Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary In the past few years much interest has been focused on carbon, synthetic resin, and ceramic biomaterials, especially for orthopedic implants. Rubbed off microparticles of carbons of different modules, grains of ceramic glass, alumina and resin were tested in rats after implantation into the knee joint, the medullary cavity of the tibia and into the peritoneal cavity. The microparticles were carried off hematogenously and lymphatically into the lungs mostly after implantation into the bone. Alterations of the organ weights of thymus, liver and spleen after implantation of ceramic glass and carbon of ultrahigh module seem to indicate possible effects on the RES. Micromorphologic and scanning electron microscopic examinations showed good local compatibility of the grains.
