Notes: Abstract From 1983 to 1990, 82 knee arthroscopies (8.2%) carried out in our patients found nothing pathological. Sixty-four percent of these patients were active in sports, but trauma was noted in 32% of the cases only. Football and other ball games, skiing, and track and field athletics were the main causes. Twenty-six percent of the patients had undergone previous surgery in the affected knee. At a mean of 4.6 years postoperatively, clinical and radiological re-assessment was conducted so as to compare our pre- and intraoperative findings with the further course of events. We found that 48.2% of the patients were symptom-free after the diagnostic arthroscopy, 37.5% had persistent discomfort and 14.3% had a recurrence of discomfort after 6 months to 2 years. The objective measurement score (Zarins Rowe score), at 47.5 out of 50 points, was better than the subjective score, at 40 out of 50 points. Our diagnoses had to be changed retrospectively: meniscal lesions were diagnosed too frequently, while chondropathia patellae and instability were often missed. Additionally, complaints could be related to abnormal axis, limited range of motion of the hip or knee, leg length inequality and hypermobility. Being unable to verify a presumed intra-articular lesion arthroscopically is frustrating for both doctor and patient. Our data suggest that meniscal signs should be looked at more critically and emphasise the need for a complete evaluation of the whole locomotor system.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of pyridoxyl-amino acids and their separation by liquid chromatography is described. The determination of the compounds in the eluate can be performed optically via the UV- or fluorescence spectra or radiochemically by activity measurement when radioactive NaBT4 is used in the preparation. The latter method is the most sensitive one. Sensitivity can be increased up 10−13 Mol (error ± 5%). The procedure described can also be applied to the separation and determination ofα-keto acids.

Description / Table of Contents: On Light Induced Redox Reactions of Mono-oxalate-bis(phenanthroline) Cobalt(III) Complexes in Solid StatePhoto redox reactions on complexes of the type [Co(phen)2ox]X · n H2O (phen = 1,10 phenanthroline, ox = C2O4-; X- = F, Cl, Rr, I, HCOO, C3H7COO, ClO4; n = 1-3) are discussed. They are initiated from irradiations in the 350 nm region. Thin layers of the compounds and KBr pellets of the complexes were photolyzed and quantum yield values were determined by IR-spectroscopic or analytical determination of concentration. Quantum yield values were found to be dependent on different anions X in the second coordination sphere. The brutto reactions mere characterized analytically and by spectroscopic methods and magnetic measurements. The products of photolysis were identified. A mechanism of light induced reactions is proposed on base of stoichiometry of the reactions and of identification of oxalate anion radicals by EPR.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of Non-coordinated Anions on Thermal Behaviour of Mono-oxalato-bis-phenanthroline-cobalt (III) ComplexesThe thermal redox reactions of coordination compounds from type [Co(phen)2ox]X · nH2O (phen = 1.10-phenanthroline; ox = oxalate; X- = F, CI, Br, J, HSO4, SCN, OCN, NO3, CIO4, RCOO; n = 1-4) were studied by thermomagnetic, thermogravimetric and DSC methods. The results show dependence of the thermal stability of these mixed-ligand complexes on various anions X in the second coordination sphere. From results of thermal composition the complexes investigated can be ordered in view of their different thermal stability. The stoichiometry for several complexes has been examined on basis of their gaseous and solid products and reasons for anion depending behaviours are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: On Bis(phenanthroline) cobalt(II) ComplexesSpectrophotometric investigations of [Co(phen)2X2] complexes in the IR and UV/VIS region are described. The results of this investigations show cis octahedral arrangement of the ligands. From the v1- and v3-transitions of the electronic spectra the LF parameters B and Dq are calculated and from this the two electron transition v2 is estimated. [Co(phen)2X2] complexes show symmetry equilibria between octahedral and tetrahedral forms in solutions by reason of complex disproportionation reactions. The green form of the chloride complex could be isolated and identificated as [Co(phen)Cl2].
