Notes: Abstract We derive a cluster expansion for the electric susceptibility kernel of a dielectric suspension of spherically symmetric inclusions in a uniform background. This also leads to a cluster expansion for the effective dielectric constant. It is shown that the cluster integrals of any order are absolutely convergent, so that the dielectric constant is well defined and independent of the shape of the sample in the limit of a large system. We compare with virial expansions derived earlier in statistical mechanics for the dielectric constant of a nonpolar gas. In these expansions the virial coefficients are given by integrals which are only conditionally convergent.

Notes: Summary We have partially characterized the specificity of serum lectins from the scorpionVaejovis spinigerus Wood. Agglutination, crossed-absorption and hemagglutination-inhibition patterns were similar but not identical to serum lectins from other members from the family Vaejovidae, and different from the Buthidae species studied so far.V. spinigerus serum lectins bind sialic acids and sialoconjugates, but also bind 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate, uronic acids and N-acylaminosugars, all substances present in bacterial cell walls suggesting that they might be involved in defense functions.

Notes: Abstract Two children aged 18 and 30 months presented with severe renovascular hypertensio. Initially, surgical intervention was postponed because of the patients' young age. Adequate control of the hypertension and reversal of its sequelae were achieved with aggressive medical management. At present, both patients, aged 9 and 12 years respectively, have discontinued all medication, have achieved normal growth, are normotensive and have normal renal function.

Notes: Abstract This paper, as part of a series on elastic wave scattering, presents results of measurements and calculations on scattering of ultrasonic waves by a solid spherical inclusion (tungsten carbide) embedded in titanium alloy by the diffusion bonding process. Both direct scattering and mode-converted scattering angular distributions are reported for shear and compressional incident waves. The consequences upon the signals when transmitter and receiver were interchanged are explored in a reciprocity rule.

Notes: Abstract The properties of fluctuations inμ space in or outside thermal equilibrium are obtained by solving hierarchies of equations derived either from the Liouville or the Master equation. In particular we study the one-, two-, etc., time correlation functions that describe the spatial and temporal behavior of the fluctuations inμ space. Explicit solutions are obtained for a dilute gas. The Langevin approach is briefly discussed. Our results are compared with those obtained in the extensive literature, which is reviewed in some detail.

Notes: Abstract We study in detail the two-particle cluster integral in the cluster expansion for the effective dielectric constant of a suspension of spherically symmetric polarizable inclusions embedded in a uniform medium. Although our form for the integrand differs from that derived earlier by Finkel'berg and by Jeffrey, we show that the integral is equivalent. The two-body dielectric problem for particles with an arbitrary radial dependence of the dielectric constant is solved by an expansion in spherical harmonics. Numerical results for some special models illustrate the importance of multipole contributions to the effective dielectric constant.

Notes: Abstract Employing a recently developed cluster expansion for the effective dielectric constant of a suspension of spherical inclusions, we show which parts of the cluster integrals give rise to the Clausius-Mossotti formula. The same selection of terms is then used to obtain an approximate expression for the wave-vector-dependent effective dielectric tensor. For a system of hard spheres with only dipole polarizability this expression is evaluated in closed form. This last result is then used to derive the form of the electrostatic potential due to a point charge in the effective medium. For physically reasonable values of the polarizability, the potential has asymptotically the form corresponding to a medium with the Clausius-Mossotti dielectric constant, while at short range it oscillates about this form. For values of the polarizability beyond the physical range critical points are found at which the oscillations become long range.

Notes: Abstract The kinetic theory of density and velocity fluctuations below and above the first convective instability in a Benard cell is presented. Results are given in a form valid for all fluid densities. In particular, the singular behavior near the instability point is computed and a detailed comparison with that near a critical point is made. Mode coupling effects, involving the viscous and the heat mode, that determine the singular behavior of the thermal conductivity near the critical point, are also responsible for the singular behavior of the pair correlation function and in particular the density-density correlation function near the instability point. The anomalous density fluctuations could be measured directly by microwave scattering experiments, while the velocity fluctuation could be measured by laser Doppler velocimetry.
