    Notes: A diffractometer has been constructed for structural studies of high-temperature melt with synchrotron radiation. It was designed to measure diffracted intensities from the free surface of a molten sample by scanning a scintillation counter with a fixed glancing angle of the incident beam. In order to heat samples up to 1500 °C, a small electric furnace is attached to the diffractometer. It carries a hemicircular (100 mm in diameter) cover, which has a window for the passage of x rays. The window is covered with a Kapton film. The sample container made of 30 Rh-Pt is mounted at the center of the furnace. A test measurement was performed on GeO2. Monochromatic beams with λ=1.32 A and its second harmonics were taken out of synchrotron radiation by a β-alumina crystal (d002=11.3 A) and used as incident beams. To partial scattering curves obtained with λ and λ/2 were combined to a single curve after correction for absorption. The radial distribution function obtained from these data is in good agreement with that previously reported which was derived from diffraction data collected on a conventional diffractometer.

    Notes: —The two enzymes methylating myelin basic protein and histone were purified 170- and 250-fold respectively from the cell sap fraction of rat brain. These enzymes methylated only arginine residues of the two proteins. The enzyme activities were present in all organs tested. Testis has the highest, brain a moderate and liver the lowest activity. Most of the activities were present in the cell sap fraction in brain, liver and testis. Methylation of myelin basic protein and histone was examined in both the cell sap and solubilized nuclear fraction of rat brain during life span after birth. The myelin basic protein methylating activity in the cell sap fraction increased during myelination. Histone methylase from the nuclear fraction was highest at birth and dropped rapidly thereafter. The other activities remained unchanged. The natural occurrence of NG-mono- and NG,NG-dimethylarginine residues in histones prepared from rabbit liver was demonstrated.

    Notes: —Methods for the determination of methyl-lysine, methyllarginine and methylhistidine residues of tissue proteins are described. They consist of preliminary purification of basic amino acids, enzymic removal of lysine, arginine and histidine followed by amino acid analysis. Recovery rates and specificities of the method were satisfactory. The contents of methylamino acids in proteins of mammalian organs were determined.The distribution of proteins containing the methylamino acids in human brain showed that the concentrations of methyl-lysine and NG,N′G-dimethylarginine were highest in the gray matter of the cerebellar cortex and relatively high in regions rich in gray matter, while those of NG-mono- and NG,N′G-dimethylarginine were highest in the white matter. The following findings suggest that most of the NG-mono- and NG,N′G-dimethylarginine was associated with the myelin basic protein. The distribution of the methylarginine residues of acid-soluble proteins in bovine brains coincided with the cerebroside pattern. The concentrations of the amino acids in acid-soluble proteins of rat brain increased concomitantly with the increase of cerebroside. The methylamino acid content in proteins increased during the purification of the myelin basic protein from the white matter of human and bovine brains.Proteins containing NG,NG-dimethyiarginine and di- and trimethyl-lysine are concentrated in cell nuclei. The first amino acid was found mainly in nucleoplasmic proteins and the other two were found in histones. The concentration of 3-methylhistidine residue, highest in muscular proteins, is low in cerebral proteins and is probably derived from proteins of walls of blood vessels in the brain.

    Notes: Abstract— Transfer of the methyl group of S-adenosyl [Me-14C]methionine into cerebral proteins, an encephalitogenic protein and histones was studied using extracts of bovine and rat brains. The brain extract contains multiple substrate proteins and their lysine and arginine residues were methylated to form Ne-mono-, -di- and -trimethyl-lysine and NG-mono-, NG, NG- and NG,NG-dimethylarginine residues respectively, at different rates. The enzyme which catalyses the methylation of arginine residues was differentiated by ammonium sulphate fractionation from that methylating lysine residues. Methylation of arginine and lysine residues of proteins was stepwise in general, from mono- to dimethyl-arginine and from mono- to di- and trimethyl-lysines. Two different enzymes which methylate histone and the encephalitogenic basic protein respectively were obtained from the cytoplasmic fraction of rat brain and their enzymic properties were examined.

