Notes: Summary Polysaccharides such as dextrins, which are mixtures of linear α-(1,4)-linked D-glucose polymers, and dextrans, which are polymers of D-glucose units linked predominantly by α-(1,6) bonds, have been employed as chiral selectors in the capillary electrophoretic (CE) separation of enantiomers. Because these polymers are electrically neutral, the method is applicable to ionic compounds. Among the compounds tested the enantiomers of ibuprofen, naproxen, warfarin and the diltiazem synthetic intermediate 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′diyl hydrogen phosphate, which are anionic compounds, were successfully recognized by employing dextran or dextrin under neutral conditions. The enantiomers of basic or cationic drugs such as timepidium, primaquine, sulconazole, trimetoquinol, diltiazem and clentiazem were also successfully separated under acidic conditions. The effects of molecular mass and polysaccharide concentration on enantioselectivity were investigated. High concentrations of these polymers, especially dextrin, led to delayed migration times after repeated injections of the solutes into an uncoated capillary under neutral conditions. Consequently the capillary washing process was found to be very important to obtaining reproducible migration times in the system. A coated capillary was also investigated to overcome this problem. Finally, the method using electrically neutral polysaccharides was applied to the testing of the optical purity of the drug substances.

Notes: Summary Diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) dextran hydrochloride and three kinds of aminoglycosidic antibiotics; fradiomycin sulfate, kanamycin sulfate and streptomycin sulfate, were employed as chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis, enantiomer separation. These selectors are cationic or basic because of amino functionality and therefore used for enantiomer separation of acidic compounds. To avoid adsorption of the basic or cationic selectors on the capillary inner surface, a coated capillary was employed. Among those tested, enantiomers of binaphthyl compounds and synthetic intermediates of diltiazem analogues were separated. Methanol addition was effective for the improvement of peak shape and resolution.

Notes: A new method for solid-state ethanol fermentation (the SSEF system) was experimented on for the ethanol production from solid starchy materials, where a packedbed-type fermentor was used. Both cultivation of Aspergillus saitoi and enrichment of a saccharifying enzyme were effective for hydrolysis of the starch. Ethanol production was set in by a form of parallel fermentation using a respiration-deficient mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Produced ethanol was simultaneously stripped by circulating inert gas and separated in a condenser. Average ethanol concentration in the condensate was over 200 g/L, and over 90% of produced ethanol was recovered from the packed bed during 15 or 16 days of stripping. The fermentation efficiency was about 80%, which was evaluated much higher than those of conventional solid-state fermentations. The residue had lesser volume and a higher solids content compared with the distillery wastewaters of conventional liquid-state fermentations. This means an advantage for the treatment and the effective conversion of the residue into fetilizers or animal feeds.

Notes: Fluroinated epoxy resin adhesives containing diglycidylether of bisphenol AF (DGEBAF) with a fluorine content of 25.7 wt % are developed for fabrication of optical communications devices. These adhesives, formulated with a diluent of butanediol diglycidylether (BDDG) and a curing agent of polyether polyamine (Q694), can be cured at a curing temperature as low as 65°C and exhibit high transparency of more than 80% in the wavelength range of 0.5-1.3 μm. Moreover, they significantly reduce return loss at optical-glass/adhesive interfaces because of the low refractive indices of ca. 1.52 and also improve heat durability of optical devices. They are successfully applied to submarine optical fiber transmission system.

Notes: Thermal properties of polyurethane (PU) films prepared from solvolysis lignin (SL), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) were examined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. In the SL - PEG - MDI system, the SL content, the molecular weight (Mn) of PEG and the NCO/OH ratio were changed in order to control the thermal properties. Glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of the prepared PU's were dependent on the SL content, the Mn of PEG and the NCO/OH ratio. However, the Tg of PU was significantly influenced by the SL content: the increment of Tg was ca. 150 K when the SL content in PEG increased from 0 to ca. 50%. The decomposition of the PU's was markedly dependent on the content of SL. Other factors, such as the NCO/OH ratio and the Mn of PEG, are less dominant compared with the SL content. This fact suggests that the dissociation between the isocyanate groups and the phenolic OH groups in SL may be the major factor in the whole process of the thermal decomposition of the PU containing SL

Notes: Isotope ratio (IR) mass spectrometry was evaluated for the study of drug metabolism and balance using 13C,15N2- labelled antipyrine (AP) as a test drug. Rats were given 40 mg kg-1 (13C, 15N2)AP intraperitoneally. Breath, urine, faeces and blood were collected. Except for breath, samples were combusted in sealed quartz tubes. The resulting CO2 and N2 were analysed for excess 13C and 15N, relative to pre-dose samples, by IR mass spectrometry. In addition, blood levels of AP and cumulative excretion of urinary AP metabolites were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/selected ion monitoring (GC/MS/SIM) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) respectively. Excess 13C and 15N levels in blood were comparable with observed levels of AP, and urinary recoveries of 13C (42%) were in good agreement with those calculated from HPLC data (45%). N-Demethylation, one of the important pathways of AP metabolism, was most rapidly determined by excess 13CO2 excretion in breath (8%). The IR mass spectral analysis complemented gas chromatographic/mass spectrum and HPLC analyses, and was less complex.
