    Notes: Summary The peptidergic innervation of the human and guinea pig uterus was studied using immunohistochemical methods. Antibodies against several peptides were applied for the PAP-technique to stain peptidergic nerves specifically. These are located in the adventitia of large uterine vessels in the myometrium and smaller vessels of the myometrium and endometrium. A differential distribution of the individual peptides was observed for VIP-IR (vasoactive intestinal polypeptide immunoreactivity), NPY-IR (neuropeptide Y), SP-IR (substance P), SOM-IR (somatostatin) and NT-IR (neurotensin) nerve fibers. Specific functional implications for these neuropetides can be derived from their histochemical location.

    Notes: Summary By means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique the existence of neuropeptide Y-immunoreactivity (NPY-IR) in nerve fibers of the normal human uterine tube was established. NPY-IR fibers are found to supply vascular and non-vascular smooth muscles of the uterine tube. In both systems the density of NPY-IR nerves is markedly high. The NPY-IR nerves exhibit a predominance for the arterial portion of the oviductal vasculature in the serosal, the muscle and the mucosal layer. Furthermore in the mucosal layer, some NPY-IR fibers occur in contact with the surface epithelium. In-vitro experiments with helical strips of the human uterine tube reveal no significant effects of NPY alone of the different parameters (resting tension, frequency and amplitude of spontaneous contractions) of mechanical activity while it seems to act in combination with acetylcholine. Thus, the distinct innervation patterns of the NPY-IR nerve fibers as well as the results obtained by bioassay may suggest a neuromodulator function of this neuropeptide in the human uterine tube. In this respect, NPY may play an important role in the transport of the eggs through the tube.

    Notes: Summary Differentiated teratomas frequently contain the apparent equivalent of gastrointestinal mucosa. 53 testicular teratomas were investigated for the incidence of entero-endocrine cells. Enterochromaffin(EC)-cells were demonstrated by formaldehyde induced fluorescence (FIF), while the other endocrine cells were identified by immunohistochemistry. 11 of 53 teratomas contained endocrine cells associated with the gastrointestinal epithelium. The most frequently found cell type was the EC-cell, followed by somatostatin-, glucagon- and pancreatic polypeptide-immunoreactive cells. The teratoma tissue blocks (20 of 53) also frequently exhibited normal testicular tissue which did not contain any EC-cell or other entero-endocrine cells. The results are of interest in considering the cytogenesis of entero-endocrine cells and the histogenesis of testicular carcinoids, indicating that the entero-endocrine cells derive from the intestinal epithelium arising from undifferentiated stem cells. Furthermore, it seems probable that primary testicular carcinoids can develop from pre-existent teratomas by proliferation of their entero-endocrine cells.

    Notes: Summary The immunogold technique was applied to detect cardiodilatin-immunoreactivity (CDD-IR) in human heart. Using antibodies directed against C-terminal regions of CDD, we could identify colloidal gold label in specific atrial granules of human heart. The granules in all areas of the myoendocrine cells were homogeneously labelled and all right atrial biopsy specimen of patients with different heart diseases reacted positively and had the same distribution of label. The Golgi-apparatus and ergastoplasma exhibited and extremely weak CDD-IR. The results indicate a predominant storage of CDD in specific granules.

