Notes: Summary A 32-year-old, HIV-positive homosexual with Kaposi's sarcoma was given subcutaneous interferon-A (IFN) for two- and a-half months. The patient complained of ocular symptoms (ptosis of the left eyelid and intermittent diplopia) after the application of IFN-A. These symptoms persisted for the period of treatment and subsided after therapy was stopped. However after IFN-A was resumed, ptosis and diplopia recurred. Intensive serological and neurological diagnostic investigations failed to present any reason for these ocular symptoms. From data and the clinical appearance we suppose that in this case the patient suffered a pseudo-myasthenic reaction to IFN-A.

Notes: Summary Treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms with AZT (Azidothymidine) seems to be effective in many AIDS patients. In earlier studies, 204 of 525 patients treated with AZT showed neuropsychiatric improvement. In this presentation, two patients with affective disorder and dementia are described. Both patients showed remarkable improvement of their severe psychiatric symptoms after AZT. The authors recommend treatment of AIDS-associated dementia and psychoorganic symptoms with AZT.

Notes: Summary We report the case of a 49-year-old patient with progressive sensomotor polyneuropathy who developed nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after 21/2 months of azathioprine therapy. Administration of the drug was interrupted. These symptoms recurred immediately after rechallenge with azathioprine. A duodenal biopsy demonstrated a massive local eosiniphilia without peripheral blood eosinophilia. Cutane testing with azathioprine showed a positive type 1 reaction. We diagnosed a hypersensitive reaction type 1 in the duodenal mucosa on the basis of the histological features, the history, and the cutane reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Boryl-coupled Cyclotri- and -tetrasilazanes and four-membered Cycloborasilazanes - Thermal Decomposition to SiC and BNDilithiated octamethylcyclotetrasilazane reacts with a difluoroboryl substituted cyclotrisilazane to give the BF coupled 6-8-6-membered cyclosilazane 1, with Me2SiHCl structural isomeric cyclotetra- and cyclotrisilazanes of the type I and II, and with Me3SiCl structural isomeric cyclodisilazanes of the type III and IV are formed. The dilithium derivatives of the cyclosilazanes I and II as well as III and IV react with BF3 and a BF2-substituted cyclotrisilazane to give four-membered cyclo-borasilazanes which are coupled with a cyclodisilazane via a SiMe2-group (2-4). The six-membered cycloborasilazane 5 is a byproduct in the reaction with BF3. The reaction mechanisms are discussed. The pyrolysis with formation of SiC and BN and a crystal structure analysis were carried out with 1.

Description / Table of Contents: Crystal and Molecular Structures of (Me2SiNCN)4 (1) and Me3SiNCNSiMe3 (2)Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization (NMR, IR, Raman and MS) and crystal structure of the novel compound 1 are described. The molecules form almost planar 16 membered rings with four SiMe2-groups connected to four NCN groups. The corresponding compound 2 exhibits a phase transition from the HT phase 2a to the LT phase 2b at 131 K. Consecutive X-ray structure determinations of the molecular structures of both modifications were performed on a crystal, grown in situ on the diffractometer at 231 K.

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclosilazanes as Precursors of Si3N4-CeramicsThe products obtained in the reaction of 1-trimethylsilyl-2,2,4,4,6,6-hexamethylcyclotrisilazane 1 with butyllithium and fluorosilanes depend on the reaction conditions.Lithiated 1 reacts with SiF3N(SiMe3)2 at low temperatures to give the mono- and disubstituted compounds (2, 3) and the 1,3,5,7-tetraaza-2,4,6,8-tetrasilabicyclo-[4.2.0] octane 4. The permethylated bicyclus 5 is formed in the analogous reaction with MeSiF2N(SiMe3)2. At room temperature the monolithium salt of 1 reacts with SiF3N(SiMe3)2 to give the cyclodisilazane 6. 6 forms with butyllithium the lithium derivate 7. 7 reacts with SiF3N(SiMe3)2 to give 8, an isomeric cyclodisilazane of 3. In the reaction of lithiated 1 with Me2SiF2 the silylcoupled cyclodisilazane 9 is obtained, which is a suitable precursor of Si3N4 ceramics. The results of the crystal structure determination of 7 and the results of the pyrolysis of 9 are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: Amine-Boranes as Precursors for Boron CarbonitrideAmine-Boranes have been investigated with respect to their thermal decomposition in the temperature range from rom temperature to 1050°C. The phase transformation of the pyrolytic residue derived from BH3 · C5H5N subsequently heat-treated at temperatures up to 2200°C was studied. The progress of the pyrolysis has been detected by thermal analysis (TGA) and mass spectroscopy. Chemical analysis and ESCA measurements show that the pyrolytic products are single-phase boron carbonitride (BxCyNz) which can be described as a boron and nitrogen containing pyrolytic carbon. This is also supported by means of analytical electron microscopy. Hot pressing of the pyridine-borane-derived BxCyNz at 1800°C and a pressure of 190 MPa yields whiskerlike crystals whose d-values are in accordance with that of BN and/or graphite.
