Notes: [Auszug] WHILE there is a considerable fund of knowledge on the physical and chemical factors affecting the loss of available phosphate, or ‘phosphate fixation’, in soils, there is very little published work on the part played by soil micro-organisms in the process. Phosphorus can either be utilized by ...

Notes: [Auszug] AN interesting phenomenon has been recorded during an investigation in which the test for decomposable organic matter, by the determination of the amount of oxygen absorbed by N/80 potassium permanganate acidified by 25 per cent (v./v.) sulphuric acid, was employed and of which no previous ...

Notes: Abstract A technique is described for rapid and reproducible analysis of split-drop micropuncture sequences recorded on film. Automatic identification of the droplet menisci in each cine frame, and subsequent evaluation is performed by a computerised T.V. image analysis system. In comparison with a more conventional technique, the improvement in reproducibility of the analysis is achieved without loss of accuracy and is accompanied by a three fold increase in speed.

Notes: Summary Previous authours have suggested that the Type I respiratory enhancement in Chlorella was the result of an increased supply of a respiratory substrate or intermediate, or a change in activity of a respiratory enzyme. Our studies with respiratory inhibitors show that the Type I effect is not a general respiratory enhancement, as would be expected from an increase in available substrate, but rather is specifically associated with the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the electron transport chain. The feedback controls on these two processes are such that changes in activities of the component enzymes or in concentrations of carbohydrate intermediates would not be expected to affect the overall respiration rate: an ATP demand is needed to explain the results. A stimulation of chloroplast RNA and protein synthesis by blue light may be the basic mechanism.

Notes: Abstract The Eating Behavior Inventory (EBI) is a self-report instrument for assessing behaviors that have been theoretically implicated in weight loss, e.g., self-monitoring of food intake and of weight, refusing offers of food, eating at only one place, shopping from a list, eating in response to emotions. Thirty items were constructed in the form of first-person statements, e.g., “I eat in the middle of the night.” Each item was to be rated with a 5-point scale according to how often it was true for the respondent. Items were scored such that higher scores always reflected more “appropriate” (theoretically facilitative of weight control) eating patterns. Validity of individual items and total score was assessed in four studies. Twenty-six of the original items appeared valid and were retained. The resulting total score demonstrated validity in these studies and in two cross-validational comparisons. Internal consistency as measured by split-half reliability and correlations of item scores with total score was acceptable. One month test-retest reliability of item and total scores was satisfactory. Clinical and research applications of the EBI are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Mental health workers and programs in small towns become the subject of rumors. A method is suggested for the investigation of such rumors and their use for therapeutic purposes. Three rumor case histories are presented to illustrate these ideas. The function of rumors in a small town is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An ultra-high-speed camera utilizing an acousto-optic device for deflecting light rays is described. The system employs a pulsed-ruby-laser light source used in conjunction with a Cranz-Schardin-type camera thus utilizing the best features of both systems for recording a sequence of photographs. The system has been demonstrated at framing rates of up to 200,000 frames/s and has the potential for considerably faster operation. It features the capability of producing a sequence of dynamic photographs in which the time between succesive exposures can be independently varied. Thus, the frequency at which photographs are obtained can be increased during the times of greatest interest. Experimental results demonstrating these features are given.
