Notes: Abstract A comparison between the equations for the respiratory heat loss by Fanger (RHLF), Abel, Baumgartner and Dohle (RHLABD), Aikas and Piironen (RHLAP) and McCutchan and Taylor (RHLMT) shows that at the same atmospheric conditions RHLABD is always greater than RHLAP, RHLMT and RHLF. The RHLABD equation does not include the energy liberated by the water vapour condensation during expiration. During the warm summer season this energy gain during expiration amounts to 28% of the energy loss during inspiration from heating and water vapour saturation of the inspired air.

Notes: Summary A review of recent investigations in the retinoid field is presented. Retinoic acid exerts a prophylactic and a therapeutic effect on chemically induced benign and malignant epithelial tumors in mice. In clinical studies positive therapeutic results have been obtained in patients with preneoplastic and neoplastic epithelial lesions. However, treatment with retinoic acid is limited by serious side effects (hypervitaminosis A syndrome). Therefore, the synthesis of analogs of retinoic acid (retinoids) possessing a more favorable therapeutic ratio has been initiated. Among a large series of synthesized compounds, certain aromatic analogs proved to have a particularly favorable therapeutic ratio. The structure-activity relationship of the most active retinoids is discussed including some biological data concerning prophylaxis and therapy of epithelial tumors. The total synthesis of retinoids according to various building schemes is discussed in detail. Methods for the synthesis of the cyclic end group, of the polyene chain component, and of the full retinoid skeleton are described. Metabolic studies of retinoic acid and of the most active retinoid, as well as the synthesis of some isolated metabolites are outlined. Suggestions concerning the mechanism of action of retinoids are made. Some clinical results on the treatment of acne, psoriasis and precancerous conditions are reported.

Notes: Abstract The O-antigen (lipopolysaccharide) of Anacystis nidulans, strain KM, has been isolated from whole cells and from cell wall preparations by phenolwater extraction. The polysaccharide moiety consists of a D-mannose polymer accompanied by smaller amounts of 3- and 4-O-methyl-D-mannoses, D-galactose, D-glucose, L-fucose, D-glucosamine, mannosamine and 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate. Aldoheptoses are lacking. The degraded polysaccharide is split from lipid A by acid hydrolysis (10% acetic acid, 100°C, 3 h) whereby 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate is released in small amounts. Degraded polysaccharide forms only one major fraction by Sephadex G-50 gel-filtration. This fraction includes all the sugars mentioned above except L-fucose, which is released during the acetic acid degradation. Periodate studies and methylation analysis revealed that the poly-mannose chain consists of about 75% 1→3 linked and of 25% 1→4 linked D-mannose units. Lipid A of A. nidulans is phosphate-free. The main fatty acid, β-hydroxypalmitic acid, is exclusively amide-bound, presumably to the amino group of D-glucosamine. Other fatty acids, found as minor constituents, are β-hydroxymyristic, palmitic and stearic acids. Lipopolysaccharide of A. nidulans KM exhibits high anticomplementary activity in guineapig serum. It is about 800 times less toxic for adrenalectomized mice than endotoxin from Salmonella typhimurium. The isolated lipopolysaccharide reacts with rabbit antisera against living or heat-killed cells of A. nidulans in passive hemagglutination, when untreated or heated, but not when alkali-treated lipopolysaccharide is used for red blood cell sensibilization. It is concluded that lipopolysaccharide of A. nidulans KM is exposed on the surface of the cell.

Notes: Abstract Based on the equation of a dampness index by Piggott the mean monthly diurnal variation of the cold feeling of man was computed from the meteorological data for the year 1972 measured in the course of the IHD and the IB P 2 m above the ground in a spruce forest near Munich, Germany. At no time the conditions in the forest fell within the range of cold. Piggott's classification of dampness and index are described in detail. Regressions of the index with windchill, equivalent temperature and mean hourly energy consumption of man are of general validity as they largely depend on ambient temperature. Correlations with other measurements such as RFH and vapor pressure are only valid for certain climates.

Notes: Abstract From data of meteorological stations in a city (Munich) and in a forest (Ebersberger Forst, near Munich) for the summer months 1972 mean monthly diurnal variations of the following parameters were computed: vapour pressure, equivalent temperature, effective temperature, energy consumption with respiration and hourly water requirement for saturation of the respiratory air. The results show that during the summer season forest air is bioclimatically more comfortable than city air for humans.

Notes: Summary From 1957 –1 977 193 patients were treated at the surgical clinic of the University of Tübingen for carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile ducts. Gall bladder carcinoma made up 139 cases; 54 were of bile duct carcinoma. The tumors were no longer operable in two-thirds of the patients with extrahepatic bile ducts cancer. The life expectancy rate of five years for patients with gall bladder carcinoma held for 7 %. Up to now only one patient with a bile duct malignancy has survived longer than five years. In the last decade essentially no improvement of median life expectancy has occurred despite improved operating techniques. Due to uncharacteristic, misleading upper abdominal symptoms, patients who suffer gall bladder or bile duct cancer are unfortunately accurately diagnosed only after the carcinoma has overcome organ borders or is already metastatic. There is reasonable hope for improved early prognosis of extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma with ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreaticography) and computer-tomography. Because the possibility of a relationship between gall bladder stones and/or the chronic inflammation of gall bladder and bile ducts and the development of cancer is not out of the question, widespread prophylactic cholecystectomy and gall passage cleansing should be employed.

Notes: Summary Four plasmids Rsc10–13 ranging in size from 5.1×106 to 13.4×106 Dalton have been isolated from a strain carrying the copy mutant R1drd-19B2 of the antibiotic resistance factor R1. The Rsc plasmids have been cloned by transformation in Escherichia coli C. They determine high level resistance to ampicillin and occur in the cell in multiple copies. Their copy number and stability in the bacterial cell depend on the plasmid and the host strain. Physical maps of these plasmids have been constructed by cleavage with restriction endonucleases HincII, EcoRI, HindIII, BamI and SmaI. The pattern of the cleavage fragments have been compared with the parent plasmid R1drd-19B2 and with a R1 deletion mutant, R1drd-16, which has lost the ampicillin resistance. For Rsc11 and Rsc10 the data indicate, that both plasmids derive from a continuous stretch of the R1drd-19B2 DNA extending from the ampicillin transposon (TnA) to the replication site of the R1 factor. The plasmids Rsc12 and 13 have lost a DNA sequence between TnA and the replication site of R1. They may be formed by translocation of TnA to different autonomously replicating fragments of R1drd-19B2 including the replication origin or by deletion of DNA sequences from Rsc10 and Rsc11.
