Notes: Summary Anaesthesia of swine (Sus scrofa domestica) and its breeding varieties (miniature pig) is of increasing importance for research. Endotracheal intubation is particularly difficult because of unusual proportions of the whole skull, above all, of the pharynx. On account of the deviant, stumpy shape of its skull, only the Vietnamese swine (Sus scrofa “familiaris”) can be intubated by means of an instrumentarium as used in man. A special set of intubation instruments facilitates the endotracheal intubation of the common pig (Sus scrofa domestica). The method of intubation, performance of anaesthesia and possible complications are described.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Berichtet wird über den ungewöhnlichen Verlauf eines Morbus Whipple.
Notes: Summary An unusual course of Whipple's disease is reported. All clinical symptoms disappear with antibiotic therapy. Multiple control biopsies show a high grade and progressive collagen formation of the stratum proprium mucosae which takes places especially in the pericellular region and near the epithelial basal membrane. The number of lymphocytes, plasma cells and interepithelial lymphoid round cells is increased considerably. Immunologically the serum complement (C3-fraction) is decreased. Immunohistologically subepithelially and interepithelialy situated cells are found after incubation with the patients serum showing a cellular-cytoplasmatic fluorescence with anti-complement. These findings are discussed as a hyperreactive mechanism possibly leading to induction of a cellular immune process.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Weibliche Sprague-Dawley-Ratten wurden vom 1.–14.
Notes: Summary By pretreatment of female Sprague-Dawley-rats with HCG from 1st to 14th day of life and a single injection of 50 μg testerone propionate (TP) on day 15th it was possible to suppress the development of a normal sexual cycle and produce a state of persistant vaginal cornification with polycystic ovaries without corpora lutea in all rats. Treatment with HCG alone or injection of TP at the 15th day of life without HCG-pretreatment did not prevent a normal sexual development in all animals. A direct inhibitory effect of HCG on the differentiation of the sexual center or an indirect one by a low production of hormones from the ovaries stimulated by HCG is discussed.

Notes: Summary Sex human ovaries with graafian follicles were perfused in a closed circulatory system, in vitro, with 100% synthetic hemoglobin-free medium. The oxygen uptake of the ovaries was determined and after the close of the perfusion another, determination followed: the concentration of ATP, ADP, glucose, pyruvate and lactate in the tissue. Changes in the level of glucose, pyruvate and lactate were ascertained additionally in the perfusion medium during its three hour circulation. The results were discussed and compared with the values from perfused bovine ovaries. The critical evaluation of the measurements confirms, that for a period of 3–4 hours, an energy metabolism which can be considered equivalent to its physiological counterpart is able to be maintained.

Notes: Summary An in vitro ovulation could be induced and observed in four human ovaries with Graafian follicle. Perfusion was carried out by means of a semi-synthetic medium which was free from haemoglobin in a closed recirculating system. During the stimulation by means of HCG/HMG (after the II. IRP a total of 22.9 I.U. LH/ml and 3 I.U. FSH/ml) an activation of respiration and glycolysis by a factor of 2–3up to the rupture of the follicle was observed. In this process 93% of the energy were released by the oxydative reduction of glucose and only about 7% by anaerobic glycolysis. 60–90 minutes before the rupture of the follicle an undulatory rise in the arterial hydrostatic pressure of up to 40 mmHg over the initial values was observed, although the outward conditions of perfusion were not altered, after the rupture a pressure drop to standard values. Apart from minor oscillations there was no increase in the intrafollicular pressure in spite of an increase in volume of the follicle, but only a decrease in pressure after the rupture of the follicle.
