Notizen: Abstract In an attempt to develop a system for producing transformed plants from explants ofDendranthema grandiflora, the susceptibility of the cultivar Super White to various wild-type strains ofAgrobacterium tumefaciens andA. rhizogenes was investigated. Tumour formation was not a reliable indicator of the ability of a related disarmed strain to mediate transformation. Following inoculation of explants with disarmedAgrobacterium strains, a number of shoots developed on selective media. However, none of these shoots were transformed. By co-cultivating stem internode explants with a mixed inoculum of wild-type and disarmed strains, it was possible to obtain a callus stably transformed withAgrobacterium carrying a disarmed T-DNA. Histological analysis of explants revealed that shoot regeneration initially occurred from the cells of the epidermis and subsequently from the cortex. However, the cells which were susceptible to T-DNA transfer were confined to the vascular tissue.

Notizen: Abstract It is difficult to permanently alter the shape of cartilage in a controlled way. In otolaryngology and plastic surgery several procedures are done to alter the shape of cartilage, for example the correction of a deviated nasal septum and surgery for bat ears. The aim of this paper is to study the main parameters which are necessary for the phenomenon of reshaping of cartilage under non-destructive laser radiation. We have measured temperature and stress in cartilage when it is being reshaped with a holmium laser, It has been shown that laser-induced stress relaxation in cartilage takes place when the tissue temperature exceeds 70°C. We have determined the conditions which allow the shape of cartilage to be altered without producing any pronounced alteration to matrix structure or chondrocytes.

Notizen: Summary Two numerical taxonomic techniques, single linkage cluster analysis (SLCA) and principal components analysis (PCA) were used to study the relationship between Dioscorea cayenensis and D. rotundata cultivars. The study was prompted by the confusion in the taxonomy of the two taxa. Twenty-two cultivars (14 of D. rotundata and 8 of D. cayenensis) were collected and planted under the same environmental conditions for 3 successive years. Altogether, 76 characters, which include morphological, anatomical and ecological characters were observed and coded for analyses. Results from both methods agreed and showed that two groups of taxa exist. The discrimination between groups and description of differences between groups were more strongly marked from the PCA than in the SLCA.