    Notes: Summary The placental labyrinth of the chorioallantoic placenta of the rat was studied with transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Full-term placentas were investigated after perfusion fixation from the maternal and fetal circulation, including thin-sectioning and freeze-fracturing. The labyrinthal three-dimensional structure was found not to be trabecular but spongious lamellar. We propose a division of the lamellae into three groups—the first, second, and third order. The trophoblastic layers are described in detail, showing a cellular layer I and two syncytial layers II and III. Layer I is found to be fenestrated and highly permeable. Layers II and III are connected by extended gap junction areas. It is suggested that the gap junctions function as a molecular sieve and represent the limiting barrier in diaplacental transport of the choriollantoic placenta. Fetal capillaries are fenestrated and endothelial cells are connected by tight junctions. The functional significance of the morphologic findings is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Region-specific antibodies against synthetic N-terminal fragments of cardiodilatin (CDD) were raised in rabbits and used for the immunohistochemical detection of this new peptide hormone in the myoendocrine cells within the cardiac atria of several species. The peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) immunohistochemical methods gave identical results of cardiodilatin-immunoreactivity (CDD-IR) within the tissue. In addition to the porcine right atrial appendage, myoendocrine cells with CDD-IR were also detected in the left atrium of porcine heart, as well as in other species such as dog and cat. The exact localization of the immunoreactivity in specific secretory granules was mostly related to the Golgi-area which is located on both nuclear poles of auricular myoendocrine cells. The results confirm that cardiodilatin is stored in secretory granules observed through electron microscopical means. This hormone is most likely synthesized and released in myoendocrine cells, exerting its important cardiovascular effects.

    Notes: Summary An immunohistochemical study was carried out in order to investigate the occurrence of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in intralingual nervous tissue of different species. The study revealed that VIP-immunoreactive (IR) nerves and ganglia were widely found in all species studied. The following areas of the tongue tissue contain VIP-IR nerves: (1) Within the perivascular plexus many VIP-IR nerves can be found adjoining AV-anastomoses and medium-sized arteries, whereas the veins exhibit only a moderate number. (2) Intralingual ganglia contain VIP-IR perikarya and varicosities. (3) Lingual glands are regularly innervated by VIP-IR periglandular plexus. (4) Sub-and intraepithelial nerves react to VIP immunohistochemically and occur in different locations. The results of this study indicate that VIP is an important neuropeptide of the intralingual nerves. It is suggested that VIP has various functions as a neurotransmitter and/or neuromodulator which may be summarized as follows: (1) the vascular and glandular innervation can be assumed to be of an efferent nature, and (2) some subepithelial and intraepithelial nerves are afferent fibers.

    Notes: Summary Using various region specific antibodies raised against partial sequences of synthetic cardiodilatin (CDD) we detected immunoreactive neurons with their perikarya in the nucleus periventricularis of Tupaia belangeri. The fibers could be traced laterally directed towards the amygdaloid complex and some varicosities were also observed in the lateral parts of the nucleus periventricularis. It is postulated that brain CDD represents a new neuropeptide and that these CDD-IR neurons are involved in specific functions related to the modulation of the cardiovascular centers.

    Notes: Summary Immunohistochemical investigations with different antisera against cardiodilatin 99–126 or alpha atrial natriuretic polypeptide revealed the presence of cardiac hormones not only in the atria of rats but also in strands of myoendocrine cells located in subendocardial regions of the ventricular septum. The localization of CDD-IR (cardiodilatin immunoreactivity) in the ventricle is associated with the location of the conduction system in the rat. The significance of the morphological relationship between cardiodilatin and the conduction system of the rat heart is discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Harnblasenepithel des Maulwurfs wurde elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht. Bei bestimmten Tieren finden sich in den Intermediärzellen „matrixreiche“ Riesenmitochondrien. Diese Riesenmitochondrien scheinen aus normalen Mitochondrien hervorzugehen und enthalten verschieden geformte Einschlüsse. Andere Organe und Zellen bei Maulwürfen mit Riesenmitochondrien in den Intermediärzellen des Harnblasenepithels weisen normale Mitochondrien auf. Es handelt sich demnach hier um eine sog. „Mitochondriose der Intermediärzellen“. Bedeutung, Bildung und Abbau der Riesenmitochondrien werden diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary Giant mitochondria containing an enormous matrix volume were found in the intermediary cells of the urinary bladder transitional epithelium of the mole. Regularly shaped mitochondria develop club-like protrusions forming giant mitochondria that contain several types of inclusions. Various other tissues were examined, but we could state that giant mitochondria exist only in the intermediary cells of the urinary bladder epithelium. Thus a peculiar “intermediary cell mitochondriosis” is described in this paper, not regularly occurring in the mole. The functional significance of the giant mitochondria is discussed.