    Notes: A review is given of ceramic and single-crystal thin film ferroelectric oxides, emphasizing perovskite phases, together with some new developments on hafnia films. It is shown that single-crystal barium titanate films behave as bulk down to at least 77 nm, with no finite size effects, no phase transition temperature shifts, and no dielectric peak broadening or change from first- to second-order transitions, suggesting that the gradient defect model of Bratkovsky and Levanyuk correctly describes such effects as extrinsic in experimental studies of equally thin ceramic thin films. In ceramic barium–strontium titanate (BST) thin films, it is shown that there is also no intrinsic broadening or shifts in phase transitions, with sharp, unshifted, bulk-like transitions observed only as re-entrant upon warming from cryogenic temperatures; this shows that phase transitions in ceramic thin films are dominated by kinetics and not thermodynamics and are definitely not equilibrium measurements. At high fields (〉1 GV/m), the films exhibit space charge-limited conduction; no variable-range hopping is observed, contrary to recent studies on SrTiO3. Some novel, unconventional switching processes are discussed, comparing the “perimeter effect” (non-equilibrium, ballistic) with Molotskii's equilibrium model. Theory and experiment are described for [3D] nanotubes, nanorods, and nano-ribbons (or micro-ribbons). The layered-structure-perovskite–pyrochlore conversion in bismuth titanate is described together with the PbO+TiO2 phase separation in lead zirconate titanate during electrical breakdown, as are novel HfO2 precursors that demonstrate enhanced temperature crystallization from the amorphous state and hence commercial advantages for front-end processing.

    Notes: : Continuous method with microbubbles of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) was applied to enzyme inactivation in a buffer system, which has a buffer capacity similar to commercial liquid foods (natural juices, fruit drinks, Japanese sake). By continuous treatment with microbubbles of SC-CO2, α-amylase and acid protease were effectively inactivated rather than by heat treatments. Compared with the inactivation efficiencies of these enzymes in deionized water by continuous treatment with microbubbles of SC-CO2, that of α-amylase was slightly lower, but that of acid protease was not in the buffer system. These results suggest that this method enables the effective inactivation of enzymes, although inactivation efficiency by this method was affected by initial pH and the buffer action of samples.

    Notes: Volatiles were removed from fish sauce by continuous-flow extraction with microbubbles of supercritical carbon dioxide. The extraction was done at 35 °C and CO2/sample flow ratio of 0.14 and 0.29 under pressures of 10 to 30 MPa. After the treatment at a CO2/sample flow ratio, 0.29 at 10 MPa, remaining percentage ((the concentration in treated sample/that in untreated one) × 100) was 5.2% trimethylamine, 8.0% S-methyl ethanethioate, 30% dimethyldisulfide, 55 to 61% aliphatic aldehydes, and 25 to 42% carboxylic acids. The increase in CO2 flow rate improved the extraction efficiency significantly, but no effect of pressure was observed. The odor intensities of treated samples were between 1/4 and 1/8 of the untreated fish sauce.

    Notes: Enzyme inactivation using a new apparatus for continuous treatment with microbubbles supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) was investigated. D value of a-amylase (5.0±1.2 min) subjected to microbubbles of SC-CO2 treatment (microbubbles-SCT) at 35 °C, 30 MPa was lower than that (227 ± 15.9 min) subjected to heat treatment (HT) at 70 °C. D value of acid protease was reduced by microbubbles-SCT at 50 °C, 30 MPa (15.4 ± 4.1 min), compared to HT at 50 °C (233 ± 15.2 min). The activation energy for the inactivation of acid protease (135 ± 8.3 kJ mol-1) by microbubbles-SCT was 1 half of that (259 ± 9.0 kJ mol-1) by HT. These results indicated that continuous treatment with microbubbles of SC-CO2 was effective for enzyme inactivation.
