Notes: Abstract 154Ho was studied via141Pr(16O,3n) reaction at beam energy of 75 MeV. We found two new rotationally aligned bands made of neutron h9/2 and f7/2 orbitals coupled to a proton h11/2 orbital. As with several new high-spin states, up to I=20, the ground state band with odd parity starts to show anomalous signature splitting at I=13 in this doubly odd154Ho. The observed rotational bands in154Ho are quite consistent with the onset of collectivity which appears in general at neutron number of 87 in neutron-deficient rare-earth nuclei.

Notes: Abstract High spin states in the nucleus156Ho have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction140Ce(19F,3nγ)156Ho at the beam energy of 82 MeV.γ-γ coincidences, Eγ, Iγ and excitation functions have been measured. With two rotationally-aligned bands identified as π[h11/2]ν [i13/2], we found two new bands with a signature splitting, whose structure is believed to arise from either ν[h9/2] or ν[f7/2] coupled to π[h11/2]. Our placement of γ rays belonging to these new bands suggests that the previously known level scheme should be corrected. We also found many new low-energy γ rays in the low excitation energy. As compared to154Ho, the present nucleus with two more neutrons becomes more collective, and shows well-observed rotationally-aligned bands with a clear signature splitting.

Notes: Abstract By means of photoacoustic spectroscopy it has been possible to detect U(IV) and U(VI) in aqueous solution in the 10−6 M/L range. Piezoelectric transducer detection, pulsed laser radiation and a differential method to reduce solvent and window absorption has been used. Photoacoustic spectroscopy seems to be a suitable method for the low level detection of actinide elements.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation-state specific detection of actinide ions, U(VI), Pu(IV), Pu(VI), and Am(III), was investigated by pulsed laser photoacoustic spectroscopy. With a single-beam differential technique, the solvent effect is compensated and thus the detection sensitivity substantially increased. The observed detection sensitivities are 8×10−7M/L for U(VI) 7×10−8M/L for Pu(IV) 3×10−8M/L for PU(VI) 2×10−8M/L for Am(III) The present method facilitates the study of complexation and polymerization of actinide ions in the submicromole concentration range.

Notes: Abstract High spin states of118Xe have been investigated by means of γ ray spectroscopy using the92Mo(29Si,2pn) at a bombarding energy of 110 MeV. Several new side bands as well as the yrast band were established. A band crossing between the ground state and super bands was observed at ħωc = 0.39 MeV. A negative parity band with two quasi particle excitation, and a quasi γ band were also identified.

Notes: Abstract High spin states in115Te have been studied using the89Y (29Si, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 108 MeV.γ-γ coincidence, Eγ, Iγ and excitation functions have been measured. The level scheme has been extended to 82 MeV excitation energy relative to the 11/2 state and several new states are established. The systematical behaviour in odd- N Te isotopes is discussed.

Notes: A simple and efficient three-noded mixed harmonic axisymmetric element for shells of revolution under non-symmetric loading is developed. The present element considering shear strain is based on a modified mixed variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities prescribable at the shell edges. The non-symmetric variations of the displacements and stress resultants in the circumferential direction are decomposed in terms of Fourier series. The stress resultants are eliminated on the element level so that the standard stiffness equations are obtained. The importance of consistent stress parameters is addressed and the efficiency of the present consistent mixed element is shown. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The acrosome reaction induced by the zona pellucida in mouse sperm has been shown to proceed in two stages experimentally distinguishable by the fluorescent probe chlortetracycline. Entry into the first stage of sperm bound to isolated, structurally intact zonae pellucidae is blocked by the compound 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate. In this study, we show, utilizing the fluorescent Ca2+ indicator fluo-3, that the first stage of the zona-induced acrosome reaction is characterized by an increase in intracellular Ca2+, followed by a decrease as the acrosome reaction proceeds. This calcium transient is completely suppressed by 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate. We conclude that the Ca2+ transient is induced by the zona pellucida and is required for the zona-induced acrosome reaction. Blockage of this sperm intracellular Ca2+ transient provides a mechanism for the inhibitory action of 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate on the zona-induced acrosome reaction in mouse sperm. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: An efficient, perhaps simplest, three-noded mixed finite element is proposed for axisymmetric shell analysis. The key feature in the present formulation is to start with a better variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities that can be prescribed at the shell edges. If the consistency for field approximations is satisfied, no other numerical consideration is necessary in the present element. Several examples confirm the satisfactory numerical behaviour of the present mixed element.

Notes: An assumed strain finite element formulation with a stabilization matrix is developed for analysis of geometrically non-linear problems of isotropic and laminated composite shells. The present formulation utilizes the degenerate solid shell concept and assumes an independent strain as well as displacement. The assumed independent strain field is divided into a lower order part and a higher order part. Subsequently, the lower order part is set equal to the displacement-dependent strain evaluated at the lower order integration points and the remaining higher order part leads to a stabilization matrix. The strains and the determinant of the Jacobian matrix are assumed to vary linearly in the thickness direction. This assumption allows analytical integration through thickness, independent of the number of plies. A nine-node element with a judiciously chosen set of higher order assumed strain field is developed. Numerical tests involving isotropic and composite shells undergoing large deflections demonstrate the validity of the present formulation.
