    Notizen: Infrared spectroscopy and thermal effusion have been used to study the nature of the silicon-hydrogen bond in sputtered a-Si:H alloys. The samples were prepared by reactive sputtering under different deposition conditions to produce varying hydrogen contents. The Fourier transform infrared spectra have been analyzed using the simplex algorithm to deconvolute the component peaks. This technique has been applied separately to both the stretching- and bending-mode regions of the infrared absorption spectra. Studies have been made of the effects of annealing on both the infrared and the thermal evolution spectra of hydrogen. The results indicate a redistribution and transformation of different bonding configurations due to annealing. A comparative study is presented of the thermal-effusion spectra for partial and total degassing with the infrared spectra taken before and after each phase of degassing.

    Notizen: An improved apparatus for measuring solubilities of solid–liquid systems at temperatures to 90 °C is described. The apparatus has a high capacity (up to 56 samples) and a long term temperature stability of ±3 mK. The design allows the saturated solution to be multiply sampled and microfiltered at the equilibration temperature, making it particularly suited to rapidly equilibrating systems. The reliability of the apparatus and sampling procedures were tested by measuring the solubilities of NaCl, Na2SO4, and Na2CO3 in water. The data obtained showed a routine precision of ±0.05% relative and agreed to within ±0.1% of recommended International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry values. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract The behaviour of 2-picoline with and without antimony during electrowinning of zinc from acidic sulfate solutions was studied and was compared with that of gum arabic which is commonly used in industry as a levelling agent. The effects of these additives on current efficiency, power consumption, deposit quality, polarization behaviour, crystallographic orientation and surface morphology were determined. The addition of 2-picoline reduced current efficiency, increased power consumption and lowered the surface quality of electrowon zinc. Addition of antimony increased current efficiency, reduced power consumption and produced improved surface morphology and crystal orientations, (101) (112) (102) (103) (114) over a wide range of their combinations.

    Notizen: Abstract The apparent molar volumes Vϕ and heat capacities C p,ϕ of NaCl, LiCl, NaF, KI, NaBPh4 and Ph4PCl have been determined in solutions of H2O containing up to 40 mass% t-butyl alcohol (TBA) by flow densitometry and flow microcalorimetry. Combination of these results with literature data allows calculation of Vϕ and C p,ϕ for 16 ions in these mixtures using the assumption that ΔtXφ(Ph4P+) = ΔtXφ(BPh 4 − ) where X=V or C p and ΔtXφ is the change in Xϕ for a species on transfer from H2O to TBA-H2O mixtures. These are the first reported single ion values for C p,ϕ in a mixed solvent. While whole electrolyte volumes and heat capacities show relatively smooth changes with solvent composition, ΔtXφ(ion) exhibit two well-developed extrema at around 10 and 25 mass% TBA. The shape of the ΔtXφ(ion) curves shows considerable uniformity among the alkali metal cations and the halide ions but the extrema become more pronounced with increasing size among the tetraalkylammonium ions. These extrema are analogous to those observed in aqueous organic mixtures of surfactants and are probably indicative of microphase transitions in these strongly interacting solvent mixtures.

    Notizen: Abstract Apparent molar volumes Vφ and heat capacities Cp,φ of NaCl, KCl, KNO3, AgNO3, KI, NaBPh4 and Ph4PCl have been measured in acetonitrile (AN)-water mixtures up to xAN=0.25 by flow densitometry and flow microcalorimetry. Limited data have also been obtained for NaF, LiCl and KBr up to x AN =0.15. Single ion volumes and heat capacities of transfer were obtained using the assumption ΔtXφ(PH4P+) = ΔtXφ(BPh4-) where X=V or C p and ΔtXφ is the change in Xφ for a species on transfer from H2O to AN-H2O mixtures. Volumes and heat capacities for simple salts show relatively little dependence on solvent composition. However, ΔtXφ for simple ions show more pronounced variations, exhibiting at least one extremum. These extrema are similar to but much less pronounced than those derived previously for ions in t-butanol-water mixtures. Surprisingly little correlation is found between the present data and other thermodynamic transfer functions. This is attributed to the predominance of ion-solvent over solvent-solvent interactions in AN-H2O solutions. ΔtVφ and ΔtCp,φ for the silver ion differ markedly from those of the alkali metal ions as a result of the well-known specific interaction between Ag+ and AN.

    Notizen: Abstract The effects of sodium lauryl sulphate(SLS) in the presence and absence of antimony(iii) on the current efficiency, power consumption and polarization behaviour of zinc were determined. The surface morphologies and deposit crystallographic orientations were also evaluated. The results were compared with glue as the addition agent. The addition of sodium lauryl sulfate to the zinc sulfate solution increased current efficiency, reduced power consumption and improved the surface morphology. Maximum current efficiency and minimum power consumption were achieved on addition of 0.02mgdm−3 Sb with 1mgdm−3 sodium lauryl sulfate.

    Notizen: Abstract The effects of 4-ethylpyridine and 2-cyanopyridine on the electrowinning of zinc in the presence and absence of antimony have been studied. The results are compared with those of a common industrial additive, gum arabic. Addition of either compound reduced current efficiency, increased power consumption and lowered the surface quality of electrodeposited zinc. Both the additives showed similar polarization behaviour to gum arabic. Addition of 0.04mgdm−3 antimony increased current efficiency, reduced power consumption and altered the surface morphology and crystallographic orientations. Combinations of antimony with 4-ethylpyridine resulted in very good current efficiencies, and zinc morphology and quality.
