Notes: Abstract— Slices of cerebellum from Purkinje cell-deficient, neurologically mutant ‘nervous’ mice or normal littermates synthesized cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP during in vitro incubations. Resting levels of cyclic AMP were the same in the two groups, but accumulations in the presence of kainic acid, a glutamic acid analogue, or norepinephrine were significantly greater in the ‘nervous’ mice. Resting levels of cyclic GMP were lower in the ‘nervous’ mice, but the elevations produced by kainic acid were the same in both groups. Adenylate and guanylate cyclase activities in the cerebellum were not affected by the mutation. These findings indicate that cyclic nucleotide synthesis in the cerebellum does not occur solely in the Purkinje cell population.

Notes: Abstract Indium oxide films doped with tin (ITO-films) have been hf-sputtered from an 80 at-%In2O3/20 at-%SnO2 target onto glass substrates. The sputter atmosphere contained mainly argon (10−2Torr) with addition of oxygen (0≦p O 2≦2·10−2Torr). The sputtered films aren-conductors. The conductivity and density of charge carriers depend on the oxygen content of the sputter gas. They could be varied by two orders of magnitude. In air or in oxygen atmosphere the films oxidize at the surface and for a certain depth beneath the surface, thus decreasing the conductivity. The Hall mobility of the sputtered films is smaller (≈10 cm2V−1 s−1) than one observes at ITO films produced by CVD sparaying or other methods. The conductivity of as sputtered films approached maximum values of about 1000Ώ−1cm−1.

Notes: Summary The relationships between nerve cell-glia-complexes (NGCs) and surrounding capillaries were studied by combined cytometric-cytophotometric methods in male mice up to 60 min after injection of 70 mg/kg of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). The nuclear area in neurons from cortical layers IV and V of the motoric area 8 increased by 13%, and in neurons from the hypoglossal nucleus there was an increase of 23%, associated with phasic changes in the nuclear area of their glial satellites. The number of perfused capillaries increased in both brain regions and there was a 20%-elongation of erythrocyte-filled capillary segments. The cytoplasmic RNA content enlarged in the hypoglossal neurons but decreased in cortical neurons from area 8. Peptidergic neurons and their glial satellites (supraoptic nucleus) showed nuclear shrinkage. Fifty percent of these peptidergic neurons reacted by reduction of their cytoplasmic RNA content. The measured cell reactions seem to be specific for different groups of NGCs which were defined by their histotopography, their neuronal interconnections, and a prevalence of secretory or nonsecretory neurons.

Notes: Abstract The experiments presented here deal with the effects of the inhalation of dichlorvos [dimethyl-(2,2 dichlorvinyl)-phosphate, DDVP] vapor on acetyl-cholinesterase (ACHE) activity in rat bronchial tissue. Exposure to DDVP concentrations of 0.8 and 1.8 μg/l for 3 days reduced ACHE activity in the bronchial tissue (62.8±0.8 and 51.6±1.6% of the control), but did not elicit any changes in blood ACHE activity (101±4.5% of the control each). Higher concentrations (4.3 μg/l) induced a decline in ACHE activity also in the blood (38.2±1.1% of the control). In the histochemical preparations used to demonstrate CHE activity in bronchial tissue (thiolacetic acid method), a staining of the bronchial glands and smooth muscles characteristic of the enzyme activity was strongly reduced after exposure of the animals to even the lowest dose applied (0.2 μg/l). The question of whether localized inhibition of ACHE in the bronchial tissue might cause increases in airway resistance due to activation of a broncho-bronchial reflex is discussed. This efferent cholinergic mechanism has been found to be at least partly responsible for maintenance of bronchospasm and hypersecretion in chronic obstructive deseases of the respiratory system.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die häufigste Form der Koagulopathie bei akuter Erwachsenen-Leukämie ist eine Verminderung von Fibrin stabilisierendem Faktor (Faktor XIII).
Notes: Summary A decrease in fibrin stabilizing factor (factor XIII) is the most frequent coagulation disorder seen in adults with acute leukemia. Patients with prominent reduction of factor XIII (FSF) (〈50%) were substituted with a factor XIII concentrate from human placenta, and factor XIII plasma concentration and bleeding tendency were followed up during the course of the disease. After substitution plasma, factor XIII activity went up to normal levels in most of the patients. As compared to the course of 12 patients with distinct factor XIII reduction without factor XIII therapy, there were less bleeding complications in 13 courses of patients with prominent reduction of factor XIII substituted with factor XIII concentrate and in 11 with normal or only slightly reduced factor XIII levels.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Differences in sympathetic vascular tone between Wistar Kyoto rats (WKR) and stroke prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (spSHR) were determined by comparing the following parameters: sympathetic activity was evaluated by determinations of plasma catecholamines (noradrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine) combined with the measurement of the neuronal and extraneuronal uptake of noradrenaline using an isolated rat heart preparation. The responsiveness of vascular smooth muscle to vasopressor agents was tested in the isolated perfused hindlimb preparation. At the age of 5, 12, 15, and 28 weeks sympathetic nervous activity was significantly higher in spSHR than in WKR since plasma noradrenaline was elevated by almost 50% in the presence of an unaltered activity of the uptake mechanisms. The responsiveness of vascular smooth muscle to noradrenaline was markedly enhanced in spSHR. Besides increased maximal vasoconstriction in response to BaCl2 (20 mmol/l) after potassium chloride depolarization or supramaximal doses of noradrenaline (10−3 mol/l), a supersensitivity of vascular smooth muscle to noradrenaline could also be detected in spSHR (age 5 weeks). The threshold dose and the ED50 were reduced by 25% in spSHR in response to noradrenaline infusions. No changes in threshold or ED50 were found in response to potassium chloride depolarization. The stimulated sympathetic activity in spSHR and the increased responsiveness of resistance vessels to noradrenaline, both contribute to the rise in sympathetic vascular tone. The finding of an increased sympathetic vascular tone in very early stages of hypertension suggest that this factor, producing a primary increase in total peripheral resistance underlies the development of high blood pressure in spSHR.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 49 Patienten mit metastasiertem Bronchialcarcinom (16 kleinzellige Carcinome, 17 Plattenepithelcarcinome, 12 großzellige Carcinome, 4 Adenocarcinome) wurden mit einer Kombinationschemotherapie bestehend aus Adraimycin, Cyclophosphamid, Vincristin und DTIC behandelt.
Notes: Summary 49 patients with disseminated bronchogenic carcinoma (small cell, 16; squamous cell, 17; large cell, 12; adeno, 4) were treated with a combination of adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine and DTIC. In a randomized series (21 patients) chemotherapy alone was compared to chemotherapy plus heparin. Partial remission was achieved in 8 patients with small cell carcinoma, in 5 patients with large cell carcinoma and in 2 patients with squamous cell carcinoma. The survival of patients who responded to therapy was greater than the survival of patients who did not respond to therapy. The duration of remission and the survival time was not longer in patients who had additional heparin therapy.
