Notes: Summary Completely isolatedAplysia pacemaker neurons were used to investigate mechanisms of endogenous electrical rhythmicity. This preparation allows the study of pure pacemaker activity free from synaptic, ephaptic and/or humoral influences from the surrounding cells. The effect of some substances quite different in their mode of biochemical action were tested: sodium iodoacetate, phloridzin, dinitrophenol, heavy water, and ouabain. Each of these substances suppressed the spontaneous spike activity without any marked depolarizing or hyperpolarizing effect. Spontaneous spike activity of the neurons silenced after addition of one of these substances reappeared after addition of glucose. The restoring effect of glucose failed in beating pacemaker neurons silenced by ouabain, but is present in ouabain silenced pacemaker cells of the oscillatory type. It is suggested that two basic biochemical processes: glycolysis and ATP hydrolysis are involved in the rhythmogenesis. The results offer some hints that the spike rhythms of pacemaker neurons depend on a certain balance between glycolytic processes and ATP hydrolysis.

Notes: Abstract The purified Mo-Fe protein and Fe protein of nitrogenase from Azotobacter vinelandii have molecular weights (MW) of about 216000 and 64000, respectively. The Mo-Fe protein is composed of subunits of about 56000 MW, and the Fe protein has 2 equivalent subunits of about 33000 MW. The isoelectric point of the Mo-Fe protein is 5.2 and that of the Fe protein is 4.7. Amino acid compositions reflect the acidic nature of the proteins. The Mo-Fe protein yielded 24 atoms of Fe, 20 atoms of acid-labile sulfide and 1.54 atoms of Mo per molecule. Analysis of the Fe protein showed 3.45 atoms of Fe per molecule.

Notes: Abstract Fifty one young mice from 6 litters and 17 young rabbits from 3 litters at different ages were used for determining their functional maturation of the altitude convulsion mechanism. It was found that none of the 1 to 9-day-old mice exhibited convulsion when they were subjected to severe hypoxia. The frequency of altitude convulsions at ages of 10, 11, 12 and 13 days was 9%, 53%, 71% and 100% respectively. On the other hand, altitude convulsion was observed in 2 of 6 19-day-old (33%), 5 of 8 21-day-old (63%), 5 of 6 23-day-old (83%) and all of 24-day-old rabbits (100%). The average functional maturation period of the altitude convulsion mechanism in young mice and rabbits was shown to be 12 and 22 days of age respectively. It is clear that such a mechanism matures at different rates in different species.

Notes: Abstract The effect of long-term intermittent exposures to hypoxia corresponding to a simulated altitude of 18000 ft on gastric emptying time was studied roentgenologically under normal oxygen tension. It was found that if the male rats were exposed to hypoxia for 3 h each day for 60 days there was a marked decrease in gastric emptying time to an average of 0.86 h, as compared to 1.29 h in the control group. The difference was statistically significant. The possible mechanism of such an acceleration of gastric motility was discussed.

Notes: Abstract It is well-known that the Nash equilibrium solution of a two-person, nonzero-sum, linear differential game with a quadratic cost function can be expressed in terms of the solution of coupled generalized Riccati-type matrix differential equations. For high-order games, the numerical determination of the solution of the nonlinear coupled equations may be difficult or even impossible when the application dictates the use of small-memory computers. In this paper, a series solution is suggested by means of a parameter imbedding method. Instead of solving a high-order matrix-Riccati equation, a lower-order matrix-Riccati equation corresponding to a zero-sum game is solved. In addition, lower-order linear equations have to be solved. These solutions to lower-order equations are the coefficients of the series solution for the nonzero-sum game. Cost functions corresponding to truncated solutions are compared with those for exact Nash equilibrium solutions.

Notes: The permeation properties of formalized poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes are described. The interest of this work is centered on the properties relevant to desalination by reverse osmosis. These membranes, when properly prepared, showed reasonably high water permeability, high salt rejection, and stability in the presence of acids and alkalies.

Notes: A system of synthesis of polyether-based urethanes was developed which had sufficient flexibility in composition so that transport properties could be optimized. Mixtures of poly(oxyethylene) glycol (PEG) and poly(oxypropylene) glycol (PPG) of a variety of molecular weights were tied together by varying amounts of kinds of “hard segments.” Thus, the water swell, the mechanical properties, and the size of the soft blocks and hard blocks could be varied. With a fixed content of hard segments, the water absorption decreased with decrease in the PEG/PPG ratio, demonstrating the feasibility of producing controlled changes in hydrophilicity of the polymer without significant change in the mechanical strength. Some polyurethanes based on PEG 600 and PPG 425 had a very good high value of Pw/Ps but a somewhat low value of Pw. The polyurethanes prepared by using phenylenediamines as chain extenders had markedly enhanced modulus and an extended rubbery plateau region, as anticipated.

Notes: A series of poly(vinyl formal) membranes was synthesized by formalization of poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes. Representative pieces were selected for this study. Some cellulose acetate membranes cast from dioxane were used for comparison. The main experimental techniques employed included water absorption measurements and direct osmosis measurements. Aqueous solutions of sodium chloride at various concentrations were used for the studies of permeation through the membranes by direct osmosis. The plot of water permeability coefficient Pw versus volume fraction Vw of water absorbed in a membrane was interpreted in terms of the effect of two different types of absorbed water molecules. The individual diffusion coefficients were evaluated from asymptotic slopes of the curves. Similar analyses applied satisfactorily to data found in the literature.
