    Notes: Abstract  DNA heterogeneity of colorectal carcinomas has been investigated by flow cytometry; most studies have focused on the clinical usefulness of DNA ploidy analysis. Since cancers consist of predominant subclones with proliferative advantage due to clonal expansion, we attempted to analyse the clonal expansion of colorectal carcinomas within a tumour by measuring DNA ploidy. The DNA ploidy and heterogeneity of multiple fresh samples obtained from 164 colorectal adenocarcinomas were analysed by flow cytometry. Each tumour was divided into an average of six specimens, which were analysed separately. For 146 of the tumours (89%) at least one DNA aneuploid population was found within the cancer tissue examined. DNA multiploidy was detected in 26 cases (17.8%) among the cancers with aneuploidy. Based on the DNA index (DI), hypertriploid aneuploidy (1.7〈DI〈1.8) was found most frequently in the aneuploid colorectal cancers examined. DNA ploidy heterogeneity was seen in 75 (51.4%) of the DNA aneuploid tumours. There were only 3 cases with more than three subclones including a diploid line. The present results indicate that colorectal carcinomas consist of a few dominant subclones and have a DNA content (hypertriploid aneuploid) that confers a proliferative advantage.

    Notes: Abstract The expression of p53 was studied immunohistochemically in combination with the DNA ploidy pattern by gland isolation in 97 alcohol-fixed gastric lesions. A polyclonal antibody, CM-1, was applied to the paraffin-embedded sections in this study. Overexpression of the p53 protein was found in 73.2% of 41 well or moderately differentiated gastric carcinomas and 52.2% of 23 cases with poor differentiation (P〈0.05). Immunoreactivity of p53 was also detected in isolated cancerous glands. No p53 immunoreactivity was detected in benign gastric lesions including adenomas, hyperplastic polyps and regions of intestinal metaplasia. In addition, flow cytometric DNA analysis was performed on isolated glandular epithelium adjacent to the portions used for immunostaining. DNA aneuploidy (DA) was detected in 85.7% of the well or moderately differentiated carcinomas and 42.9% of those with poor differentiation (P〈0.05). There was a positive correlation between DA, p53 positivity and the presence of regional lymph node metastasis, but not with other clinicopathological variables. In spite of the limited applicability of this method to poorly differentiated gastric cancer, we found that immunostaining and flow cytometry in combination with the gland isolation method facilitates analysis of gastric carcinogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivity of molten InSb was measured on board the TEXUS-24 sounding rocket by the transient hot-wire method using the originally designed thermal conductivity measurement facility (TCMF). Measurements made through this facility were affected by natural convection on the ground. This natural convection was confirmed to be sufficiently suppressed during a microgravity environment. The thermal conductivity of molten InSb was 15.8 and 18.2 W·m−1·K−1 at 830 and 890 K, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of molten InSb in the temperature range between 800 and 870 K was measured by the transient hot-wire method using a ceramic probe. The probe was fabricated from a tungsten wire printed on an alumina substrate and coated with a thin alumina layer. The thermal conductivity was found to be about 18 W· m−·K−at the melting point and increased moderately with increasing temperature. The thermal conductivity of alumina used as the substrate for the probe was also measured in the same temperature range.

    Notes: Abstract Thermophysical properties of molten semiconductors are reviewed. Published data for viscosity, thermal conductivity, surface tension, and other properties are presented. Several measurement methods often used for molten semiconductors are described. Recommended values of thermophysical properties are tabulated for Si, Ge, GaAs, InP, InSb, GaSb, and other compounds. This review shows that further measurements of thermophysical properties of GaAs and InP in the molten state are required. It is also indicated that a very limited amount of data on emissivity is available. Space experiments relating to thermophysical property measurements are described briefly.

    Notes: Abstract The effectiveness of 10-s microgravity on thermophysical property measurements on molten materials, such as molten semiconductors, is discussed. The thermal conductivity of molten InSb was successfully measured under microgravity conditions on board the German sounding rocket TEXUS and in a drop shaft in Hokkaido, Japan. Surface tension measurements using an oscillating drop method was attempted in low gravity using a parabolic flight of the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Combined levitation and microgravity, which can provide a contamination-free and undercooled condition. is recommended as a novel approach to obtain missing thermophysical property data on undercooled melts of semiconductors.

    Notes: The effect of end groups on the low-temperature dielectric relaxation in poly(4,4′-oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) has been studied using three kinds of samples with different content of anhydride end groups. The magnitude of the dielectric loss peak, designated here the V peak, which appears near -40°C at 1 kHz, depends on the content of anhydride end groups. If a sample with few anhydride end groups is allowed to absorb water, a loss peak appears near the temperature region of the V peak, but it disappears after subsequent heating. In contrast, a sample having a larger amount of anhydride end groups exhibits a large V peak which remains even after further heating. We conclude that the —O—portion of the anhydride end groups is responsible for the V peak, though there may be an additional contribution from absorbed water.
