Notes: Abstract The level structures of the doubly odd nuclei80Br and82Br have been studied by means of the thermal neutron capture reactions79Br(n, γ)80Br and81Br(n, γ)82Br. Captureγ-ray spectra from isotopically separated targets have been measured in the approximate energy intervals 30〈E γ(keV)〈1100 with three bent crystal spectrometers installed at the Grenoble high-flux reactor. Measurements with Ge(Li) detectors covered the energy range 0.1〈E(MeV)〈8. Gamma-gamma coincidences have been taken at the research reactor FRJ-2 (Dido) at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich. The conversion-electron spectra of80Br and82Br from thermal neutron capture have been measured with the beta-spectrometer at the Grenoble high-flux reactor. Using all these data the level schemes of80Br and82Br are proposed up to 1.5 MeV. Spin assignments for the excited states below 800 keV are proposed. The level schemes are discussed in terms of shell model configurations and, as an alternative description, in terms of the Nilsson model.

Notes: Abstract For the investigation of vibrational states in odd A nuclei we have studied the level structure of239U by the238U (n thermal,γ) reaction. Various complementary measurement techniques as curved-crystal-, anti-Compton-,γ-γ coincidence- and conversion electron spectroscopy have been applied. The resulting data have been used to establish the deexcitation scheme of239U up to ∼1.3 MeV and to make spin assignments. Most of the levels are interpreted in terms of the Nilsson model. The data also indicate the presence of the Nilsson states ¦501↺¦ and ¦750¦. Three members of theΒ-vibrational band built on the ¦631↺¦ state and one member of theΒ-vibration built on the ¦622↑¦ ground state have been identified through transitions with strongE0 admixtures. The octupole vibrational state built on the ¦631↺¦ band is proposed at 815 keV.

Notes: Abstract Elastic scattering by nuclei in the range of mass numbers between 64 and 238 has been studied with monochromatic photons in the energy range between 2 and 8 MeV. These photons were provided either by a Ti(n,γ) source installed in the tangential through channel of the Grenoble high flux reactor, or by24Na and56Co sources produced by deuteron bombardment of Al or Fe at the Göttingen cyclotron. The photoexcitation of 23 nuclear levels has been observed and the decay properties and groundstate widths of the majority of these levels have been determined. For the lead scattering target the coherent elastic differential cross section has been studied in detail. There is evidence that below the photo-neutron threshold the elastic scattering via virtual photoexcitation of the nucleus can be approximated by extrapolating the real part of the Giant Dipole Resonance amplitude along a Lorentzian curve. Coulomb corrections to Delbrück scattering seem to play a small role at 6.5 MeV.

Notes: Abstract Improved neutron binding and excitation energies in205, 207, 208Pb, relative to the 412 keV gold standard, have been deduced from the measurements of gamma-ray energies following thermal neutron capture. Neutron binding energies of 6,731.57(15), 6,737.76(18), 7,367.87(11) keV for205, 207, 208Pb, respectively, were determined.

Notes: Abstract The nucleus24Na has been investigated by studying the gamma-rays emitted following thermal neutron capture in23Na, with curved crystal and Ge(Li) spectrometers. Of the 277 transitions assigned to24Na, 216 were placed in the24Na level scheme containing 45 levels, of which six (1,961, 1,977, 3,866, 5,810, 5,918, and 6,222 keV) are reported for the first time. An average gamma-ray multiplicity of 3.3 gammas per neutron capture was observed. The neutron binding energy was determined to be 6,959.73 (14) keV. The resulting level scheme is compared to shell and rotational model predictions.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray spectrum emitted following thermal neutron capture in19F has been studied with curved crystal and Ge(Li) spectrometers. From the 109 transitions assigned to20F, 85 have been placed in a level scheme containing 26 levels. An average gammaray multiplicity of 2.8 gammas per neutron capture was observed. The neutron binding energy was found to be 6601.33(14) keV. The experimental level scheme is compared to rotational model predictions. In addition it is shown that the decay of the capture state is non-statistical and that there is a strong correlation between the strengths of excitation of levels by the (n, γ) and (d, p) reactions. Calculations of the partial cross-sections using the direct capture theory of Lane and Lynn give order of magnitude agreement with experiment.

Notes: Abstract Using the181Ta(n, γ) and141Pr(n, γ) reactions to provide a dense series of intenseγ-rays, photoexcitation of the238U nucleus has been studied in the 4–7 MeV range. It is shown that most of the effective cross sections are in line with an average strength function as given by the GDR Lorentzian line superimposed by Porter-Thomas fluctuations. Resonances of nonstatistical strength are found close to 5.2 MeV.

Notes: Abstract. We have studied neutron quantum states in the potential well formed by the earth’s gravitational field and a horizontal mirror. The estimated characteristic sizes of the neutron wave functions in the two lowest quantum states correspond to expectations with an experimental accuracy. A position-sensitive neutron detector with an extra-high spatial resolution of $\sim 2 \mathrm{\mu} $ m was developed and tested for this particular experiment, to be used to measure the spatial density distribution in a standing neutron wave above a mirror for a set of some of the lowest quantum states. The present experiment can be used to set an upper limit for an additional short-range fundamental force. We studied methodological uncertainties as well as the feasibility of improving further the accuracy of this experiment.

Notes: Abstract A new method has been developed for the solution of the linearized Boltzmann equation far from thermal equilibrium. The solution has been applied to the interpretation of the slowing down of atoms with kinetic energies of a few hundreds of eV as obtained from measured γ-peak profiles, using the gamma ray induced doppler broadening (GRID) technique. From this solution, lifetimes of nuclear excited states can be extracted. These results are compared with the predictions of other models.

Notes: Abstract Primary capture gamma rays following multiple neutron capture in151Eu have been measured as a function of the irradiation time. Neutron capture cross sections of the152Eu 3− groundstate and of the152Eu 0− isomer (T 1/2=9.3h) were determined. These cross sections are relevant for the interpretation of inelastic scattering of neutrons at isomeric states with energy gain (neutron acceleration). The level scheme of153Eu has been extended. Neutron binding energies of152Eu,153Eu,153Gd and154Gd are given.
