Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. A girl aged 3 years was struck by an automobile and admitted to hospital unconscious with a head injury and a right hemiparesis. Pelvic and left femoral fractures were managed with skin traction. Three weeks after the injury the range of motion of the right hip joint was reduced and movements were painful. Radiographic examination two weeks later revealed heterotopic bone formation around the hip joint. Immobilisation was the only treatment offered. One year after injury, the ectopic ossification around the hip had resolved spontaneously, and she was able to walk independently.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-We have measured the y-ray spectrum of the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident at loannina, located in northwestern Greece, nearly 1,500 km south-west of Chernobyl. We have examined air filters collected every 24 h since 29 April to monitor the y-radiation activity, using an ...

Notes: Summary Six cases of hydatid disease affecting the vertebrae are described. Four patients presented with paraparesis and sphincter disturbances while the other two presented with low back pain and sciatica. Myelographic findings were positive in all six patients. The CT scans showed a paravertebral mass with destruction of bone in two cases. The nuclear magnetic resonance performed in one patient showed the exact extent of the disease all along the spine. Posterior laminectomy with decompression of the spinal cord and removal of the hydatid cysts was performed in all six patients. After the operation four patients received oral treatment with mebendazole. The patients with paraparesis showed little improvement of their neurological status. The two patients with low back pain and sciatica showed marked improvement. Hydatid disease affecting the vertebrae presents with neurological complications due to cord compression. The prognosis remains poor in spite of laminectomy, although removal of the hydatid cysts and long-term mebendazole medication may result in relief of symptoms.

Notes: Abstract.  High-resolution spectroscopic analysis of inelastically scattered X-ray K β radiation of Cu from polycrystalline Be and B shows some peculiar structure in the region of the inelastically scattered radiation. Coherent scattering of the low-energy satellite structure of the primary Cu-K β lines, which extends in the same low-energy region, contaminates the inelastic spectrum and may be responsible for the observed structure. This “parasitic” elastically scattered radiation contributes to the background lying under the X-ray Raman scattering data and its knowledge is necessary for the correct evaluation of the Raman spectrum.

Notes: Abstract The case of a 21/2-year-old boy with diffuse cystic angiomatosis of bone is presented. No evidence of visceral involvement was recorded. The clinical, radiographic and histologic findings during the course of the disease process are discussed. At the age of 15 years the patient died of neurologic alterations developed due to massive osteolysis and collapse of the cervical spine, and severe dyspnoea, secondary to persistent bilateral pleural effusions.

Notes: Abstract Some time after its formation an exotic atom may be considered a hydrogen-like system consisting of a nucleus and an exotic particle in a bound state. In this situation it is an ideal tool to study cascade properties, while for the innermost orbits it can be used to probe the interaction with the nucleus. From an extended series of experiments using high resolution X-ray spectroscopy for both aspects typical examples are reported and preliminary results are given: 1. To determine the complex scattering length in $${\bar p}$$ H the $${\text{3D}} \to 2{\text{P}} $$ hyperfine transitions have been measured. 2. To determine the pion mass the 5 $$\to $$ 4 transitions in $$\pi ^{14} $$ N have been studied. In all cases a major contribution to the uncertainty originates from the calibration. Therefore a new method is proposed that will establish a universal set of high precision calibration lines for pionic, muonic and electronic systems.

Notes: Abstract At the LEAR facility, CERN, antiprotonic Lα transitions in light elements have been investigated with a focussing crystal spectrometer. The high resolution of the experiment allowed for the first time to resolve in $${\bar p}$$ H the 23P0 state from the close lying states 23P2, 21P1, and 23P1. In $${\bar p}$$ D the corresponding transitions were found to be more than an order of magnitude broader. To a large extent the results for $${\bar p}$$ H support the meson exchange model.

Notes: Abstract K X-ray satellite spectra produced during the bombardment of uranium with 500 MeV neon, have been investigated with a high resolution crystal spectrometer. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions for vacancy production computed in the semiclassical separate atom perturbation theory and corrected forL subshell coupling and electron transfer from targetL shell into projectileK shell. The agreement between theory and experiment is rather good. It turns out, that the reduction ofL vacancy production due toL subshell coupling is essentially compensated by theL electron transfer from target to projectile. The present work is an extension of a previous study of theK α1 satellite spectra of tantalum bombarded with 403 MeV nitrogen.
