Notes: Summary The phonon energy spectra of a polycrystalline α-Fe foil were observed at 150 K and 300 K by using the nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation. In each spectrum, inelastic scattering was observed at both sides of the elastic peak. It was found that the ratio of the elastic-scattering component and the asymmetry of the intensity of the side bands observed at 150 K are larger than those observed at 300 K, respectively. The observed temperature-dependent spectra are in good agreement with the spectra calculated from the phonon energy distribution function. One of the advantageous features of this method is that the excitation of only a specific element is possible. Our results show that this method is applicable to the study of lattice dynamics and opens a new field of the nuclear resonant scattering spectroscopy.

Notes: Summary The results of low-temperature magnetic-relaxation experiments in TlBaCaCuO superconductors (2212 and 2223 phase) are reported. They give evidence of a crossover from a thermally activated regime of flux motion to a nonthermally activated one. The magnetic-relaxation rate is found to become temperature independent below ≅7K and ≅3K, for the 2212 and 2223 phase, respectively. Its value compares well with that predicted by the theories of flux motion by quantum tunnelling.

Notes: An N-terminal proteolytic processing product of chromogranin A was obtained from bovine chromaffin granules using two steps of C18 solid-phase extraction and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Electrospray mass spectrometry revealed a protein with a molecular mass of 8632.0 for the fraction showing immunoreactivity against the N-terminus of chromogranin A, which differed by 48 u from that of the N-terminal processing product, vasostatin I (CGA1-76). Derivatization with mercaptoethanol showed that the peptide had an intact S—S bridge, which is a key structural feature of vasostatin I. Peptide mapping experiments involving reduction/alkylation with vinylpyridine and trypsin digestion were consistent with oxidation of the three methionine residues of vasostatin I to their sulphoxide forms. The oxidation of the methionine residues was found to occur during the C18 solid-phase extraction procedure. The use of freshly prepared Tris-HCl buffer and eluents and flushing the buffer and eluents with nitrogen were shown to result in the isolation of the non-oxidized form of vasostatin I.

Notes: Parallel simulation of incompressible fluid flows is considered on networks of homogeneous workstations. Coarse-grain parallelization of a Taylor-Galerkin/pressure-correction finite element algorithm are discussed, taking into account network communication costs. The main issues include the parallelization of system assembly, and iterative and direct solvers, that are of common interest to finite element and general numerical computation. The parallelization strategies are implemented on a Sun workstation cluster using the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) message passing library. Test results are obtained with a maximum of nineteen workstations and various PVM configurations are exhibited. Parallel efficiency close to ideal has been achieved for some strategies adopted. It is suggested that load balancing may not always be beneficial on distributed platforms with broadcasting communication connection. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The upper bound method of limit analysis of perfect plasticity is applied to stability problems of slopes with a general nonlinear failure criterion. Based on the upper bound method, a numerical procedure is suggested, which converts the complex system of differential equations to an initial value problem. Using this numerical procedure, an effective numerical method, called the inverse method, suitable for the solution of slope stability problems in soil mechanics with a general nonlinear failure criterion, is presented. A general nonlinear failure criterion for soils is also suggested, from which the effects of nonlinear failure parameters on the stability of slopes are discussed.
