    Notizen: In Lemna gibba L. a 2 h pretreatment with the amino-acid analogue p-fluorophenylalanine p-FPA inhibited subsequent uptake of L-alanine and reduced the transient depolarization of the plasmalemma caused by L-alanine. Uptake of 3–0-methylglucose was less affected. There was no effect of p-fluorophenylalanine on the resting potential or on the fusicoccin- or light-dependent hyperpolarization of the cells. Furthermore, fusicoccin-stimulation of uptake of L-alanine and 3–0-methylglucose was also unaffected. The results suggest that p-FPA pretreatment selectively acts on the H+-amino-acid co-transport carrier, that the H+-hexose co-transport carrier is much less affected, and that the proton pump appears to be unaffected by p-FPA.

    Notizen: Uptake rates of L-alanine, L-serine and L-aspartate and trans-membrane electrical potentials (Δψ) were determined for a pH range in the external medium between 3.5 and 9.0. The proton electrochemical gradients (〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉) were calculated from Δψ, pH of the medium, and an assumed cytoplasmic pH of 7.5. At external amino-acid concentrations of 0.1 mol m−3, where carrier-mediated uptake dominates total uptake, a linear correlation between uptake rates and 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉 is obtained, which extrapolates to zero uptake at zero 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉. This corroborates the contention that neutral and acidic amino acids are taken up by Lemna gibba L. by H+-cotransport.

    Notizen: Abstract Earlier work suggested that amino acid uptake by Lemna gibba cells is a H+-cotransport mechanism driven by a proton-electrochemical gradient at the plasmalemma. The present investigations of the transient membrane depolarizations elicited by amino acids and tracer-uptake experiments show that all neutral α-L-amino acids, D-alanine and analogues, like β-alanine and p-fluorophenylalanine, are transported by the same system. It remains to be seen if there are separate mechanisms for the uptake of acidic and basic amino acids.

    Notizen: Abstract Triple differential cross sections for the ionization of helium by electrons of 500 eV impact energy have been measured in a coplanar, asymmetric geometry and for energies of the ejected electrons of 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 eV. A comparison is made between experimental data and a second Born treatment of Byron, Joachain and Piraux [1] for atomic hydrogen but for corresponding momenta of the incoming and the two outgoing electrons and for corresponding momentum transfer during the collision. The second Born describes quite well the shifts of the binary peak and the recoil peak to larger angles, the asymmetry of the recoil peak and the ratios of the intensities of binary to recoil peaks for different scattering parameters. — A quantitative estimate is made (for high impact energy) of the contributions to the total cross section of those ionizing collisions, in which the recoil peak intensity represents a considerable quantity. Probably most of these events can not be described by a single collision approximation.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Frisch bestrahlte Kernbrennstoffe werden in konz. Salpetersäure gelöst und mit dem Laufmittel Diethylether/Bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphat/ Salpetersäure (100∶3∶2) chromatographiert. Die Seltenen Erden werden nach der Trennung γ-spektroskopisch bestimmt. Bei zweidimensionaler DC-Trennung mit den Laufmitteln Di-iso-propylether/Tetrahydrofuran/Salpetersäure (100∶80∶4) im ersten und Diethylether/Bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphat/Salpetersäure (100∶4∶2) im zweiten Lauf wird eine quantitative Trennung der S.E. von allen anderen radioaktiven Spaltprodukten erreicht. Die Nachweisgrenzen wurden bestimmt und die absoluten Mengen der entstandenen S.E. berechnet. Die Trennung und Bestimmung dauert nach Lösen der Proben 60–70 min.
    Notizen: Summary Nuclear fuels of short decay times are dissolved in concentrated nitric acid and analysed by thin-layer chromatography in diethylether/bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate/nitric acid (100∶3∶2). Rare earth elements (RE) are determined after separation by γ spectroscopy. By two-dimensional thin-layer separation in di-isopropylether/THF/nitric acid (100∶80∶4) and diethylether/bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (100∶4∶2) a quantitative separation of the RE from all other fission products is achieved. Detection limits are determined and the absolute amounts of RE are estimated. Separation and detection after dissolving of the samples require 60–70 min.
