Notizen: Abstract  Rose Atoll is an important refuge for giant clams (Tridacna maxima) that have been heavily exploited elsewhere in Samoa. During an extensive survey of six islands in the archipelago (50.5 ha surveyed in 420 transects), 97% of a total of 2853 clams were recorded at the atoll (42% of area surveyed). Clam densities were highest in the atoll lagoon, especially around the bases of the pinnacles (mean density=8870 ha-1). Estimated population size for the small atoll (615 ha) was approximately 27800 clams. Twenty four percent of the population consisted of mature clams (?12 cm), 70% of which occupied the pinnacles and shallow lagoon habitat. Estimated mortality was low (Z=0.3) and primarily due to natural mortality (M=0.3). Maximum recorded size (L max ) and asymptotic mean size (L ∞) were 25.0 cm and 27.8 cm respectively.

Notizen: Abstract Using a peroxidase micro-enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method anti-oncospheral antibodies were demonstrated in sera from four lambs after primary and challenge infections withTaenia ovis orT. hydatigena. Antibodies assayed using homologous oncospheral antigen (OA) reached a peak by 3–4 weeks after primary infection and at 1–3 weeks post-challenge infection, but waned to pre-infective, “background” levels by 8–12 weeks after each infection. Antibodies assayed against antigens in strobilar or cystic larval extracts persisted for long periods after the initial infections and exhibited different kinetics of response from those demonstrated against OA. These antibodies showed increased levels after challenge infection. Oncospheral antigens did not seem to be species specific although they appeared to elicit a stage-specific response. It is suggested that the anti-oncospheral antibody response could be associated with protective or “functional” antibody.

Notizen: Abstract A “crude” antigen prepared from the strobilate stage ofTaenia saginata was tested for its suitability in the peroxidase microenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis ofT. saginata cysticercosis in cattle. Sera were tested from laboratory and pasture-reared calves experimentally infected withT. saginata as well as from cattle naturally infected by grazing on pasture irrigated with sewage effluent. The specificity of the “diagnostic” antigen was assessed using sera from laboratory-reared cattle with monospecific infections ofT. saginata, T. hydatigena, Fasciola hepatica, or gastro-intestinal nematodes, and natural infections ofF. hepatica. Cross-reactions occurred in sera from all heterologous infections but the highest level occurred in cattle experimentally or naturally infected withF. hepatica. Clear diagnostic antibody levels were found in cattle experimentally infected withT. saginata but the test was not found to be reliable in individual animals with natural infections when compared with sera from cattle naturally infected withF. hepatica. On a group or herd basis ELISA using “crude” antigen and taking the mean absorbance values, could be useful as an indicator of a high prevalence rate ofT. saginata cysticercosis.

Notizen: This paper describes the pulse displacement technique(PDT) to simultaneously measure particle size and velocity in applications characterized by a large size range and high particle concentration. PDT is based on the detection of scattered refraction and reflection pulses which sweep past a detector at different times as a particle traverses a narrow probe volume. Basic analytical relationships are presented which allow the calculation of the spatial and temporal widths and separations of the reflection and refraction pulse as a function of particle diameter and velocity. Two implementations of PDT are discussed using one or two receivers with two laser sheets having the same or different wavelengths. This paper also discusses several methods to measure particle velocity with PDT, discusses the limitations associated with signal broadening in practical systems, and briefly presents experimental results which show that the temporal separation between the refraction and reflection and reflection pulse maxima is independent of collecting lens f-number from f/3 to f/20 for particle sizes ranging from 250 to 2000 μm.

Notizen: The volatile antimony compound trimethylantimony (TMA) was detected in headspace gases over anaerobic soil enrichment cultures spiked with potassium antimony tartrate. The presence of TMA was variable (12 positives from 104 cultures) and dependent upon both the inoculum source (environmental sample) and enrichment culture conditions. Positives for TMA formation were obtained with variable frequency for four of the six soils tested and for three types of enrichment culture, designed to encourage growth of nitrate-reducing, methane-producing or fermentative bacteria. The identity of the volatile antimony compound produced in each of the three types of enrichment culture was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-atomic absorption spectroscopy. There was no evidence of any other volatile antimony compound in the headspace gases. These data suggest that the capability to generate TMA is widely distributed in the terrestrial environment and is attributable to different metabolic types of micro-organisms. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Several organisms used for biomonitoring in the mercury-contaminated Wabigoon-English River System, Ontario, Canada (sport fish, forage fish, crayfish and others) were examined for their utility as bioindicators. Causes for spatial and temporal variability in mercury concentrations in biota are reviewed. The significance of intertrophic and intratrophic biotic relationships is evaluated on both a site-specific and intersite basis. Larger mature fish are the most effective integrators as these organisms are the most buffered from site-specific and seasonal variations in mercury concentrations and bioavailability. Where there are no physical barriers preventing movement of biota between contaminated and uncontaminated parts of the watercourse, younger, smaller organisms can better - ical zones of contamination because of their restricted range. Because many organisms can provide information on mercury contamination, the choice of the most suitable indicator depends upon the purpose of the study, the pharmacokinetics of mercury uptake by the organisms in question, and the chemodynamics of methyl and inorganic mercury species in the field.

Notizen: The methylation of several tin compounds by strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains (yeast) is described. The production of the methyl tin species was established by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Monomethyl tin (IV) products dominated but some dimethyl tin products were observed. This appears to be the first report of a tin methylation by a pure strain of a methylating species rather than a complex mixture obtained from an environmental source.
