Notes: Summary Ultrastructure of the granulosa lutein cells of the raccoon from throughout pregnancy has been described. The lutein cells often from epithelial cords which are separated by the connective tissues, capillaries and lymphatics. Based on the arrangements and modifications of the cytoplasmic organelles and inclusions, three types of lutein cells have been recognized. The type I lutein cells predominantly contain tubular, agranular endoplasmic reticulum, juxtanuclear Golgi complexes, a few round to rod-shaped mitochondria, some free ribosomes, and occasional lipid droplets. Occasionally the tubular cristae of mitochondria and tubular smooth endoplasmic reticulum appear contiguous. The type II cells contain abundant lace-like and/or stacked fenestrated endoplasmic reticulum cisternae that frequently form membranous whorls, some tubular, agranular endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and lipid droplets. Mitochondria are usually small, but unusual large ones also occur. The small, rod-to round-shaped mitochondria usually have tubular cristae; but the large, oval, elongate, and cup shaped mitochondria possess tubular, lamellar, plate like, and whorl-like cristae. The plasma membranes of the cells are complexly elaborated and folded, especially when apposing each other. In favorable sections, strands of fenestrated cisternae appose the folds of the plasma membranes. In general, the amount of cytoplasmic organelles and inclusions vary greatly in the cells. The type III cells predominantly contain lipid droplets and sparse cytoplasmic organelles. The type I and II cells are found throughout pregnancy, but the type III cells are observed from mid gestation to term. The cytological features of type I and II cells suggest that they probably secrete most of the steroids, whereas the type III cells primarily store lipids.

Notes: The behavior of type-304 stainless steel in a forced-convection closed-loop lithium system was investigated over a wide range of temperatures and velocities. Fundamental information concerning the mechanism for mass transport has been obtained by examining solution and deposition effects along flat plates. The rate-determining process for solution is transport from the solid to the interface, whereas deposition rates are liquid-phase controlled.Liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients were correlated with a maximum deviation of approximately 15% by the use of von Kàrmàn's analysis of the turbulent boundary layer along a flat plate, combined with the Chilton-Colburn empirical modification of the Schmidt group. In contrast no adequate model is available for the prediction of solution rate constants which must be determined experimentally. Mean values of the solution rate constants ranged from 0.154 to 0.750 × 10-5 cm./sec. at temperatures from 510° to 612°C. These values are on the order of 103 smaller than corresponding liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients.

Notes: Forced convection mass transfer between circular tubes and liquid lithium was experimentally investigated over a range of Schmidt numbers from 40 to 57 and Reynolds numbers from 5,550 to 22,500. Information concerning the mechanism for mass transfer was obtained by measuring local solution and deposition rates as a function of distance along the tubes. Observed entrance effects for the solution process suggest that it involves the parallel mechanisms of diffusion through a solid film and through occluded liquid in grain boundaries. It is indicated that the relative contributions of these processes changes with increasing temperature.A j-factor correlation of existing liquid metal mass transfer data for fully developed conditions in circular conduits is presented and indicates that an exponent of 0.112 for NRe best represents the data. This result agrees well with other studies (9).

Notes: An azurin, a small respiratory copper protein from the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G, has been studied by mass spectrometry to determine sequence information. The study of homologously related proteins by mass spectiometry is particularly attractive, since the correct nature of major parts of the deduced sequences can be confirmed by comparison with the sequences of the protein from related organisms. An oxidized tryptohan residue has been identified amongst the products from a cyanogen bromide digest of this wild type azurin. In the same digest, a product is also found to arise from cleavage of the peptide chain at the C-terminal side of the same tryptophan residue. These results are rationalized.

Notes: The effect of changes in crystallinity on the β-transition in poly(vinyl chloride) was studied by dynamic mechanical measurements of loss tangent (tan δ) and storage modulus (E′) over the temperature range -160° to 85°C. Four frequencies were covered, 3.5, 11, 35, and 110 Hz. The data presented demonstrate that crystallinity has a significant influence on the relaxation processes involved in the β-transition. The restrictions on segmental mobility imposed by crystallinity are most pronounced in the region between Tβ and Tg, with Tβ tending to shift to lower temperatures, Tg shifting to slightly higher temperatures, the magnitude of tan δ decreasing, and engineering tensile strength increasing. Our data also show that individual PVC resins have mechanical and physical properties which differ enough so that comparisons which are often made between them may be inconclusive. Moreover, the properties of one resin may be more sensitive to thermal treatment than those of another. We are continuing this study to establish correlations between the observed trends and other important mechanical properties such as impact strength, toughness, tensile, and compressive strength.

Notes: Cast linear polyethylene films subjected to dry and solvent annealing display markedly different sorption and difusion barrier properties than do untreated films. The subsequent sorption of liquid o- and p-xylene and cis- and trans-acetylene dichloride per unit volume of amorphous polymer increases as the annealing temperature and/or treating solvent concentration increases. Integral diffusivities calculated from sorption and steady-state permeation rates show a monotonic increase with sorption per unit volume of amorphous polymer. The concentration dependence, however, is less marked than observed in similar systems at low permeant activity. Apparently the above treatment reduces the effective crosslinking imposed by the crystallites on the amorphous polymer chains through disentangling and incorporating some of these chains into crystallites. Thus the polymer is capable of a greater degree of swelling when brought into contact with a compatible liquid in a spite of a higher degree of crystallinity. The low concentration dependence of the diffusivities is probably due to heterogeneous distribution of excess permeant in a treated film. If the excess permeant were preferentially sorbed in regions of low polymer concentration then the above observations could be explained. Long-duration, osmotic stress-induced swelling and recrystallization have been cited to account for time-dependent permeation rates in treated and untreated films.

Notes: Viscoelastic properties of the BBL ladder polymer were determined by a dynamic mechanical technique for the temperature range -150°C to 250°C and at frequencies of 3.5, 11, and 110 Hz. A secondary loss dispersion centered at -50°C (at 110 Hz) was discovered which probably arises from an in-chain relaxation mechanism. The loss dispersion resembles β-transitions found in more conventional polymers in intensity (maximum tan δ = 0.035), activation energy( E = 19,000 cal/mole), and in its close relation to the high-temperature mechanical properties of the polymers. Only slight changes in the low-temperature loss peak cause significant increases in brittleness. It is proposed that such changes, produced by a variety of environments, result from random chain scission at imperfection points in the ladder structure. For this reason we conclude that improving the environmental stability of BBL is of prime importance in its further development for specific applications.

Notes: N-Acetyl, N-butyryl, N-stearyl, N-benzoyl, N-4-methoxybenzoyl, and N-4-nitrobenzoyl caprolactams were prepared and used as cocatalysts for the anionic polymerization of caprolactam. The results of these studies indicate that all of the cocatalysts used, except N-acetylcaprolactam, exert a steric effect which lowers both the rate and degree of polymerization. The N-benzoyl derivative appeared to be a slightly better cocatalyst than the N-4-methoxybenzoyl derivative. This may be due to the fact that the N-benzoyl group is the more electron-attracting group. N-4-Nitrobenzoylcaprolactam was unstable under the reaction conditions employed.
