Notes: Summary The effects of isoprenaline were studied in isolated rat superior cervical ganglia. Intracellularly recorded excitatory postsynaptic potentials were depressed by isoprenaline in concentrations of 10−5 to 10−4 M. In 13 out of 17 cells, isoprenaline caused ganglionic hyperpolarization (mean, 4 mV). Changes in the amplitude and contour of antidromic action potentials caused by isoprenaline could be accounted for by the increased membrane potential. A slight increase in membrane input resistance from 44–50.2 megohms (mean values) occurred in about half of the cells. Activation of an ion pump by isoprenaline was suggested by the finding that the hyperpolarization did not occur when the bathing solution contained ouabain (10−5 M) or lacked Na+ or K+. Characterization of the isoprenaline effects by the use of alpha and beta adrenergic blocking drugs was not possible because of the direct depressant effects of the antagonists. The muscarinic agonist bethanechol (2.5×10−5 to 2.5×10−4 M) caused ganglionic depolarization and increased input membrane resistance (42–52 megohms) during depolarization in each of the cells tested. The ganglionic responses to bethanechol were prevented by atropine.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Darmstoff obtained from the bath fluid of the isolated gastro-intestinal tract of frogs was compared with prostaglandin by column and thin layer chromatography. The smooth muscle effect of this Darmstoff preparation is mainly due to its content of the prostaglandins PGE1 and PGF1. In addition another lipid component constributes weakly to the activity. Acidic phosphatides which are major biologically active constituents of lipid extracts or hot water extracts of horse intestine, are not present — or only to a small degree — in dialysates of surviving frog intestine. This suggests that in living tissue the smooth muscle contracting phosphatides are bound to cellular structures, and extractable only after disintegration of the tissue. Acidic phosphatides can, therefore, only have locally restricted functions. Polar fatty acids like prostaglandins, on the other hand, occur in a diffusible state and can be humoral transmitters, potentially.

Notes: Summary In the rabbit jejunum, the elevation of temperature within the range of 25–37°C diminished the sensitivity to noradrenaline (NA) for both the relaxation and amplitude inhibition. The relaxation by NA was mainly mediated via adrenergic β-receptors at 25, 30 or 37°C. The amplitude inhibition was mediated via α-receptors at 37°C, and both α- and β-receptors at 30 or 25°C.

Notes: Abstract Basic properties are given of the prism anamorphic expander of a Gaussian beam composed of a couple of prisms in tandem. Its shorter overall length for a given expansion, relative ease of optical adjustment, a sharp selection of polarization component, and rather small inclusive dispersion make it an excellent beam expander in a specific laser cavity. The design principle is presented of the prism system with a grating for an anastigmatic optical resonator for a dye laser of narrow linewidth and of short pulse duration.

Notes: Summary Tiaramide in 10−4 or 10−5 M depressed the ADP-induced aggregation of rabbit platelets using the turbidimetric method. In modified Chandler's loop method, tiaramide in the same concentration accelerated the restoration of the time course of disaggregation.
