Notes: Manufacturing management texts describe ‘just-in-time’ production as an innovative paradigm for manufacturing control, originally developed in Japan, which when implemented by Western companies will enable them to remain internationally competitive. This article describes how manufacturing techniques observed in Japan have been radically modified to suit Western organisations, and discusses the significance of continuing to describe them as ‘Japanese’.

Notes: Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for communication between different corporate computer systems was expected to transform relationships between firms. However, this detailed study of three sectors of the UK publishing industry—the book trade; the magazine and newspaper trade; and newsprint supply to newspapers—found that EDI developed in a slow and incremental manner. This calls into question the radical visions of proponents of business network redesign.

Notes: FRIL: A Support Logic Programming System is principally an extension of Prolog designed to facilitate the modelling of uncertainty in applications which are suitable for Prolog and need to allow for probabilistic, evidential or vague reasoning. This review was carried out on an Amstrad 1640HD. The product runs on IBM PC, XT, AT and PS/2 computers and compatibles running MS-DOS 3.0 or higher, with 640 Kb RAM. It also runs on a variety of workstations and minicomputers such as the Sun and VAX range. Prices of currently available versions are as follows:〈list xml:id="l1" style="plain"〉PC single user: £495PC single user with expanded memory (2 Mb): £995PC networks (up to ten PCs): £1495SUN, Apollo HP300 workstations: £2500MicroVax and VAX workstations (UNIX or VMS): £5000VAX 11/730, 11/750, 11/780 (UNIX or VMS): £6000.The product is available from FRIL Systems Ltd, Bristol ITeC, St Anne's House, St Anne's Road, Bristol BS4 4AB, England. Notes: Abstract: This paper reports experience with the use of two expert system shell’ packages gained during the ARIES project. We report on the desiderata used for selecting the products, the positive and negative features of each and draw some general conclusions about their utility for future systems development. The microcomputer approach is compared with that of specialist workstations and conclusions are drawn concerning design methods for knowledge based systems. The two products considered are Crystal and Leonardo.

Notes: Abstract:  Background: Decreasing the use of continuous electronic fetal monitoring and increasing professional labor support for low-risk pregnancies are recommended by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada. This study explored factors influencing the successful (and unsuccessful) introduction of an evidence-based fetal health surveillance guideline. Methods: This qualitative case study was conducted at two tertiary and one community hospital. Data were collected in 14 clinician focus groups (51 nurses), followed by 8 interviews with nurse administrators and educators. Analysis of verbatim transcripts and unit records included coding and categorizing data to form profiles that were compared across hospitals. Results: Implementation of the guideline recommendations in the hospital settings was affected by many different factors originating in the practice environment, with the potential adopters, and related to the characteristics of the guideline. The influences of these diverse factors interacted sometimes to magnify or counteract each other's effect. The physical setting, adopter concerns, and the medicolegal issues surrounding the guideline played critical roles in uptake. In addition, changes preceding the introduction of the recommendations, the institution's agenda, and nursing and medical leadership influenced the uptake of guideline recommendations. The number and experience of nurses in each setting and availability of equipment also affected guideline acceptance and use. Conclusions: When implementing best practice, it is important to identify organizational barriers to the change that will need managing by the appropriate level of administration in the organization. Careful tailoring of implementation interventions to the barriers originating with the potential adopters is also necessary. Be prepared for unanticipated effects.

Notes: We use Monte Carlo methods to investigate the end-to-end distance distribution and entropic elasticity of self-avoiding walks in a three-dimensional half-space with both ends adsorbed on the limiting surface. The obtained distributions are well described by the Redner–des Cloizeaux (RdC) ansatz q(x)=Cxθ exp(−(Kx)t), x being the rescaled length. Using the recent solution of the junction affine model for networks of RdC springs we apply the results to the cytoskeleton of the red blood cell (RBC), a two-dimensional network of spectrin molecules which is attached to the inner surface of the erythrocyte membrane. The shear moduli predicted for a noninteracting surface are in close agreement with simulation results by Boal for a bead–spring model of the spectrin network. Moreover, we calculate stress–strain relations for finite deformations. In particular for a network which is fully adsorbed on the bilayer we find a strongly nonlinear elastic response. Our results suggest that the elastic properties of RBCs cannot be obtained within the usual Gaussian models and depend sensitively on the degree of adsorption of the spectrin network. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Peroxisomes participate in many biological functions including detoxification of reactive oxygen species and biosynthesis of oxylipin signalling molecules. Peroxisome protein and enzyme activities have been reported to change in response to salt stress. To investigate the relationship between peroxisomes and salt stress the level of expression of three peroxisome-associated genes, thiolase (PED1), PEX10 and PEX1 was analysed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The steady-state transcript level of all three genes was increased by salt and ABA treatment, and was blocked in the abi1-1 mutant. Salt-dependent increase of transcript for all three genes also required the JAR1 gene as it was prevented in the jar1-1 mutant. Expression of thiolase, and to a lesser extent PEX1, was increased in the jar1-1 mutant in the absence of salt, suggesting jasmonate may negatively regulate these genes in the absence of salt stress. PEX1 was up-regulated in the ethylene over-producer eto1-1 and salt had an additive effect on PEX1 transcript level, but salt induction may be inhibited in the ethylene-insensitive line etr1-1. Consistent with this, PEX1 was also up-regulated in transgenic plants over-expressing the ethylene response element binding factors AtERF1 and AtERF5.
