Summary Investigation of the lympho-epithelial relationships in the kidney showed: (1) In normal kidneys, the number of lymphocytes migrating into the tubular epithelium is 2.7±1.3‰. (2) In acute renal failure, the lymphocytes are present in the same frequence (2.5±1.9‰). (3) The number of lymphocytes in the tubular epithelium is clearly increased in rapidly progressive and chronic proliferating and sclerosing glomerulonephritis, namely 15.1±1.7‰ (rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis) and 17.3±3.6‰ (chronic proliferating and sclerosing glomerulonephritis), respectively. (4) In the tubular epithelium the lymphocytes are found intercellularly and predominantly in infranuclear position. We think, that these possibly are immunocompetent cells, whose contact with antigenic substances could lead to immunisation or autoimmunisation of the organism. It is therefore discussed, particularly considering the findings of Dixon et al., whether these cells could absorb antigenic particles of the glomerular basement membrane found in the urine and whether an autoimmunising process could be thereby initiated.
Notes:
