Notes: Summary The expression of HLA-DR was examined in 38 cases of meningiomas with the streptavidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method using two monoclonal antibodies to HLA-DR (LN-3 and TAL-IB5) on formalinfixed, paraffin-embedded specimens. Similar immunoreactivity was obtained with these two monoclonal antibodies. In addition to infiltrated lymphoid cells and perivascular macrophages, tumor cells themselves showed HLA-DR expression in 16 cases (42%) of meningiomas. The rate of HLA-DR-positive cases in the transitional and fibrous subtypes (64% and 67%, respectively) was higher than that in the meningotheliomatous subtype (8%). Spindle-shaped tumor cells were frequently positive for HLA-DR, whereas few of meningotheliomatous cells with plump cytoplasm were positive. Most of HLA-DR-positive cases showed no or scanty lymphoid cell infiltration, and a few cases with marked infiltration of lymphoid cells were variable for HLA-DR expression. These findings suggest little correlation between HLA-DR expression of tumor cells and the degree of lymphoid cell infiltration, but indicate an aberrant HLA-DR expression of tumor cells themselves.

Notes: Summary The immunohistochemical distribution of α and β subunits of S-100 protein (S-100α, S-100β, respectively) in 138 cases of human brain tumors was investigated by the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method. Brain tumors can be divided into four groups: group 1 [S-100α (+) and/or S-100β (+)]; astrocytoma, glioblastoma, ependymoma, subependymoma, oligodendroglioma, choroid plexus papilloma, gangliocytoma, meningioma, chordoma, malignant melanoma. Group 2 [S-100α (+) and S-100β (-)]; pineoblastoma, pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, rhabdomyosarcoma. Group 3 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (+)]; acoustic Schwannoma. Group 4 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (-)]; medulloblastoma, malignant lymphoma, germinoma. The S-100β immunoreactivity pattern in brain tumors was similar to those obtained using conventional anti-S-100 protein sera. In the first group of brain tumors both the number of positively stained tumor cells and the staining intensity were generally greater for S-100β than for S-100α with a few exceptions including one gemistocytic astrocytoma, one subependymoma, one malignant melanoma, and some cases of glioblastomas. As to the relationship between malignancy and S-100 protein in glioma, S-100β immunoreactivity decreased according to degree of malignancy, while that of S-100α varied, suggesting a heterogeneity of tumor cells in glioblastomas. Immunostaining for S-100α and S-100β might become a useful diagnostic procedure in brain tumors and may give us more detailed and precise data of S-100 protein in brain tumors.

Notes: Summary A necropsy case of a primary rhabdomyosarcoma with chronic paragonimiasis in the cerebrum of a 68-year-old man is reported. The clinical data showed a right hemiplegia and dysarthria which became lethal in 6 months even though operation and radiation therapy were performed. Computed tomography revealed a large low-density area associated with the peripheral enhancement in the left basal ganglia, and multiple conglomerated calcified masses in the left temporal and occipital lobes. Biopsied and necropsied materials of the tumor in the basal ganglia was reddish brown in color and histologically was composed of purely mesenchymal derivatives with both embryonal and mature striated muscle cells but neither neuronal nor glial elements. Some of the tumor cells with extending slender cytoplasms showed obvious cross striations at the light and electron microscope levels and immunohistochemical reactivity for myoglobin. All tumor cells were also positive for vimentin, but not for glial fibrillary acidic protein. The clinical and necropsy findings revealed no primary lesion anywhere but in the brain. In addition, numerous dead oval eggs ofParagonimus westermani were found in many cystoid lesions encapsulated by thick connective tissues with calcification and/or ossification. Clinicopathological features of 24 cases of primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the central nervous system reported in the literature are reviewed briefly. The histogenesis of this tumor are discussed together with comments on cerebral paragonimiasis.

