Notes: Abstract Blastobacter aggregatus and a Blastobacter-like isolate (IFAM 1031) were analysed by the 16S ribosomal RNA cataloguing approach in order to determine their phylogenetic position. Both phenotypical similar organisms are members of the alpha-subdivision of purple phototrophic bacteria and their non-phototrophic relatives but they are not closely related: B. aggregatus clusters with Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Rhizobium species; the unnamed strain displays a moderate relationship to members of Rhodobacter and Paracoccus denitrificans, with which is shares the character of a nicked 23S rRNA. Although the budding isolate IFAM 1031 resembles members of Blastobacter phenotypically, in the broad DNA G+C content and in the fatty acid pattern, a unique set of characters was found which allows description of the isolate as the typus of a new genus for which Gemmobacter gen. nov. is proposed, with G. aquatilis sp. nov. as the type species. G. aquatilis harbors at least two plasmids of different size and unknown function.

Description / Table of Contents: The results obtained by measuring the ultrasonic velocity at 0.8 MHz in dispersions of polymers having different chemical composition are described. Based on the values of compressibility of the polymers resulting from ultrasonic velocity data the plasticity of dispersed particles is estimated. The relationship between chemical structure and compressibility is discussed. A correlation between compressibility and glass transition temperature, as determined by ultrasonic absorption measurements at 0.8 MHz, is established. The investigations are of importance in industrial testing of dispersions of plastomers and elastomers.

Description / Table of Contents: The ultrasonic attenuation of PVAC-dispersions outside the relaxation regions has been studied in the frequency range between 150 kHz and 1 GHz. With all studied samples the excess attenuation is proportional to the frequency over a range of four decades. Comparing the experimental results with theoretical model shows that sound attenuation in polymer dispersions can be explained by a model proposed for other heterogeneous systems.

Description / Table of Contents: 13C-NMR measurements were carried out in order to determine the microstructure of sequences in terpolymers of vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid with varying amounts of ethyl acrylate and negligible amount of acrylic acid. The resonances of the methin carbon were assigned to traids, that of methylene carbon of the main chain to diads of the monomer units. The following microstructure parameters were determined from the particle frequency and compared with data calculated from the statistical distribution: mean block length, amount of blocks, block parameter and reactivity product rvacrea.

Description / Table of Contents: Ultrasonic absorption measurements were carried out with polymers having analogous basic chemical structure in different states of dispersion. Molecular dispers systems of poly(vinyl acetate) and polyacrylate show relaxation in the range of 10 to 80 MHz which can be explained by local changes of conformation. In the colloid disperse state a cooperative mechanism of motion was found at suitable values of the measuring temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Ultrasonic measurements were carried out with ethyl acrylate (EA)/vinyl acetate (VAC)/acrylic acid (VS) terpolymers in aqueous dispersion. The experimental results were compared with data obtained by 13C-NMR investigations and explained by considering the mean sequence length. Three phases were detected consisting of polyvinylacetate, polyethylacrylate and P(VAC-EA). The fraction of these phases within the dispersed particle was calculated from the mean sequence length. A quantitative correlation was established by using the corresponding values of ultrasonic absorption and particle compressibility.
