    Description / Table of Contents: To perform copolymerizations with acrylonitrile, a large number of new monomers was produced having an H2C=C(R)—CO group or an H2C=C(CH3)—C6H4 group on the one hand and a tertiary amino group, a pyridyl radical, a carboxylic acid hydrazide group CO—NH—NRR′, an oxalic acid hydrazide group CO—CO—NH—NRR′, or an semicarbazide group NH—CO—NH—NRR′ on the other hand. Some of these compounds were converted by reaction with dimethyl sulphate, p-toluene sulphonic acid methylester or cyclic sultones into the corresponding quaternary ammonium salts or sulphobetaines. By copolymerization of these monomers with acrylonitrile, copolymers with improved dyeability and increased water absorption were obtained.
    Notes: Zur Copolymerisation mit Acrylnitril wurden neue Monomere mit einer H2C=C(R)—CO—bzw. H2C=C(CH3)—C6H4-Gruppe einerseits und einer tertiären Amino-Gruppe, einem Pyridyl-Rest, einer Carbonsäure-hydrazid-Gruppe —CO—NH—NRR′, einer Oxalsäure-hydrazid-Gruppe —CO—CO—NH—NRR′ oder einer Semicarbazid-Gruppe —NH—CO—NH—NRR′ andererseits hergestellt. Ein Teil dieser Verbindungen wurde durch Umsetzung mit Dimethylsulfat, p-Toluolsulfonsäuremethylester oder cyclischen Sultonen in entsprechende quartäre Ammoniumsalze bzw. Sulfobetaine überführt. Durch Copolymerisation dieser Monomeren mit Acrylnitril wurden Copolymere mit verbesserter Anfärbbarkeit und erhöhter Wasseraufnahme erhalten.

    Notes: Minute amounts of white or brown adipose tissue can be localized in situ within seconds by covering the organ surfaces with an alkaline solution of dithizon (diphenylthiocarbazone) in alcohol and water. The adipose tissues stain deep green, while the other organs remain unstained, or appear in various shades of pink and red. This technique has been successfully applied to various groups of vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes), and it works in fresh, in deep frozen and in formalin-fixed specimens. It fails after tissue fixation in mercuric chloride-containing fluids. In vitro studies show that the staining reaction is due to (1) a preferential solubility of small amounts of dithizon in adipose tissue lipids, and (2) the development of a green color, which appears when dithizon dissolves in lipids or organic solvents.

    Description / Table of Contents: The polymerisation of acrylonitrile-methylacrylate in the presence of polyalkylene-glycolsulphoalkylethers and β-alkenyloxy-polyalkylene glycolsulphoalkylethers in an aqueous solution with the addition of redox catalysts was examined. The polymerisation yields acrylonitrile polymers which can be dyed with basic dyestuffs.Acrylonitrile polymers which can easily be dyed with acid dyestuffs are obtainable by polymerisation of the monomers in the presence of basic imides or tertiary nitrogen atom-containing polyurethanes, polyamides, polyethers or derivatives thereof which are quaternised with dimethylsulphate.The reactivity of these prepolymers is substantially increased by incorporation of unsaturated groups (allyl or methacryloylsubstituents) as can be shown with polyethers.
    Notes: Die Polymerisation von Acrylnitril-Methylacrylat in Gegenwart von Polyalkylenglykosulfoalkyläthern und β-Alkenyloxy-polyalkylenglykosulfoalkyläthern in wäßriger Lösung unter Verwendung von Redoxkatalysatoren wurde untersucht. Es konnten dabei Acrylnitrilpolymerisate erhalten werden, die sich mit basischen Farbstoffen anfärben lassen.Mit sauren Farbstoffen gut anfärbbare Acrylnitrilpolymerisate lassen sich durch Polymerisation der Monomeren in Anwesenheit von basischen Imiden oder auch tertiäre Stickstoffatome aufweisenden Polyurethanen, Polyamiden, Polyäthern bzw, deren mit Dimethylsulfat quaternierten Derivaten erhalten.Dabei wird die Reaktivität dieser Präpolymeren durch Einführung ungesättigter Gruppierungen (Allyl- oder Methacryloylsubstituent) wesentlich erhöht, wie sich bei Polyäthern zeigen läßt.

    Notes: Die Quellung einer Ionenaustauscher-Membran in Abhängigkeit von der Konzentration der sie umgebenden Lösung wurde zur Konstruktion von Konzentrationsmeßfühlern und Schaltern, die z. B. die Elektrolyt-Konzentrationen von Brennstoffzellen messen können, ausgenutzt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen der relativen Längenänderung des untersuchten Kationenaustauscher-Membranstreifens in Schwefelsäure und dem Molenbruch des Wassers kann durch eine Exponentialfunktion wiedergegeben werden. Die Einstellgeschwindigkeit ist in Schwefelsäure größer als in Kalilauge, was auf die unterschiedliche Beweglichkeit des Kations zurückgeführt wird. Die Temperaturabhängigkeit der Längenänderung ist gering.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sterochemistry of Ephedrine-like Compounds.  -  Absolute Configuration of the Four Isomeric cis- and trans-6-Amino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenols-(5)Maintaining its absolute configuration, (+)-(S)-glutaminic acid is converted to (+)-(6S)-6-phthalimido-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenone-(5) (6a), which is also synthesized from (-)-(5R,6S)- or (+)-(5S,6S)-6-amino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenol-(5) (1a or b) under retention. The same mechanism is valid in the preparation of (-)-(6R)-6-phthalimido-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenone-(5) (6b) from (-)-(5R,6R)-6-amino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenol-(5) (1c).  -  The absolute configurations of all the four isomeric 6-amino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenols-(5) (1a-d) are thus unambiguously determined.
    Notes: (+)-(S)-Glutaminsäure wird unter Erhaltung ihrer absoluten Konfiguration in (+)-(6S)-6-Phthalimido-6.7.8.9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenon-(5) (6a) umgewandelt, das seinerseits ebenfalls unter Retention aus (-)-(5R.6S)- oder (+)-(5S.6S)-6-Amino-6.7.8.9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenol-(5) (1a bzw. b) herstellbar ist. Entsprechendes gilt für die aus (-)-(5R.6R)-6-Amino-6.7.8.9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenol-(5) (1c).  -  Damit sind die absoluten Konfigurationen aller vier isomeren 6-Amino-6.7.8.9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptenole-(5) (1a-d) eindeutig festgelegt.

    Notes: Liebhafsky and Zemany proposed two terms in X-ray emission analysis: one is the linear thickness of a specimen below which the absorption effect vanishes; the other is the critical thickness of a specimen above which the specimen becomes infinitely thick. The criteria for these two terms are defined here in quantitative terms. A procedure for making thin films of closely controlled thickness is described. The sample is dispersed into a film-forming polymer solution which contains an internal standard element. A thin film is made of this suspensoid by a film applicator. The internal standard element is used to correct for variation in actual film thickness. A single calibration curve can be used for samples of different matrices. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this thin-film method in eliminating matrix effects.