Notes: A solution conformational analysis of dolastatin 10, a powerful antineoplaslic agent, has been carried out by means of nmr techniques and theoretical calculations. 1H mono- and bidimensional nmr experiments, as well as 1H-13C heterocorrelated spectra, have been performed on CD2Cl12 solutions. The most interesting nmr data is a huge shielding of the aCH (25) proton of the Dov residue, suggesting the presence of an interaction between the N-terminal and the aromatic C-terminal ends of the molecule. The possibility of a head-to-tail intermolecular association having been discarded, the presence of a series of preferred folded conformation has been hypothesized. Conformational theoretical analysis supports the nmr hypothesis of a folded peptide-like molecule, and a series of possible conformers in good agreement with the experimental data have been analyzed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Many styrylpyridinium compounds (SPC), which are very stable in the dark, were prepared and evaluated as photobleachable dyes for contrast enhanced lithography (CEL). The photobleaching characteristics of water-soluble contrast enhancing materials composed of SPC and water-soluble polymer depend on the structure of the SPC and the kind of polymers used. The technique using SPC-based CEL proved to be very effective for the resist pattern profiles.

Notes: Recently there has been a growth of interest in the use of diaryliodonium salts (Ar2I+X-), triarylsulfonium salts (Ar3S+X-) and triarylselenonium salts (Ar3Se+X-) as photochemical initiator for cationic polymerizations. It is suggested by Ledwith that electron transfer to these cations results in fragmentation with the formation of aryl radicals and if the reducing species is a suitable free radical, a chain reaction for formation of cation will occur. We carried out radiation-induced polymerization of α-methyl-styrene in dichloromethane and bulk cyclohexene oxide in the presence of triphenyliodonium salt (C6H5)2 (I+PF-). Polymerization of these monomers was observed in the presence of these salts (G(-M)⋍ 1300), while no polymer was obtained in the absence of salts. Postpolymerization was negligibly small. This polymerization is considered to be initiated by the reaction of free radicals produced by radiation with cation salts and to proceed by cationic mechanism, since α-methylstyrene polymerized by ionic mechanism but hardly polymerizes by radical mechanism and this polymerization was suppressed in the presence of a small amount of water. The initiation mechanism of this polymerization was investigated by the use of pulse radiolysis technique.

Notes: Monodisperse microspheres of poly(diethylene glycol dimethacrylate) with diameters in the size range 0.4-4.8 μm were prepared by the radiation-induced polymerization. Effects of solvent viscosity and monomer solubility were investigated for various kinds of solvents. The number of the nuclei, produced in the early stage of the polymerization, was found to be constant during the remainder of the polymerization. The nuclei grow to be monodisperse polymer particles without aggregation. This is attributed to the low mobility of the growing polymer particles.

Notes: Blending of polystyrenes (PS) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was performed by using a continuous corotating twin screw extruder. The influence of LCP content on the blending process was studied by changing the barrel heater temperature and the screw speed. The torque of screw shafts, generated during the blending process, was influenced by LCP content and its influence was not simple. The torque generated during the blending process was not directly related to the apparent melt viscosity of blends. Further, the effects of the matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blends were studied using three grades of PS as matrix resins. It was found that the size of the LCP dispersed phase decreased with increasing matrix viscosity. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blend were improved. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In order to extend the application of grafting for the modification of natural polymers, the graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto gelatin by radical initiators was studied in aqueous solution at temperatures between 60°C and 80°C. Among the initiators used (peroxy-sulfates, α,α′-azobisisobutylonitrile, and benzoyl peroxide), potassium peroxysulfate was found to be the most efficient initiator in this particular graft polymerization. From the kinetic data with this initiator, it was shown that (1) efficiency of grafting is higher at lower temperature; (2) a sharp increase in the efficiency of grafting occurs at the later period of the polymerization at high temperature, which is attributable to the combination between homopolymer and backbone gelatin; and (3) generally, the number of branches was small and the molecular weight of the branch polymer was high in this polymerization.

Notes: Three kinds of trapped radicals are observed in poly(maleic anhydride) (Poly-MAH) which were prepared by the use of radical initiators such as AIBN or BPO. It was found that these radicals were transformed to the active species so as to initiate the cationic polymerization. The structure of these radicals was studied by the ESR and the kinetic analysis of MAH polymerization in the presence of various additives.
