Notes: Summary Rabbit articular chondrocytes cultured in the presence of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF I) increased significantly the synthesis of both collagen and glycosaminoglycans. The increase in the ratio of35SO 4 2− to [3H]glucosamine observed in glycosaminoglycans synthesized in the presence of IGF I seems to indicate that IGF I affects sulphation and synthesis of these polyanionic macromolecules to a different extent.

Notes: Summary Insulin was absorbed faster from the abdomen than from the thigh under resting conditions and during exercise. Exercise enhanced the rate of insulin absorption marginally. The fall of blood glucose during rest and exercise was not significantly different after insulin injection into either site. The faster absorption of insulin from the abdomen during rest and exercise was reflected in a sharper rise of serum growth hormone levels and urinary adrenaline excretion. Therefore exercise should not be taken immediately after injection of a large dose of soluble insulin, particularly into the abdomen.

Notes: Summary A (sub)population of cells obtained from newborn rat calvaria by (sequential) collagenase digestion is grown to confluence in serum-containing medium. These cells are osteoblast-like with respect to high alkaline phosphatase activity and marked responsiveness (cAMP) to parathormone. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) enhance net incorporation of the labeled precursors thymidine, uridine, and glucose into the respective macromolecules DNA, RNA, and glycogen. Human IGF I is five times as potent as IGF II in evoking these anabolic responses in cultured rat calvaria cells. In contrast to insulin, the factors are effective in concentrations in which they are present in serum.

Notes: Summary Some twenty cases of dispermic chimeras with the karyotype 46,XX/46,XY, discovered because of gonadal dysplasias or a true hermaphroditism, have been reported. This is a report of a phenotypically normal man with 46,XX/46,XY chimerism in whom a prepubertal finding of positive X-chromatin was interpreted as Klinefelter syndrome. The diagnosis was revised 11 years later when the family doctor, who doubted the earlier diagnosis because of the patient's normal-sized testes, sent him to an outpatient clinic. The young man was 23 years old, athletic (74kg, 180cm), with normal body proportions, normal sexual hair distribution, normal libido and potency, normal endocrine parameters, and a normal spermiogram. The karyotype revealed an XX/XY mosaic in a proportion of 1:2. An identical set of maternal markers (Q- and C-banding) was present in male and female cells. Differences were found with respect to two paternal markers. Furthermore, blood, serum, and red cell enzyme groups in five systems showed two phenotypes, again with duality of paternal origin. It is concluded that a positive X-chromatin in prepuperty, especially in the absence of supporting clinical features, must be followed by a karyotype study.
