscibility reestablished ons cooling. The miscibility enhancement in these systems is compared with that resulting from hydrogen bonding. In addition to the styrene/alkylene oxide system, ion-dipole interactions are found to be effective in enhancing the miscibility of many ionic polymer/polar polymer pairs. The ionomers used in this study were styrene lithium methacrylate and ethyl acrylate lithium acrylate copolymers, while polyethers, polysulfides, polyesters, polyimines, and substituted polyethylenses served as polar polymers.
