Conclusions Our analysis demonstrates that tcPCO2, unlike tcPO2, may still closely reflect arterial values in infants with extreme hypotension. Also in shock, electrode temperatures below 44°C appear sufficient for tcPCO2 monitoring in newborn infants. We did observe, however, a disproportionate rise in tcPCO2 in a few instances, probably associated with an almost stagnant peripheral blood flow. Further clinical studies are necessary to learn more about the behaviour of tcPCO2 under clinical conditions at the borderline between life and death.
