Notizen: Abstract Chronically sun-damaged human skin has a wrinkled, aged appearance as a result of alterations in the dermal extracellular matrix. Secondary effectors such as cytokines and integrins may mediate the effects of UV radiation on the skin by regulating the synthesis of metalloproteinases and structural proteins including collagen. The aim of this study was to semiquantify the steady-state mRNA levels of interleukin-1α, tumor necrosis factor α, transforming growth factor β, collagenase, stromelysin, collagen, and integrins (α 1 and α 2 ) in the skin of hairless mice that were either treated with UV or concurrently treated with UV and topical tretinoin for 5 weeks. Total RNA was extracted from the skin of the mice, reverse transcribed to cDNA, and amplified by the polymerase chain reaction in the presence of 32 P-dCTP using gene-specific primers. Results were normalized relative to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase levels. Steady-state mRNA levels of the cytokines and integrins were increased by UV radiation. Concurrent UV and topical tretinoin treatment superinduced the expression of interleukin-1, increased α 1 and decreased α 2 integrin expression. Immunofluorescence analysis showed increased dermal localization of β 1 integrin in UV and tretinoin treated skin. These results suggest that cytokines and integrins may be involved in the mechanism of photodamage.

Notizen: The phosphorescence from the nylon polymers 6, 66, 11, and 12 has been studied from the aspects of excitation and emission wavelength location and of emission lifetime. In contrast to the other nylons, the 66 polymer exhibits two distinct phosphorescence bands, both of which are sensitive to thermal and photochemical oxidation of the polymer. The species responsible for these emissions are concluded to be carbonyl in nature and their role in the complex reactions that occur during thermal and photochemical oxidation of the polymer is discussed.

Notizen: Fluorescence and phosphorescence are observed following the mild thermal oxidation of two model compounds for nylon 66. Both emissions are remarkably similar in structure and in wavelength location to the corresponding emissions normally observed from the commercial polymer. Although the fluorescence could not be characterized, the phosphorescence exhibits several features which are clearly consistent with that of a nπ* carbonyl emission. The role of carbonyl groups in the thermal and photochemical oxidation of nylon 66 is discussed.

Notizen: The photoactivity of titania pigments at different loadings in both polyethylene and polypropylene is examined by phosphorescence and carbonyl formation and a correlation between the two observed. A nickel (II) chelate stabilizer proved more effective than a hydroxybenzophenone stabilizer in the presence of anatase. This difference in stabilizing efficiency appears to be due to more efficient quenching of the excited state of the anatase by the nickel chelate than by the hydroxybenzophenone.
